Is the VSCode syntax highlighting extension operational?

I tried it and it seems like it was last published 4 years ago and it didn't recognize any files

I believe it is operational. It was published 4 years ago, but syntax is stable, so there were no needs for update.
I checked and it works at github.dev.
It doesn't recognize *.l files for you?..
