Rewrites development/application.mdx (same slug) around the dev environment switch:

  • ARETE_ENVIRONMENT, a4 dev run, framework public copies and [dev] public-env-prefixes, <AreteProvider environment>
  • edge vs direct mode (ARETE_DEV_URL / ARETE_DEV_ENV), client.environment
  • what changes in dev mode and what doesn't, sign-only wallets
  • environment stacks start empty from their load slot
  • the refusal codes with fixes, never a fallback to production
  • gating dev-only features on client.environment === 'dev'
  • one project per environment (lease, --take-over, a4 dev branch) and the dev-tier stack quota
  • shipping: a4 dev promote --check, a4 install --locked, deploy with the switch unset

Merge last: it documents behaviour from #475 (edge, a4 dev run), #483 / #482 / #484 (SDKs), #486 (automations and protocol client), #480 (leases), #479 (quota preflight), #478 (load slot), #481 and #485 (promote, local extensions). It goes with the release that ships them.

Prettier-checked.

The app page now covers ARETE_ENVIRONMENT and a4 dev run, the edge for
browsers, direct mode for CI, what changes in dev mode, the refusal codes,
gating dev-only features on client.environment, stacks that start empty,
the one-project lease and dev quotas, and the promote check before
shipping.

[Low impact] The PR appears safe to merge with the coordinated release described by the author.

Summary

Rewrites the application development guide around the dev environment switch.

  • Apps switch between production and dev without changing installed SDK files.
  • Dev clients use fork data and explain when the environment cannot serve a request.
  • Apps check environment-only dependencies before shipping production builds.
