Description

Adds pydantic bounds to the sampling parameters on trtllm-serve request models (CompletionRequest, ChatCompletionRequest, ResponsesRequest): temperature >= 0, top_p in [0, 1], top_k >= 0, and min_p in [0, 1].

On current main these invalid values are already rejected with a 400 by SamplingParams._validate after the request is accepted. The benefit of validating at the request-model boundary is an earlier, field-specific error — surfaced as a 400 by the server's RequestValidationError handler — and bounds that are visible in the OpenAPI schema, so clients see the valid ranges without triggering errors. Relates to the class of issues in #6329.

Test Plan

  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_openai_protocol_validation.py: parametrized boundary tests over all three request models (valid boundary values accepted; negative temperature, out-of-range top_p/min_p, negative top_k rejected with field-specific ValidationError).
  • Registered in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml so CI executes it.

Dev Engineer Review

The request models now apply field-level bounds to sampling parameters. temperature must be non-negative; top_p and applicable min_p values must be in [0, 1]; and applicable top_k values must be non-negative. Defaults and sampling conversion behavior remain unchanged. These constraints add request-model validation and schema bounds.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_openai_protocol_validation.py adds parameterized checks for rejected values, accepted boundaries, and failing-field locations across completion, chat, and Responses requests. The test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Test execution results were not supplied. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the declared bounds.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_protocol.py: Verify that request-model validation rejects out-of-range sampling values and accepts the documented bounds. Confirm defaults and sampling conversion remain unchanged.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_openai_protocol_validation.py: Covers sampling-boundary acceptance and field-specific rejection. The test is listed in the l0_cpu CI test list.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml: Adds the protocol-validation test to the CPU CI list.

No QA test-list update is needed.

This PR only adds narrow unit tests under tests/unittest/; an integration or performance QA-list entry is unnecessary. Model-level boundary coverage is present; add route-level coverage separately if the HTTP-status contract remains in scope.

Addressed in cb72e18: added description= with the allowed ranges to temperature, top_p, and top_k across the completion/chat/responses request models.

Generated by an AI-assisted triage bot; please correct any mistaken assumptions.

Your change gives clients clearer, earlier feedback for invalid sampling values. In the serving paths I inspected, those values were already rejected without terminating the server, so the demonstrated benefit is limited to error reporting.

Based on the assessment above, we're giving this PR lower review priority for now and adding waiting for feedback and stale.

Evidence that malformed sampling parameters can terminate service or disrupt other requests, rather than only fail the malformed request, would warrant reconsideration.

You're welcome to reply, update the PR description, or request maintainer review; a code change is not necessarily required. If there is no further activity for 14 days, this PR will be automatically closed.

Responding to triage before the auto-close window: this adds request-model validation for sampling params in trtllm-serve so invalid client values (e.g. negative top_k, out-of-range temperature) are rejected at the Pydantic boundary with a field-specific 400, instead of propagating into the executor and surfacing as opaque 500s mid-generation. Same validation philosophy as the merged #17737 (empty prompt list) and #17730 (--server_role) — fail at the API edge with the field name, not deep in the stack. Happy to rebase onto current main if a maintainer wants to pick this up.

Thanks, the bounds look right and match SamplingParams._validate. Two things before this can go in:

  1. Please add unittest/llmapi/apps/test_openai_protocol_validation.py to tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Otherwise the test never runs in CI.
  2. Please correct the description and test docstring. On current main these values are already rejected with a 400 from SamplingParams validation, and the new pydantic error is also returned as 400 (not 422) by the server's RequestValidationError handler. The benefit is an earlier, field-specific error and schema bounds, not a crash fix.

Optional: also bound min_p to [0, 1] for consistency, and add description= to the ResponsesRequest fields. Then please rebase onto current main.

Invalid sampling parameters (e.g. top_k=-1, top_p=2.0, negative
temperature) reached the backend and could crash the server with an
unhandled error. Add pydantic Field bounds mirroring SamplingParams'
own constraints (top_k>=0, 0<=top_p<=1, temperature>=0) to
CompletionRequest, ChatCompletionRequest and ResponsesRequest so bad
input is rejected at the API boundary (HTTP 422) instead of crashing.
No currently-valid request is newly rejected.

…m, bound min_p

- Register test_openai_protocol_validation.py in l0_cpu.yml so CI runs it.
- Correct the test docstring: these values were already rejected with a
  400 by SamplingParams._validate; the pydantic bounds give an earlier,
  field-specific error (also surfaced as 400 via the server's
  RequestValidationError handler) and schema-visible bounds — not a
  crash fix.
- Bound min_p to [0, 1] on CompletionRequest and ChatCompletionRequest

- Add description= to the constrained ResponsesRequest fields.

Thanks @karljang — all four items done in a74bbe6 (rebased onto today's main):

  1. Test registered in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml next to the other llmapi/apps entries.
  2. Claims corrected in the test docstring (PR description updated too): these values were already rejected with a 400 by SamplingParams._validate; what the pydantic bounds add is an earlier, field-specific error — also surfaced as 400 via the RequestValidationError handler, not 422 as I'd originally written — plus bounds visible in the OpenAPI schema.
  3. min_p bounded to [0, 1] on both CompletionRequest and ChatCompletionRequest, with parametrized tests for -0.1 and 1.1.
  4. description= added to the constrained ResponsesRequest fields.

yapf/ruff clean against main's baseline. One honest caveat: I can't execute the test suite locally (no mpi4py/GPU stack on this machine), so CI is the verification — which item 1 now guarantees.

Test explicit min_p boundaries.

min_p is inclusive at 0.0 and 1.0, but the tests only reject out-of-range values. Add a parameterized acceptance test for both values using the completion and chat builders.

Assert the field location for each validation error.

The builders provide valid required fields, and each rejection case changes one sampling field. However, pytest.raises(ValidationError) alone does not prove that the intended field caused the error. Capture the exception and assert its location for temperature, top_p, min_p, and top_k.

Suggested assertion pattern
-    with pytest.raises(ValidationError):
+    with pytest.raises(ValidationError) as exc_info:
         build(temperature=-0.1)
+    assert ("temperature",) in {
+        tuple(error["loc"]) for error in exc_info.value.errors()
+    }

Apply the same pattern to the other rejection tests with their corresponding field names.

Pushed 20fcc50 to fix the pre-commit failure (ruff-format wanted the _chat helper on one line). While in the file I took CodeRabbit's two nitpicks since they back up the corrected claim: rejection tests now assert the failing field's loc (temperature / top_p / min_p / top_k), and there's an inclusive-boundary acceptance test for min_p at 0.0 and 1.0. Test-only change; openai_protocol.py is unchanged from a74bbe6.
