Add Chart.add_line for single highlighted lines (closes #32) - #41
Chart.add_line and Chart.remove_line draw single lines of constant value on top of the line families. Each line has its own name, legend entry, label and style.
diagram=PropertyDiagram("CO2", "ph", units="engineering")
diagram.set_default_lines(labels=True, rounding=True)
diagram.add_line("T", 22) # one isotherm highlighted among the defaultsdiagram.add_line("p", 130, name="Burst disk",
line_style=LineStyle(color="red", width_pt=2.0, dash="dashed"))
Any quantity set_lines accepts works, and so do the two axis quantities (p and h on a p-h chart). A line of an axis quantity is straight across the plot, and the axes widen to show it.
Without line_style, a line takes its family's style at twice the width. An axis line takes the colour of the saturation curve, including any set_line_style("saturation", ...) change.
label is True (the value), False (no label) or a text of its own. The default name is the label text, for example "T=22 deg C"; when a line of another value already has that name, the new one is numbered ("p=30 bar (2)").
set_lines and set_default_lines leave these lines alone. A line with the same value as one of its family's lines reuses that line's curve from the cache.
How
Spec:coolplot.LineSpec and DiagramSpec.lines. The spec record gets a "lines" entry only when there are lines, so records of 1.5 read and write as before. Names must be unique and may not end in /label.
Engine:plan() requests the curves of non-axis lines after the families, with item id line/<name>. Families and lines go through one plan, so the background engine treats them as one batch.
Compose: new scene roles line and line_label, drawn between the saturation curve and the labels (z order 3). line_look and line_items follow isoline_look and isoline_items. The new helpers label_spot and label_style are shared with the family labels, and DiagramType.is_axis replaces the repeated axis checks. The legend and badge corners count the single lines.
coolplot-core 1.6: the same composer in C++, with five new golden cases. An older core refuses specs with lines, and the Python composer draws them, as for earlier features.
Docs: a "Single lines" section in the isolines how-to, contracts reference, CHANGELOG (Unreleased), and the CO2 example now shows the gas cooler outlet isotherm and a burst disk line.
Notes for review
master released 1.5.0 (with coolplot-core 1.5 and the badge port) while this PR was open; it is merged in, and the single lines now need coolplot-core 1.6.
Only the golden files of the single lines were written again (with the 1.5.0 themes and badge); the other golden files are master's.
The package version stays at 1.5.0 for the release to decide.
Testing (after merging master)
Python suite: 578 passed, 89 skipped (including mypy, API vocabulary, architecture and examples).
Through coolplot-core 1.6 with COOLPLOT_NATIVE=1 -W error::coolplot.corelib.CoreFallbackWarning: 626 passed, 41 skipped.
coolplot_core_tests: all passed (657 assertions). tests/js/check_scene_svg.js: all files identical. Sphinx with -W: build succeeded.
Single lines of constant value are drawn on top of the families, each with
its own name, legend entry, label and style (issue #32). A highlighted
isotherm among the default ones takes its family's style at twice the
width; a line of an axis quantity, such as the burst disk pressure in a
log(p)-h chart, runs straight across the plot and widens the axes.
- spec: LineSpec and DiagramSpec.lines, written to the spec record as
"lines" only when there are any
- engine: plan() requests the curves of non-axis lines after the families,
under the id "line/<name>", so they share the cache with family lines
- compose: scene roles "line" and "line_label", z order 3
- coolplot-core 1.5: the same composer in C++, with golden cases; an older
core leaves charts with single lines to the Python composer
- docs, changelog and the CO2 example show the burst disk line
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- DiagramType.is_axis replaces the repeated "key in (x, y)" checks in the
spec, planner, composer and chart (Python and C++)
- line_look and line_items follow isoline_look and isoline_items; line_look
returns (style, role, legend, z order) like isoline_look
- axes_spec widens the axes for lines of an axis quantity itself, so
compose needs no extra glue
- label_spot (out of inline_labels) and label_style (out of label_requests)
are shared by the families and the single lines; axis_line returns the
straight line and its label spot
- C++: label_item builds every label, a map finds the curve of a line
- add_line snaps the default name's value directly, LineSpec is built with
keywords
The scenes are unchanged: the golden files and the comparisons with
coolplot-core pass as before.

Walkthrough
The change adds named constant-value lines for family and axis quantities. Chart APIs, specification records, curve planning, and Python and native composition support line values, labels, and styles.
Changes: Named Single Lines
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Line specification and chart API src/coolplot/spec/diagram.py, src/coolplot/chart.py, src/coolplot/core/diagram_type.py, src/coolplot/__init__.py, src/coolplot/spec/__init__.py, cpp/include/coolplot/spec.h, cpp/include/coolplot/core.h, cpp/src/spec.cpp
Specifications represent named lines with values, labels, styles, and point counts. Chart.add_line adds or replaces a line, and Chart.remove_line removes one by name. The API validates inputs and serializes non-empty line data.
Python planning and composition src/coolplot/engine/planning.py, src/coolplot/compose/builder.py, src/coolplot/scene.py
Planning requests curves for non-axis lines. Composition draws axis lines across the plot and other lines from computed curves. It places labels and includes lines in axis limits, corner placement, and scene ordering.
Native specification and composition cpp/src/spec.cpp, cpp/src/compose.cpp, cpp/include/coolplot/compose.h, cpp/CMakeLists.txt, src/coolplot/corelib.py
CoolPlot Core 1.5 parses and composes single-line specifications. It draws line and label items, includes lines in axis limits and legend placement, and uses z-order 3. The Python compatibility check avoids sending line specifications to older cores.
Tests cover line APIs, validation, serialization, rendering, and native-core parity and fallback. Documentation and the example describe line configuration, labels, styles, and scene roles.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 4bf6d
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: some zoomed lines lack labels, progress can be inaccurate, and duplicate names in native input can produce invalid scenes.

Explanation
Issue #32 requires highlighted individual isolines without replacing default families, independent wider styling, and lines for axis quantities. Chart.add_line and remove_line implement named lines. set_lines and set_default_lines preserve them. The composer draws family and axis lines, expands axis limits, and supports labels and styles. Tests cover family preservation, axis lines, styling, validation, serialization, SVG output, and native-core behavior.

- A line name may not end in "/label" (its label id would be another
line's label id); refused by the Python spec and the C++ reader
- Default names of different values that read the same ("p=30 bar") are
numbered instead of replacing each other
- Lines of an axis quantity take the saturation colour with the changes of
set_line_style("saturation"), in both composers
- Single lines are labelled from 2 visible points on, the families still
from 3, so their labels and the golden files stay as they are
- Docs: the how-to example imports PropertyDiagram, the contracts name the
label group line/<name>/label

Reject duplicate line names in native specifications.
178-178: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject duplicate line names in native specifications.
If a direct compose_json record contains two axis lines named A, the parser appends both. Composition then emits two items with ID line/A and two labels with ID line/A/label. The native scene writer serializes those duplicate IDs, but scene readers reject them. Reject a repeated name before spec.lines.push_back(line), as the Python specification does. Review comment at @cpp/src/spec.cpp at line 178:
In the native specification parser, check whether a line with the same name
already exists in spec.lines before appending with spec.lines.push_back(line),
and reject the repeated name to match the Python specification behavior.

Count single-line requests in synchronous progress.
If a chart has only add_line("T", ...), Chart.progress returns (0, 0) even though planning requests a curve for that line. Include non-axis single lines in the completed and needed counts. Axis lines need no curve request. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/coolplot/chart.py at line 328:
Update Chart.progress so its completed and needed counts include non-axis
single-line requests as well as isolines, matching the planning behavior;
exclude axis lines because they do not request curves. Preserve the existing
isoline counting behavior.
The two outside-diff findings of the second review are fixed in cb42a82:
cpp/src/spec.cpp: the C++ reader refuses a repeated line name, as the Python spec does (test in test_compose.cpp).
Chart.progress without a background engine counts the single lines that need a curve; lines of an axis quantity need none (test_progress_counts_the_lines_that_need_a_curve).
master released 1.5.0 with coolplot-core 1.5 (the badge port), so the
single lines are composed by coolplot-core 1.6: the core version, the
bridge's refusal for an older core, the tests and the docs say 1.6. The
legend and the badge corners count the single lines. The golden files of
the single lines are written again with the 1.5.0 themes and badge.

Closes #32.
What
Chart.add_lineandChart.remove_linedraw single lines of constant value on top of the line families. Each line has its own name, legend entry, label and style.set_linesaccepts works, and so do the two axis quantities (p and h on a p-h chart). A line of an axis quantity is straight across the plot, and the axes widen to show it.line_style, a line takes its family's style at twice the width. An axis line takes the colour of the saturation curve, including anyset_line_style("saturation", ...)change.labelisTrue(the value),False(no label) or a text of its own. The default name is the label text, for example "T=22 deg C"; when a line of another value already has that name, the new one is numbered ("p=30 bar (2)").set_linesandset_default_linesleave these lines alone. A line with the same value as one of its family's lines reuses that line's curve from the cache. How
coolplot.LineSpecandDiagramSpec.lines. The spec record gets a"lines"entry only when there are lines, so records of 1.5 read and write as before. Names must be unique and may not end in/label.plan()requests the curves of non-axis lines after the families, with item idline/<name>. Families and lines go through one plan, so the background engine treats them as one batch.lineandline_label, drawn between the saturation curve and the labels (z order 3).line_lookandline_itemsfollowisoline_lookandisoline_items. The new helperslabel_spotandlabel_styleare shared with the family labels, andDiagramType.is_axisreplaces the repeated axis checks. The legend and badge corners count the single lines.Notes for review
