All you need to run Redcar is Ruby (note: you do not need JRuby).
The easiest way to install Redcar is through Rubygems. Once you have Rubygems installed, install with:
sudo gem install redcar
sudo redcar install
Common problems
I’ve installed the gem, but when I try to run Redcar I get “redcar: command not found”
You don’t have the Rubygem binary directory in your path. (For instance, Ubuntu doesn’t set this up automatically). You can run Redcar with a full path to the binary (On Ubuntu: /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/redcar) or you can add the gem binary directory to your path (On Ubuntu, the directory is /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin).
OK, I’ve done that, but still when I run “sudo redcar install” I get “sudo: redcar: command not found”
The bin directories visible to sudo are different to the ones you can see. So you don’t have the Rubygem binary directory in your sudo env path. It’s simplest to run the install command with the full path (e.g. “sudo /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/redcar install”).
