Command Line will not redirect output to a pipe or a file

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. run 'ribsu > /tmp/somefile.txt'
2. observe no output from remote control keypresses
3. ctrl+c to quit
4. cat /tmp/somefile.txt


What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There should be the remote codes in the file, but the file is zero length
