JSON files open as plain text, so they were drawn unstyled. This colours them with the highlighter Markdown code fences already use.

What changes

  • Scope (owner decision on Syntax coloring for JSON files (discussion) #113): the JSON family only, and only up to 5 MiB (COLOUR_LIMIT). Above that, and for every other plain-text file, drawing is unchanged.
  • How: in render_raw_segment, when a plain document's file extension is json/jsonc/json5, the visible chunk (at most 16 KiB, bounded by the existing plain chunking) is lexed at paint time by tachyon_md::highlight_code and overlaid like the bare-URL scan. The file stays DocMode::Plain: no IR, no parse job, no per-byte storage.
  • highlight is now public (as highlight_code); JSON gains /* */ for JSONC and JSON5.
  • A JSON string ends at its line, and chunks are cut at line ends, so a chunk lexes alone. The one imperfection: a /* */ comment that spans a chunk boundary is coloured wrongly past the cut (JSONC only).
  • Colours are the existing theme syntax tokens; no new colours.

Measured

Same machine, release builds without LTO (identical flags for both), 251 frames per run of PageDown x80, PageUp x40, Ctrl+End, Ctrl+Home, then 10 typed keys, TACHYON_FRAME_LOG render_ms:

file main p50 / p95 / p99 this branch p50 / p95 / p99
4.7 MB JSON (coloured) 0.49 / 1.52 / 2.32 ms (second main run 0.51 / 1.51 / 2.07) 1.05 / 2.72 / 4.00 ms (4 more runs: p50 1.02-1.06, p99 3.27-3.94)
5.5 MB JSON (over the limit) 0.50 / 1.50 / 2.53 ms 0.49 / 1.58 / 2.37 ms

So colouring roughly doubles the median frame cost on a large file (about +0.5 ms) and stays under 6 ms at worst; the over-limit file is unchanged. One 32.5 ms frame appeared in the first coloured run and did not recur in four repeats (max 5.3 ms), so I am treating it as noise, not proving it away. The 200 MB log path is untouched (no JSON extension, over the limit). Nothing is on the startup path.

Verified

  • cargo xtask ci (274 tests) and Windows clippy pass.
  • Tests: the highlighter on JSON (strings with escapes, numbers, keywords, both comment forms, unterminated strings, aliases), extension and size gating (json, JSON, jsonc, json5 coloured; txt, log, toml, no extension, and a file over the limit not), and that a coloured file still edits as plain text.
  • Real app (Linux): a sample JSON file renders with strings, numbers, true/false/null and both comment styles in distinct theme colours.
  • Not verified: a 200 MB file with this branch (it cannot reach the new code, but I did not run it), and anything on Windows.

Devin Review

A plain-text document whose file is .json/.jsonc/.json5 and at most 5 MiB colours each visible chunk at paint time with the existing tachyon_md highlighter (one lexing pass over a few KiB, the same place and cost class as the bare-URL scan). The file still opens in DocMode::Plain, so nothing is parsed or stored per byte; larger files and every other plain file are drawn exactly as before. JSON gains /* */ comments for JSONC/JSON5.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added syntax coloring for .json, .jsonc, and .json5 files, including strings, numbers, booleans, null, and line or block comments. File extensions are recognized regardless of capitalization, and JSON5 coloring includes single-quoted strings.
    • JSON-family files remain plain text, so you can open and edit them as before. Coloring applies only to visible content and is limited to files up to 5 MB; larger files and other plain-text formats remain uncolored.

Walkthrough

Plain-text rendering now applies JSON-family syntax colors to eligible .json, .jsonc, and .json5 files. The highlighter recognizes block comments and JSON5 single-quoted strings. These files remain plain text and editable.

Changes

JSON-family syntax coloring

Layer / File(s) Summary
JSON-family highlighting support
crates/tachyon-md/src/highlight.rs, crates/tachyon-md/src/lib.rs
The highlighter recognizes block comments and uses a separate JSON5 configuration for single-quoted strings. The highlighting function is publicly re-exported as highlight_code. Tests cover token styles, strings, and language aliases.
Plain-text rendering integration
crates/tachyon-editor/src/render.rs, crates/tachyon-editor/src/tests.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The editor selects a JSON-family language by extension and size, then applies styles to eligible visible chunks. Tests cover extension matching, size limits, chunk boundaries, and plain-text editing. The changelog records the behavior.

JSON5 files can still show incorrect colours after an escaped CRLF within a string. This is a bounded display issue; the change is mergeable with a follow-up fix.

Review findings on #142: JSON5 got the double-quote-only profile, so a single-quoted string ("{k: 'https://x'}") was lexed as code and its // as a comment (now a JSON5 profile with both quotes; JSON and JSONC unchanged); a line over the forced-cut size is split inside itself and a chunk beginning mid-line cannot know it is inside a string (now only a chunk starting at a line start is coloured, so a continuation stays plain instead of being coloured wrongly).

@coderabbitai all three findings are fixed in 3619aa8 (JSON5 profile, line-start-only chunk colouring); threads replied to and resolved. Please re-review the current head and approve if it is clean.

@DailenG I re-reviewed 3619aa8. The separate JSON5 profile and mid-line chunk guard address the three reported findings. One related case remains, so I cannot approve this head as clean.

Remaining finding: JSON5 line continuations cross line-start chunks

In crates/tachyon-editor/src/render.rs, Line 1131 accepts every chunk that starts a line. However, JSON5 permits strings to continue across lines when a backslash precedes the line ending.

If a chunk ends at that escaped newline, the next chunk starts a line inside the string. The guard accepts that chunk. The lexer then colours string contents such as true or // as a keyword or comment.

A regression fixture can place the continuation at the 256-line chunk boundary:

let text = format!(
    "{}{{k: 'prefix\\\ntrue // still inside the string'}}\n",
    "\n".repeat(255)
);

The second chunk begins with true // still inside the string'}. It must not be lexed as fresh JSON5 source.

Please extend the safe-boundary check to cover JSON5 string continuations, or leave affected chunks uncoloured through a conservative fallback. Add a regression test for this boundary.

This was a static review; I did not run repository code. Format and macOS checks passed. Windows, Linux, dependency checks, and Devin Review were still pending when inspected.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep JSON5 strings open across escaped CRLF.

For a JSON5 string containing \\\r\n, string_end skips the backslash and CR, then treats the LF as the end of the string. The remaining string content can receive keyword or comment colours, even when the entire string fits in one chunk. Skip the complete CRLF sequence after an escaped CR. JSON5 permits this line continuation. (spec.json5.org)

Bumps `version` to 1.5.0 (`Cargo.toml`, `Cargo.lock`) and moves
Unreleased under `## [1.5.0] - 2026-10-12`. A minor bump, as
CONTRIBUTING.md asks for user-visible features.

Included since 1.4.2:
- The What's new window shows every release since the version you
updated from (#141).
- Syntax colour for `.json`, `.jsonc` and `.json5` files, up to 5 MB
(#113, #142).

Not included, by decision: the Explorer "Open in Tachyon" command
(#123), closed as not planned.

The `v1.5.0` tag is **not** pushed; it waits for owner approval and the
release.yml dry run (run 38321579285).
