Foundry G0 security gap: upstream runtime adds HOME and /tmp convenience writes even with allowWrite=[workspace]. Introduce filesystem.includeDefaultWritePaths=false (upstream behavior unchanged when omitted) in write policy and violation monitor. Source and exact compiled git-installable dist included; seccomp helpers copied byte-for-byte from @carderne/sandbox-runtime@0.0.72 npm artifact with SHA-256s in README. Not published to npm. Verified npm build/typecheck, two policy tests, external observer against patched local runtime: 29/29 subset (including implicit HOME write/read denial). Further independent review and exact-commit install pending.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Linux-only offline networking mode that blocks network access without a host proxy. It requires an on-disk seccomp helper and a fixed deny-all policy; network settings cannot be changed per command or during a session. Offline mode is unavailable on macOS and Windows.
    • Added an option to exclude default filesystem write paths, limiting writes to locations explicitly allowed by the sandbox. Default write paths remain enabled unless opted out, and the setting cannot be changed for an individual call.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance on the Foundry fork, offline networking requirements, write-path behavior, installation, distribution, and artifact provenance.

Walkthrough

Adds an option to exclude default write paths and a fixed deny-all offline network mode for Linux sandboxes. The manager applies these settings and rejects unsupported configurations and updates. Tests cover both features. The README and package metadata describe fork settings and packaging.

Changes

Sandbox configuration and fork updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and apply default write paths
src/sandbox/sandbox-config.ts, src/sandbox/sandbox-manager.ts, test/default-write-paths-helper.mjs, test/no-default-write-paths.test.mjs
Adds the optional includeDefaultWritePaths setting. The manager uses it for write allowlists and Linux violation monitoring. Tests cover both settings, writes to npm’s log directory, and rejection of per-call and live changes.
Validate and apply offline networking
src/sandbox/sandbox-config.ts, src/sandbox/linux-sandbox-utils.ts, src/sandbox/sandbox-manager.ts, test/offline-network.test.mjs
Adds Linux-only offline mode with a fixed deny-all policy and no proxy or bridge. The manager rejects unsupported configurations, per-command network overrides, and configuration updates. Dependency checks require an on-disk seccomp helper. Tests cover offline behavior and invalid configurations.
Document and identify the fork
README.md, package.json
Documents fork settings, artifacts, installation, and platform limitations. Clarifies that the npm installation example installs upstream. Changes the package version and removes the prepare script that ran husky.
Configure fork-specific workflows
.github/workflows/integration-tests.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml
Skips selected integration, Docker, and release jobs in the fork. Adds fork-specific Linux checks and a build status job that fails when a prerequisite job does not succeed.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 096a6

Inherited workflow runs can fail despite passing their tests, and changing a retained configuration object can make write-violation reports inaccurate. Fix those issues and clarify the fork’s write-path and offline dependency instructions before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 096a6

The new controls are designed to narrow sandbox access, and no introduced security failure was established. They govern whether commands can write outside an approved workspace or reach the host network, so their effective behavior and deployment warrant design review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is a sandboxed command's access to host-writable paths and host networking. The new settings narrow those capabilities when the owning caller selects them; they do not change the omitted write-path setting's behavior.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Offline initialization rejects non-Linux or permissive network settings, including socket and proxy allowances. Wrapping rejects per-command network overrides and checks the required isolation dependencies.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The seccomp path resolver caches its result. On the inspected path, removal of a previously resolved helper would retain its command prefix rather than select the wrapper's no-seccomp branch; successful execution under that removal scenario was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — At the final Linux command-construction boundary, explicitly require a seccomp prefix for offline invocations. This would make the deny-all guarantee local to enforcement rather than dependent on the earlier manager check.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🛡️ Detected with Advanced Tier | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh or reject Linux monitor policy changes.

updateConfig() replaces config but does not restart or reconfigure linuxMonitor. The monitor captures allowWritePaths at startup. A change from true to false therefore makes new commands deny writes to default paths while the monitor still classifies those paths as allowed and omits their violation events. This affects diagnostic reporting only; bwrap still enforces the write policy. Refresh the monitor when the configuration changes, or reject includeDefaultWritePaths in updateConfig().

  • The consumer remains pinned to @carderne/sandbox-runtime: ^0.0.72 and lockfile version 0.0.72 (package.json:42, pnpm-lock.yaml:15-17). The fork version 0.0.72-foundry.1 requires an explicit dependency/lockfile update. [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]
  • SandboxConfig inherits the upstream network/filesystem types, and config-layer merging spreads nested overrides, so the new fields can be represented and preserved in configuration (src/config.ts:7-22, 50-57). [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]
  • buildRuntimeConfig spreads config.network, preserving offline, but reconstructs filesystem explicitly and does not pass through filesystem.includeDefaultWritePaths (src/sandbox-runtime.ts:70-88). Consequently, configuring includeDefaultWritePaths: false in pi-sandbox will not reach the forked runtime. [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]
  • Existing sandbox updates call manager.updateConfig(...) (src/sandbox-runtime.ts:105-113), while the fork rejects offline policy updates. Offline configuration therefore needs integration handling if pi-sandbox’s permission/config update paths can be invoked during an offline session. [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]

@coderabbitai review Current head fixes the offline AF_UNIX/mandatory seccomp issue, skips socat only for offline sessions, and has a passing required CI build. Please re-review current bytes and update the requested-changes decision if no actionable findings remain.

Linked repositories findings

10krco/pi-sandbox

  • Dependency remains @carderne/sandbox-runtime: ^0.0.72, locked to 0.0.72; it will not select the fork’s 0.0.72-foundry.1 without explicit dependency and lockfile changes (package.json:42, pnpm-lock.yaml:15-17,153). [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]
  • buildRuntimeConfig explicitly reconstructs filesystem but omits includeDefaultWritePaths (src/sandbox-runtime.ts:63-85). Thus configuring the new option in pi-sandbox will not reach the forked runtime. [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]
  • updateSandboxConfig unconditionally calls manager.updateConfig(...) (src/sandbox-runtime.ts:105-112). Since the fork rejects offline-policy updates, this integration path must avoid updates for offline sessions. [::10krco/pi-sandbox::]

@coderabbitai review All four actionable findings from the previous review are fixed in 0a09b41 with live wrapped-write and policy-mutation tests. The required fork Linux build passes, no approval bypass was made. Please review and approve current bytes if clean, or report any remaining concrete blocker.

@coderabbitai review All review threads are resolved on current head 0a09b41; its fork Linux CI and required build pass. The four last actionable findings were fixed, with a regression for the mutable session policy. Please issue an independent current-head approval if no blocker remains, or identify the specific remaining actionable finding. No bypass or premature merge requested.

@jwilger, I reviewed head 0a09b41. Offline commands use --unshare-net without proxy sockets and invoke the on-disk seccomp helper. The write-policy guards and regression tests cover the reported policy-mutation issue. The Fork Linux offline boundary and required build checks pass. I found no remaining actionable blocker in this PR, so I approve it.

The linked pi-sandbox repository still uses upstream 0.0.72 and does not forward includeDefaultWritePaths. That integration needs a separate change before callers can use this option through pi-sandbox.

Additional local regression comparison on the same NixOS host/Bun command: unmodified upstream v0.0.72 (dea3f1a) full suite: 732 pass, 158 skip, 14 FAIL; current fork head 0a09b41 full suite: 783 pass, 151 skip, 10 FAIL. Both fail the three root-level allowRead carve-out tests, several control-fd cases, Git-over-SSH proxy and some integration/BPF environment cases. The failure sets are not identical; this is not a claim that the fork full suite passes or that every remaining failure is proven unrelated. G0-specific targeted Node/Bun tests (4/4), typecheck/lint and required current Fork Linux offline boundary/build CI do pass. Full logs remain local at /tmp/foundry-g0/{upstream-bun-full,fork-bun-current}.log. Review on exact head 0a09b41 is still required before merge.
