Full rewrite of the paper under the agreed optimistic-zkVM framing, with every number measured on the referenced hardware and mapped to a named CI test or logged run (Appendix B: claims → evidence).

Narrative structure

  1. The problem: zkVM trust vs cost (1–3 orders of magnitude).
  2. The architecture: three tiers over one journal contract — quorum (~N× execution, no proving), optimistic + dispute, receipts on demand.
  3. The meta-emulation tax, measured: 322–362× cycle explosion for the emulator-in-guest bootstrap, with the memory-capacity consequence (~28–31K legacy instructions provable on a 32 GB host).
  4. The V2 native ABI: 94× fewer cycles, 80.5 s / 15.7 GB for a job that OOMed before, byte-identical output — and the honest scoping that the trampoline is source-level because binary-level trap-and-emulate reintroduces the interpreter.
  5. The GPU gate: 24 GB VRAM floor, measured.
  6. Limitations stated as carefully as the results: coordinator trust, pilot scale, deterministic integer-only workloads, toolchain-pinned receipts, placeholder economics.

Corrections folded in from review: the 16 GB laptop claim is replaced with measured envelopes per hardware class (32 GB CPU host: ≈28–31K legacy / ≈1.4M V2 job instructions — cycle-bound vs memory-bound respectively); the V2 digest description is precise (output-only; input_id lives in the receipt binding, not the digest); the multiplier is reported as a range with per-job numbers, never a single best figure.

The superseded skeleton is absorbed into docs/PREPRINT.md.

Full reframe of the paper from the hash-chain substrate story to the
optimistic-zkVM architecture, with every claim mapped to a named test
or a measured table (Appendix B: claims -> evidence).

Structure: model + threat model; the three tiers over one journal
contract; the emulator-in-a-zkVM bootstrap (zero-migration
compatibility); the measured meta-emulation tax (322-362x; the
memory-capacity consequence: ~28-31K legacy instructions on a 32 GB
host); the V2 native ABI (94x fewer cycles, 80.5 s / 15.7 GB,
byte-identical output, memory-bound envelope ~1.4M job instructions
on 32 GB); the GPU 24 GB VRAM gate; network validation; limitations
stated as carefully as the results.

The superseded skeleton is absorbed; derived envelope figures are
labeled cycle-bound vs memory-bound.
