From 1f8bc673987c61dce1154824d59881a263251f32 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: =?UTF-8?q?Val=20Alexander=20=F0=9F=91=91?= Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2026 07:26:02 -0600 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] LM-5: fixture-level AC1 compaction, AC3, AC4 and AC5 (#380) Wire tests on codex-cli 0.166.0 against a scripted loopback Responses server (MODEX_LM3_WIRE): - AC1: native auto-compaction goes inline to the configured server for the selected model, and nowhere else. - AC3: a turn queued behind another profile of the same server and then stopped sends that server nothing. - AC4: overflow (HTTP and stream), OOM 500, 503, dropped stream, killed child and Stop each end failed or interrupted, with no retry, no model switch and no second tool run. Repairs, each red first: - A local HTTP 500 is reported as the local server's error, not Codex's cloud "high demand" text. - Admission requires the effective stream_max_retries to be 0. - compact_prompt and the compaction threshold keys are governed. - Only this Mac's window (by: "desktop") may set, change or clear a local target; the filter was a deny-list for "paired-desktop". Also: AC3 two-profile fixture, AC5 retry and draft-settings cases, the stale LM-5 slice 1 status line, the review record and status entry. main/index.ts still constructs no LocalExecution. This delivery is built on `main` at `0a8c513baa95ef6cf7e5f833e4aae468ae62a5e1`. It closes the +fixture-level gaps left after the six earlier LM-5 deliveries (#423/#424, #447, #448, #461, #462, #465). It +doesn't admit product local execution: `main/index.ts` still constructs no `LocalExecution`, so a built app +refuses every local selection exactly as before. + +Kinds of evidence are kept apart: +- **Fixture:** a scripted `codex app-server` (fake process). +- **Wire:** the installed `codex-cli 0.166.0` against a scripted loopback Responses server in the test process, + with no model and no inference service. +- **Not run:** a real runtime, a network-denied canary, a managed Mac. + +## What changed + +- **Truthful local 500 (AC4).** On any HTTP 500, codex-cli 0.166.0 reports its cloud text "We're currently + experiencing high demand, which may cause temporary errors.", with `codexErrorInfo: "internalServerError"`. From a + loopback server, that isn't what happened. `LocalExecution` now reports "The local server returned an internal + error (HTTP 500). Check its log: it may have run out of memory or crashed while loading the model. Modex didn't + retry the turn or switch models." Codex's own text stays in the turn's detail. +- **Stream retries admitted only at 0 (AC4).** Modex already passed `stream_max_retries=0`, but admission + checked only `request_max_retries`. Admission now refuses any other effective `stream_max_retries`. With + retries on, Codex re-sends the whole request after a dropped stream, a 500 or a 503 (negative control below). +- **Compaction keys governed (AC1).** These codex-cli 0.166.0 keys weren't governed: + - `compact_prompt`, which replaces the instructions a compaction sends; + - `model_auto_compact_token_limit_scope`, `model_post_turn_compact_threshold_percent` and + `model_async_compact_threshold_percent`, which change when compaction runs. + + A managed layer could set any of them. They are now governed like `developer_instructions`: a layer other + than Modex's session flags that sets one refuses the child by name. `experimental_compact_prompt_file` was + already governed through the `experimental_` prefix. +- **Local target set only from this Mac's window (AC5).** `ThreadRunner.updateThread` used to strip + `localTarget`/`localContextTokens` only when `by === "paired-desktop"`. A caller that named no client kept + them: the dev browser transport (`commands.ts:110`), demo and any future caller. It's now an allow-list: + only `by === "desktop"` (index.ts's `answeredFrom` for a native IPC event) may select, change or clear a + local target. The pins on a local thread (model, backend, effort, Auto, Plan) still throw for every caller. +- **Stale status line.** `docs/local-models.md` no longer says LM-5 slice 1 lives on `lm5-policy`. It landed + through #423 (`c23e6be`). + +## AC1: where a local child's compaction goes (wire) + +`AC1 compaction` in `test/local-codex-native.test.ts`. Thirteen focused cases passed; removing the local approval guard made both local approval cases fail on unexpected dispatch. Build and full unit validation passed (2,251 passes, 26 skips); independent review found no actionable findings. Protected delivery landed through #447; native offline acceptance and the remaining #380 criteria stay open. [Evidence](reviews/2026-10-30-lm5-auxiliary-dispatch.md). - **LM-5 context-window evidence (#380 AC6).** A local child's context window keeps its sources apart: the person's explicit setting, the effective value Codex reports, the runtime's last advertised maximum (or "not checked") and an unknown loaded size. A window above the advertised maximum is refused before any process starts. Disabling each of the four new guards made its regression fail. Product admission, the native offline canary and real-runtime overflow handling stay open. [Evidence](reviews/2026-10-30-lm5-context-evidence.md). - **LM-5 known cloud-routed models refused by main (#380).** `LocalExecution.validate` refuses a model the connection's last listing marked cloud-routed, embedding-only or not generative. On an Ollama connection it also refuses a `…:cloud`/`…-cloud` name without any listing. Nothing is spawned. Unmarked models stay unverified rather than local. Disabling each of the four guards made its regression fail. [Evidence](reviews/2026-10-30-lm5-cloud-routed-models.md). +- **LM-5 fixture-level AC1 compaction, AC3, AC4 and AC5 (#380, in review).** On codex-cli 0.166.0 against a scripted loopback server, a local child's native compaction goes inline to the configured server for the selected model, and nowhere else. Two profiles for one service share a slot, and a stopped queued turn sends that server nothing. A context overflow, an OOM 500, a 503, a dropped stream, a killed child and Stop each end failed or interrupted, with no retry, model switch or second tool run. Four repairs: a local 500 no longer shows Codex's cloud "high demand" text; admission requires `stream_max_retries=0`; the compaction prompt and threshold keys are governed; only this Mac's window (`by: "desktop"`) may set or clear a local target. Each new regression failed before its fix or under a negative control. Product admission, AC2 offline and real-runtime AC4 stay with Val. [Evidence](reviews/2026-11-01-lm5-fixtures.md). - **Canvas Escape harness readiness.** Repeated hosted failures showed the main pane still hidden after guest Escape. A controlled delayed-IPC diagnostic proved that renderer full-view state can precede native readiness. The test-only candidate waits for the native guest to become visible at the expanded preview bounds before sending one Escape, retaining all security and lifecycle assertions. Five candidate repetitions and full local validation passed; the implementation also passed hosted macOS validation. The Windows first failure, passing retry and original CodeQL upload failure remain recorded. It landed through #446 (`2ce777c`) on 2026-10-30, after v0.4.0.
