No, I haven't tried reading any ROMs.

My version also does not have recording capabilities.

Bought mine online and managed to test it without the missing audio and serial ports bracket, by using some Dupont wires, a RS-232 DE9 connector, two 100 ohm resistors and a USB to RS-232/Serial adapter. Thus, I got to see that it worked by using only the front audio connectors.
It can work with the front headphones port as wired in the attached image (brown wire jumper wire is active GND and not really needed), but it can also work with the front microphone port. The difference is that the microphone port wiring is raw signal while the headphones port wiring (as in the attached image) is filtered through the front analog volume control wheel.
