Summary

  • Prefer the current ESPHome unique_id format when resolving SAT gateway entities
  • Parse migrated ESPHome unique IDs as {mac}/{sub_device_id}/{platform}/{object_id} to avoid accidental suffix matches
  • Fall back to the legacy ESPHome unique_id format for older or unmigrated registries
  • Add focused tests for current, legacy, preference, domain mismatch, and malformed unique_id lookup behavior

Fixes #175

Testing

  • .venv/bin/python -m pytest tests/test_esphome.py
  • Deployed the patched ESPHome SAT module to a Home Assistant 2026.8.3 instance and restarted Home Assistant Core
  • Confirmed the affected ESPHome OpenTherm entities use the migrated unique_id format, including number.t_set, number.max_t_set, sensor.t_boiler, and binary_sensor.flame_on

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved ESPHome entity matching across legacy and current unique ID formats.
    • Prevented entities from unrelated domains or malformed identifiers from being matched.
    • Ensured current-format entity IDs take precedence when both formats are available.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for legacy IDs, current IDs, domain filtering, precedence, and malformed identifiers.

Walkthrough

The ESPHome coordinator now resolves entities with current four-part and legacy Home Assistant unique_id formats. Tests cover lookup precedence, domain filtering, and malformed current IDs.

ESPHome entity resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Entity lookup logic
custom_components/sat/esphome/__init__.py
_get_entity_id validates current IDs with four path parts and matches the MAC address, domain, and key. It retains the legacy registry lookup fallback.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f8ec7

The change supports both current and legacy ESPHome entity IDs, preserving boiler reads and setpoint control after migration. Compatibility edge cases remain insufficiently protected by tests, creating a bounded regression risk for legacy or malformed registry entries.

Test malformed current IDs with legacy fallback.

The fixture has no legacy entity ID. The test passes even if the implementation stops after rejecting the malformed current ID. Configure a legacy registry result and assert that it is returned while the malformed current entry is ignored.

Prefer the current ESPHome unique ID format when resolving gateway entities, parsing the migrated {mac}/{sub_device_id}/{platform}/{object_id} shape before falling back to the legacy {MAC}-{domain}-{key} lookup.

Add focused tests for current lookup, legacy fallback, precedence, platform/domain filtering, and malformed migrated IDs.

This PR fixed my issues with unique ID format changing when I upgraded HASS too.

ESPhome opentherm device, Home assistant with SAT 4.2.1 via HACS

I only just noticed as I haven't needed the heating until recently 😆

Here's my ch_enable entity

I too was getting "PWM turned off due to missing values" and SAT boiler having the status "INSUFFICIENT_DATA" and found this when enabling debug and seeing attempts to set values for entity_id None

This patch solved it for me, thank you @cnrd

Home Assistant 2026.8.3 moved ESPHome unique_ids from {MAC}-{domain}-{key} to
{mac}/{sub_device_id}/{domain}/{key}, so the 4.2.x lookup finds no entities and
SAT's commands to the boiler go nowhere (Alexwijn#175). Merged from the
still-open upstream PR.
