running bits in Virtualbox

When I try to boot from the iso on virtualbox, I get the following:

Welcome to GRUB!

Starting BITS ...
[0.00] Import redirect

then the screen freezes. Any idea of how to get this working on Virtualbox?

have the same problem with the bits-2079.zip and bits-2073.zip build, running Virtualbox 5.1.12

the bits-400.zip build works as shown in the screenshots (random third choice)
