Summary

  • Move configuration, observability, and infrastructure setup out of platform, preserving inward core dependencies.
  • Enforce account/email/token rate limits in auth services while keeping IP checks and HTTP responses in the HTTP adapter.
  • Clarify DTO and adapter boundaries, normalize Go filenames, add an architecture-boundary test, and document the flows.

Scope and risks

  • Preserve routes, response shapes, cookies, database schema, and environment-variable names. No new migrations; the PostgreSQL rate-limit backend requires existing migration 000003.
  • Review proxy-derived IP handling, once-per-policy counting, 429/503 responses, auth DTO mapping, and bootstrap resource cleanup.
  • Queue/outbox implementation and Redis data caching are out of scope.

Verification

  • go test ./... and go test -race ./...
  • go vet ./..., golangci-lint run (0 issues)
  • Integration suite against dedicated auth_go_test PostgreSQL database and temporary Redis: go test -tags=integration -count=1 ./...
  • make sqlc (no generated SQL changes), make swagger-validate (two existing warnings), git diff --check
  • All three Mermaid diagrams rendered with mmdc
  • Reviewer confirms API and security compatibility

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added rate limiting for authentication and account-recovery requests. Rate-limited requests receive a 429 response with retry guidance; if the selected rate-limit service is unavailable, affected requests receive a 503 response.
    • Added architecture, setup, authentication, rate-limiting, and storage guidance, plus a shorter project overview with quick-start requirements.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Health checks now return clear readiness statuses and an HTTP 503 response when the database is unavailable.
    • User responses are verified not to expose password data.
  • Documentation
    • Updated API documentation schema references without changing endpoint behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds service-level authentication rate limits and updates HTTP rate-limit responses. It separates configuration, observability, and adapter packages, uses DTO response types in handlers and API specifications, and adds setup and architecture documentation.

Changes

Authentication and HTTP architecture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Core authentication contracts and limits
internal/core/domain/user.go, internal/core/port/service.go, internal/core/service/*, internal/core/ratelimit/*
Authentication services now accept command objects and check limits for registration, login, verification, and recovery. Rate-limit errors distinguish denied requests from unavailable backends. Tests cover policy checks, denials, backend errors, and successful-login counter resets.
HTTP rate limits and response types
internal/adapter/inbound/http/*, internal/adapter/inbound/http/dto/*
Handlers pass commands to authentication services and use typed response DTOs. IP limits remain at the HTTP adapter; middleware maps rate-limit errors to 429 or 503 and sets retry and no-store headers. Request-context helpers validate user claims.
Application wiring and package boundaries
cmd/auth-go/main.go, internal/bootstrap/*, internal/config/*, internal/observability/*, internal/adapter/outbound/*, internal/architecture/*
Bootstrap loads configuration and constructs the rate limiter before the service. Package responsibilities move from platform to configuration, observability, rate-limit, HTTP, and PostgreSQL packages. The architecture test checks that core code does not import outer layers.
DTO response schemas in API specifications
docs/docs.go, docs/swagger.json, docs/swagger.yaml
API response references and definitions use DTO-namespaced schemas. The documented endpoints, status codes, and descriptions remain unchanged.
Setup and architecture guides
README.md, docs/architecture.md, docs/authentication.md, docs/rate-limiting.md, docs/setup.md, docs/storage-and-caching.md
The README links to new guides covering architecture, authentication, rate limiting, setup, and storage. The guides describe the documented configuration and service flows.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4f757

Clarify which production secrets have a 32-byte minimum. The ambiguity warrants a documentation correction but does not, on the supplied evidence, block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4f757

The main authentication controls remain in place, but new setup guidance overstates which credentials receive production-length validation. That can give operators false confidence without changing the validator itself.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: New setup guidance says production enforces a 32-byte minimum for each listed secret, but the existing validator does not apply that check to the listed mail password. This is an operational-control mismatch, not a newly weakened runtime validator.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The rate-limit move affects unauthenticated authentication and recovery requests, but inspected valid-request paths retain an HTTP IP gate followed by the relevant core subject or token gate. The documentation finding affects operator understanding of production credential checks, not the validator’s existing runtime reachability.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained configuration finding is a mismatch between new production setup guidance and the unchanged four-secret length check. The evidence does not establish that this PR made short mail or OAuth credentials newly acceptable at runtime.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The HTTP adapter derives IP identity through the request context and checks the IP policy; core login normalizes the email and checks the account policy before credential lookup. Refresh retains an HTTP IP check before cookie processing and core token rotation.
  • observed — Malformed reset-token IDs are rejected before the moved core token policy runs; valid IDs encounter that policy before password hashing and database work. The HTTP IP policy remains a countervailing control for malformed requests.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Core rate-limit checks fail closed on limiter or backend errors. A failed reset after successful login is instead best-effort, so limiter state can remain until its window expires; the base error-handling comparison remains incomplete.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align setup guidance with the four credentials actually subject to the production 32-byte check, and distinguish provider-issued mail credentials from application-generated secrets.

Name the secrets covered by the production length check.

Production validation enforces a minimum of 32 bytes for JWT_ACCESS_SECRET, REFRESH_TOKEN_HASH_KEY, SESSION_SECRET, and RATE_LIMIT_KEY. It does not apply this check to email or OAuth credentials. Replace the ambiguous wording:
