Release 1.5.0 with everything on master, coolplot-core back to 1.5 - #45
1.5.0 was never tagged or published (PyPI still has 1.4.0 as the newest version). The merge of master into the single lines branch (000a2eb) still assumed 1.5.0 was out and moved the new features to 1.6. As a result, master had Python at 1.5.0 and coolplot-core at 1.6.0. This PR puts both on 1.5.0 and makes the following 1.5 features: single lines (add_line, #32), marked critical and triple points, the saturation scale, labels inside the dome (#39), and the versions line of the badge.
What
coolplot-core 1.5.0: cpp/CMakeLists.txt, the version check in cpp/tests/test_svg.cpp, comments in compose.h.
Bridge: corelib.py accepts a 1.5 core for the four features above. The tests of the refusal now fake a core of 1.4 instead of 1.5, so they still test a refusal.
Docs: docstrings, the how-tos (isolines, labels, branding) and docs/reference/contracts.md say "since 1.5". The upgrade guide folds "From 1.5 to 1.6" into "From 1.4 to 1.5", with the versions line in the badge paragraph.
CHANGELOG: everything under Unreleased moves into 1.5.0, now dated 2026-11-03.
No golden files change; none of them contain the core version.
Checks
C++: coolplot_core_tests 52 passed, 1 skipped.
Python: pytest 614 passed, 106 skipped.
Python through coolplot-core (COOLPLOT_NATIVE=1, -W error::coolplot.corelib.CoreFallbackWarning, as the CI "core" job runs it): 676 passed, 44 skipped.
After merging
Tag the merge commit of this PR as v1.5.0. That starts release.yml: the tests, PyPI, and the GitHub release.
1.5.0 was never tagged or published, but the merge of master into the
single lines (000a2eb) took it as released and moved the new features
to 1.6. Python stayed at 1.5.0 while coolplot-core went to 1.6.0. Now
both are 1.5.0 and the single lines, marked points, saturation scale,
labels inside the dome and the versions line of the badge are 1.5
features:
- coolplot-core 1.5.0 (CMakeLists, its version test, compose.h);
- the bridge asks for a core of 1.5 for those features, and the tests
of the refusal fake a core of 1.4;
- docstrings, how-tos and contracts say "since 1.5";
- the upgrade guide folds "From 1.5 to 1.6" into "From 1.4 to 1.5";
- the changelog moves Unreleased into 1.5.0, dated 2026-11-03.

Walkthrough
This change aligns the CoolPlot release version with 1.5. It updates core-version checks and tests for four features, adjusts release notes, and revises documentation and compatibility references.
Core checks and tests use version 1.5 as the minimum for single lines, marked points, saturation scales, and dome labels. Fallback tests simulate core version 1.4.
Release version and notes cpp/CMakeLists.txt, cpp/include/coolplot/compose.h, cpp/tests/test_svg.cpp, CHANGELOG.md
The CMake version and C ABI version assertion change to 1.5.0. Compose documentation and changelog entries update their release references and notes.
Feature and record compatibility references docs/how_to/branding.md, docs/how_to/isolines.md, docs/how_to/labels.md, docs/reference/contracts.md, docs/upgrade.md, src/coolplot/spec/diagram.py, src/coolplot/spec/settings.py
Guides, reference documentation, and source comments update feature introduction versions and compatibility notes. The upgrade guide describes badge settings and behavior for saved specs.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review aec5c
The release alignment is mergeable with bounded follow-up: users retaining an unpublished older 1.5.0 core can silently lose requested features. Isolate the feature refusal tests and correct the remaining documentation version reference.

A rabbit checks the version row, Then watches core thresholds flow. Four features find their 1.5 date, The tests confirm the matching gate. Release notes hop into the spring, And badges show their versioning.

Turn off the badge in the older-core refusal tests.
With the default branding, has_badge is true. The badge gate at 1.5 therefore refuses the chart before any feature gate runs. The four refusal tests can pass even when their feature-specific gate is removed. The badge refusal still emits the older than 1.5 warning, and the Python composer still draws the feature.
Set branding to no badge in each of these tests. Only the feature gate can then refuse the chart.
Apply the same line after the PropertyDiagram(...) call in the marked-points, saturation-scale, and dome-label refusal tests. Without this line, these tests do not detect removal of the single-line, marked-point, saturation-scale, or dome-label gates.

Review comment at @tests/test_native_core.py around lines 522 - 524:
Update the four older-core refusal tests for single lines, marked points,
saturation scale, and dome labels to disable badge branding on each chart before
exercising the feature. This ensures the badge gate does not refuse the chart
first, so each test verifies its corresponding feature-specific gate.
