Description

This PR adds per-layer dynamic EPLB, a third expert-parallel load-balancing mode next to offline and online EPLB, for the MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL MoE backend. It is selected with moe_config.load_balancer.mode: per_layer_dynamic:

enable_attention_dp: true
cuda_graph_config: null
moe_config:
backend: MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL # AUTO resolves to it
  load_balancer:
    mode: per_layer_dynamic
    num_slots: 408 # 384 experts + 3 helper slots per rank x EP8
    auxiliary_sms: 4 # optional, 1 to 8 (default 4)
    helper_slot_mode: per_layer_resident # optional (default), or shared_banks

Why

Offline EPLB keeps one expert placement for the whole run. Online EPLB refreshes layer_updates_per_iter layers per iteration from decayed statistics. Both follow the average load.

In context-heavy serving with attention DP, the hot experts change from one batch to the next and from one layer to the next, and the most loaded EP rank sets the MoE time of every rank. Per-layer dynamic EPLB re-plans every MoE layer on every forward pass from the routing of that pass, and moves the hot experts' weights on the GPU. It needs no host statistics, no host collectives, no host weight staging and no steady-state host waits.

How it works

For each MoE layer on each forward pass, one CPU thread submits work to two streams: MAIN, and COPY, a highest-priority stream shared by all layers.

  1. Plan and copy (COPY). MAIN computes the routes and enqueues one kernel on COPY. The kernel has auxiliary_sms CTAs, one per SM.
    • HALO-Q: the CTAs exchange routed-token counts with the other EP ranks. CTA 0 picks the hot experts for each rank's helper slots, and the other CTAs map every route to a resident or helper slot.
    • In-switch copy: the same CTAs then copy the picked experts' weights (the seven NVFP4 kernel-format planes) into the receiving ranks' helper slots through NVLink multicast with TMA, and publish a READY generation.
  2. Overlap (MAIN). Meanwhile, MAIN runs the work that does not need the routes: input quantization and, for DeepSeek-V4, the shared experts, which model code passes in with MoE.load_balancer_overlap(fn). These kernels leave auxiliary_sms SMs free:
    • the FP4 and FP8 quantize ops gain reserved-SM variants;
    • DeepSeek-V4's shared experts run on the fused MegaMoE FC12 kernel with the same SM budget.
  3. MegaMoE (MAIN). Before its first route read, MAIN waits with cuStreamWaitValue64 until every CTA of the COPY kernel has written its routes, then launches MegaMoE. MegaMoE reads a helper tile only once its READY generation is visible (system-scope acquire). So MegaMoE overlaps the copy instead of waiting for it.
  4. Reuse. After MegaMoE, MAIN records a consumer event, and COPY waits on it before the next plan. Every rank enters HALO-Q's all-rank exchange only after its own previous MegaMoE, and the copy follows the exchange. So no rank overwrites a helper slot while any rank still reads it.

What is in this PR

  • Configuration (tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_args.py):
    • moe_config.load_balancer becomes a union discriminated by mode.
      • standard is today's offline and online EPLB. It is the default, so existing configs, YAML files and dicts without mode keep working.
      • per_layer_dynamic accepts only num_slots, auxiliary_sms and helper_slot_mode.
    • With per_layer_dynamic:
      • AUTO resolves to MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL, and any other explicit backend is rejected.
      • Decode CUDA graphs are turned off with a warning, and prefill CUDA graphs are rejected.
    • The new fields are status="prototype". The serve-config schemas and the LLM-args golden manifest are regenerated.
  • Kernels and ops:
    • cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/moe/loadBalance/dynamicEplb/ has HALO-Q, the fused HALO-Q + copy kernel and the GPU copy-plan builder.
    • cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/moe/loadBalance/ has the THOP ops. Builds for other targets get placeholder ops that return an error.
    • fp4Quantize.cpp and fp8Quantize.cpp add reserved-SM variants and keep their existing APIs.
  • Runtime:
    • fused_moe/per_layer_dynamic_eplb/ sits next to moe_load_balancer.py, which stays its only entry point:
      • manager.py is the model-owned manager: copy stream, auxiliary SMs, helper banks, EP communicator and collective shutdown. It shares BaseMoeLoadBalancer with standard EPLB, and both plug into the existing seams: maybe_create_moe_load_balancer, _load_balancer_route, the post-run_moe hook, MoeLoadBalancerIterContext and MoERunContext.replica_plan.
      • layer.py is the per-layer handle: plan / finish, READY generation, arena allocation and producer binding.
      • planner.py orders the two streams and the plan generations.
      • arena.py allocates the helper slots as CUDA fabric memory bound to NVLink multicast objects. MegaMoE's live weight planes alias that memory; the quant method allocates and binds them through the layer handle.
    • Backends opt in with the supports_per_layer_dynamic_eplb capability and only consume MoERunContext.replica_plan.
  • Kernel sources. Both trees are maintained in-tree as TensorRT-LLM code, with no vendor-lock entry and no patch:
  • Executor and LLM API:
    • When per-layer dynamic EPLB is configured, CUDA_SCALE_LAUNCH_QUEUES=4x is applied before CUDA initialization, in the main process and in MPI, Ray and direct workers. Other configurations do not set it.
    • Rebalance submission binds the one execution stream that every executor of a model engine uses, so warmup and serving need no hand-off.
    • Worker shutdown (MPI, Ray, RPC) releases the model-scoped resources collectively. Ranks agree on cleanup failures before a commit point, and failed releases stay retryable. Background-thread errors are raised only after every rank has passed the commit point.
  • Docs: examples/wide_ep/README.md, examples/wide_ep/ep_load_balancer/README.md (walkthrough, example and constraints), docs/source/features/parallel-strategy.md and MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md.

Constraints. The full list is in examples/wide_ep/ep_load_balancer/README.md.

  • MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL with NVFP4 MoE weights and at most 384 routed experts.
  • SM100, SM103 or SM107, with all EP ranks in one NVLink multicast domain.
  • Attention DP with pure EP, an even EP size from 2 to 32, and no MoE smart router.
  • No CUDA graphs and no DWDP.
  • Not with LoadFormat.GMS, the same as for any load balancer.

Unlike standard mode, an unsupported setup raises an error instead of silently running without a load balancer.

Changes since the last review round (35521ce)

  • Rebased on main (557ddca). [TRTLLM-14558][chore] Split cute_dsl_kernels/ into the domain kernel trees and consolidate the thop unit tests #19275 split cute_dsl_kernels/, so the MegaMoE sources moved to tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/kernels/: cutedsl_megamoe/, megamoe_scheduler/, megamoe_kernels.py and megamoe_shared_fc12.py. Two tests moved with them. Their contents are unchanged apart from import paths.

  • cutedsl_megamoe synced to upstream f0747157 (from 7832a330). Of the new upstream commits, only the Rubin combine-dedup change touches files TensorRT-LLM carries. It brings:

    • an opt-in combine-dedup path (combine_dedup, default off, BF16 combine only);
    • a new TokenSrcMetadata packing, which limits max_tokens_per_rank to 65536;
    • token_back_mode="hybrid_warps";
    • correct sizing of the mixed-CGA fallback table;
    • a proxy fence before the Rubin FC2 done flag.

The compile key gains a _nodedup suffix, so existing CuTe DSL JIT caches are rebuilt once. No TensorRT-LLM caller changes. Nothing from this PR needs to go back upstream.

  • HALO-Q and the in-switch copy are fused into one kernel. Before, they were two launches on COPY, and MAIN waited on an event between them. Now:

    • Each of the auxiliary_sms CTAs takes its HALO-Q role, then adds one to a per-layer route epoch with a system-scope release. It waits until all CTAs have done so, then copies the plan.
    • MAIN waits on that epoch with cuStreamWaitValue64 instead of an event, so the wait holds no SM.
    • The kernel runs in the remote memory-sync domain, so fences in MegaMoE and other default-domain kernels do not wait for the copy's NVLink traffic.
    • Binding the copy loads the kernel and reserves its local memory. Doing that at the first launch would wait for the device, which can deadlock against kernels that spin on later work.

MAIN's wait completes only after every CTA has written its routes, so all copy CTAs are resident before MegaMoE launches. MegaMoE therefore cannot occupy the SMs the copy needs. This closes, by construction, the copy-starvation case raised in review; that case was never observed in testing.

auxiliary_sms now sizes both phases, so its range is 1 to 8 (it was 8 to 128), and it defaults to 4 (it was 8).

  • New helper_slot_mode, default per_layer_resident. HALO-Q's placement is stable across forward passes: a layer often puts the same expert into the same helper slot of the same ranks as in its previous pass. Yet every pass copied all of them again.

    • With per_layer_resident, every MoE layer has its own helper slots, and the copy keeps a per-layer table of the expert each helper slot holds. A copy whose receiving ranks all hold the expert already moves no data, and READY is still published.
    • The last CTA of each copy updates the table from the HALO-Q placement, which every rank has, so all ranks keep the same table.
    • The cost is one helper set per MoE layer: about 6.4 GiB per GPU for DeepSeek-V4-Pro with 3 helper slots per rank.
    • shared_banks keeps the previous layout: two helper banks that all layers alternate between, refilled on every pass.
  • Lower host overhead per MoE layer. On short-prompt prefill the rank-0 host path is close to the GPU time per iteration, and per-layer dynamic EPLB adds host work per MoE layer. These changes do not change outputs:

    • raw torch._C stream and device switches replace the context managers;
    • the MAIN-stream check returns early for the bound stream;
    • eager MegaMoE launches call the op implementation directly, and torch.compile still uses the registered op;
    • each backend caches the CuTe views of its weights, keyed on data pointer, shape, stride, dtype, device and alignment;
    • one redundant tactic-key computation is gone.
  • Less host work per MoE layer with the load balancer on. Outputs are unchanged:

    • the plan no longer calls record_stream on the routes for COPY. The plan group keeps the routes alive until MAIN has queued its route-epoch wait (routes are allocated on MAIN), and a new plan is refused while a launched route is still unwaited. This removes about 3,400 allocator cudaEventQuery calls per iteration on rank 0;
    • the bound reuse authority is checked by identity per layer, and repeated route waits in one plan generation return early;
    • MegaMoE launch buffers, their CuTe views and the READY-flag pointer are reused across layers, and the int32-to-int64 route widening is folded into the staging copy, one kernel fewer per layer;
    • the fused-communication MoE scheduler skips no-op slices, splits and casts;
    • MegaMoE runners that opted into tactic autotuning are reused outside tuning mode.

On GB200 (nsys, arm B) rank-0 _forward_step time drops from about 325 to 293 ms per iteration. Throughput does not change there, because GB200 is GPU-bound in this setup.

  • DeepSeek-V4's fused shared-expert kernel on the whole SM100 family. The fused shared FC1/activation/FC2 kernel that comes with the MegaMoE backend ran only on SM107. It now runs on SM100, SM103 and SM107 when the routed backend provides it, the shared expert uses 128-element FP8 block scales, and the model runs eagerly. It no longer depends on the load balancer, so arms with and without it run the same shared-expert kernel.

    • On SM100 and SM103 Linear keeps FP32 K128 block scales. The shared MLP asks it to round them to UE8M0 at load (round_block_scales_to_ue8m0), and derives the kernel's MXFP8 scale layout from them once.
    • With the load balancer on it leaves auxiliary_sms SMs free, like the quantize ops.
    • It keeps a packed copy of FC1, so on GB200 the KV cache gets about 2.2 GiB less per rank.
  • Lower host overhead per request (independent of EPLB). In short-prompt prefill, rank 0 handles about a thousand requests per iteration. Messages and per-module log levels are unchanged:

    • SamplingParams computes its SamplingConfig and OutputConfig field names once;
    • Logger.log() and is_debug_enabled() skip the caller-module stack walk when no per-module levels are set and the global level filters the message.
  • ENABLE_PERFECT_ROUTER=expert_ids, opt-in and for performance analysis only: outputs are wrong by design.

    • It keeps the learned router, and replaces the routed expert IDs in the MoE scheduler with a perfectly balanced assignment for any token count. The assignment comes from one table, sized once to max_num_tokens.
    • Unlike ENABLE_PERFECT_ROUTER=1, it also balances DeepSeek-V4's hash layers and synthesizes no logits per token count.
    • With the load balancer off, it bounds what any MoE load balancer can gain (arm C below). It logs a warning once on backends that route inside their kernel.
  • Layer-wise benchmarks:

    • --moe-load-balancer enables per-layer dynamic EPLB without CUDA graphs, or static standard EPLB;
    • forwards run inside the load balancer's iteration context, and eager runs warm up on the stream they are timed on;
    • DeepSeek-V4 slices may start mid-model;
    • unsupported combinations are rejected up front: per-layer dynamic EPLB with CUDA graphs, online EPLB on a slice, and replay with expert_ids.
  • Opt-in benchmark settings (independent of EPLB). Defaults are unchanged, and both are documented in perf-benchmarking.md. Both remove rank-0 host stalls that made every other rank wait at the attention-DP allgather in context-only runs, in every arm alike.

    • TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS=1: the proxy pickles each request on the submitting thread, and a sender thread sends each burst to the rank-0 worker as one HMAC-signed message of up to 1024 requests. The worker, on a thread that shares the GIL with the executor loop, then does one receive and one HMAC check per burst instead of one per request.
    • TRTLLM_BENCH_DISABLE_GC=1: trtllm-bench throughput and latency collect once after warmup, freeze the surviving objects, and disable the cyclic GC for the measured run. This matches TRTLLM_SERVER_DISABLE_GC and TRTLLM_WORKER_DISABLE_GC.
  • HALO-Q timeout during warmup. The all-rank exchange and the route-epoch wait fail closed after a bounded spin (8e9 cycles, about 4 s, in steady state). Rank skew during executor warmup and autotuning is far longer, and it trapped warmup on both GB200 and VR200, including the default serving warmup. The bound is now chosen per launch through the existing MoE communication timeout guard: during warmup and autotuning it is the MoE communication warmup timeout (TRTLLM_MOE_COMM_WARMUP_TIMEOUT_SEC, default 1800 s), otherwise TRTLLM_MOE_COMM_TIMEOUT_SEC if set, else 8e9 cycles.

Known limitations and follow-ups

  • HALO-Q exchange timeout in steady state. Outside warmup the exchange still fails closed after 8e9 cycles (about 4 s) unless TRTLLM_MOE_COMM_TIMEOUT_SEC is set: the copy traps without publishing READY. None of the runs below hit it.
  • GB200 stays about 1% behind uniform routing. On VR200, B matches C. On GB200, nsys on two ranks puts most of the gap in MegaMoE itself: after every rank has reached the MegaMoE router, the kernel still runs about 40 µs per layer longer in B than in C, and the helper copy has already finished by then. The Blackwell MegaMoE kernel signals FC2 completion per expert only, so with real, uneven expert loads the combine waits for whole experts. The Rubin kernel can also signal per token tile, and B on VR200 selects that in every token bucket. Token-tile completion for the Blackwell kernel belongs in the upstream MegaMoE sources first, so it is left as a follow-up. The rest of the gap is the shared expert's smaller SM budget and the extra plan synchronization.
  • Multi-node launcher teardown. After a two-node trtllm-llmapi-launch run finishes, the step lingers a few minutes before it exits. This is unrelated to this PR; benchmark harnesses kill the step after the results are written.
  • Follow-ups from review:
    • the live-weight arena is still allocated from the backend's create_weights, through the layer handle;
    • the helper-slot count and the quantize SM budget are fixed at construction;
    • plan finish and rollback remain explicit calls next to run_moe.

No unit test launches HALO-Q or the copy kernel on a GPU. The end-to-end runs below cover them.

Accuracy (GSM8K)

DeepSeek-V4-Pro NVFP4, EP8 with attention DP, per-layer dynamic EPLB on (num_slots 408, 3 helper slots per rank, helper_slot_mode per_layer_resident), FP4 combine, max_num_tokens 8192, all 1319 samples. The reference threshold is 92.80.

Platform Strict match Flexible extract Notes
VR200 96.21 96.21 default serving config (no MegaMoE tactic autotune); warmup passes with the default spin bound
GB200 95.98 95.98 same head; warmup passes with the default spin bound

GB200 GSM8K was repeated after the review refactor at b60c594bf (96.36 strict match, 96.44 flexible extract) and after the rebase on main at 9c202d8eb (96.29 / 96.29).

Performance (context-only, A/B/C)

Setup:

  • DeepSeek-V4-Pro NVFP4 on 8 GPUs, attention DP with EP8, MEGAMOE_CUTEDSL with the FP4 combine (MEGAMOE_COMBINE_FORMAT=16e2m1xbf16).
  • Context only: GSM8K prompts (mean ISL about 63 tokens), OSL 1, trtllm-bench throughput.
  • max_num_tokens 8192, max_batch_size 256, chunked prefill, no KV block reuse, no CUDA graphs, MAX_UTILIZATION capacity scheduler.
  • A 64x-replicated GSM8K set: all 562,688 requests per arm on VR200, the first 131,072 per arm on GB200. Concurrency 6144 on VR200 and 12288 on GB200 (GB200 also saturates at 6144).
  • KV pool_ratio [0.55, 0.22, 0.23] on VR200. GB200 has less free HBM: with that ratio its window-8 pool group admits only about 100 context requests per rank per iteration, so GB200 uses [0.24, 0.295, 0.465], which saturates all three arms.
  • Every arm sets TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS=1, TRTLLM_BENCH_DISABLE_GC=1, TRTLLM_WORKER_DISABLE_GC=1, CUDA_SCALE_LAUNCH_QUEUES=4x and MEGAMOE_TACTIC_AUTOTUNE=1.
  • Every arm runs DeepSeek-V4's shared experts on the fused FC12 kernel, so the arms differ only in routed-expert placement.
  • The three arms of a platform ran back to back, in one job on the same nodes.

The arms:

  • A: load balancer off.
  • B: A plus load_balancer: {mode: per_layer_dynamic, num_slots: 408}, which gives 3 helper slots per rank, with auxiliary_sms: 4 and helper_slot_mode: per_layer_resident by default.
  • C: A plus ENABLE_PERFECT_ROUTER=expert_ids, that is, perfectly balanced routing with the load balancer off. Its outputs are wrong by design. C bounds what any MoE load balancer can gain here, so a B/C close to 1 means B recovers most of that bound.
Platform Arm req/s Stable iteration (ms) Saturated share B/A B/C
VR200 A: OFF 4025.1 246.6 100%
VR200 B: ON (fused) 4441.2 222.6 100% 1.103 1.001
VR200 C: OFF + uniform routing 4435.3 222.4 100%
GB200 A: OFF 2284.0 435.1 100%
GB200 B: ON (fused) 2446.0 404.2 100% 1.071 0.990
GB200 C: OFF + uniform routing 2471.0 401.0 100%

On GB200 the balance headroom (C/A) is smaller, and B recovers about 87% of it; Known limitations explains the rest. auxiliary_sms defaults to 4: in a shorter GB200 run (131,072 requests per arm, one job), B ran at 406.9 ms per stable iteration with 4 auxiliary SMs and 407.3 ms with 8.

After the review refactor and the rebase on main, GB200 A/B/C were re-run at 9c202d8eb with the same setup, back to back in one job: 2263.3, 2424.7 and 2442.6 req/s (438.5, 408.0 and 405.3 ms per stable iteration), B/A 1.071, B/C 0.993, in line with the table.

Column definitions:

  • req/s: request throughput reported by trtllm-bench for the whole run.
  • Stable iteration: the mean rank-0 time between consecutive executor iterations. It covers the middle 80% of iterations, without gaps longer than 1.5x the median and without iterations below 0.8x the median token count.
  • Saturated share: the share of the middle 80% of iterations in which every attention-DP rank scheduled at least 0.95 x max_num_tokens context tokens.
  • B/A and B/C: ratios of req/s. Above 1 means B is faster.

Commands

All GPU runs and unit tests used this PR's head on main aeca563, which has the same content as the pushed head apart from main. VR200 installed a Python-only repack of that head on a wheel built from an earlier commit with the same C++ sources. GB200 installed the head's Python files over a wheel of an earlier commit; the C++ changes since that commit are comments only.

The rebase onto a newer main resolved one conflict: both sides add class attributes to MoE in interface.py. On the rebased head, the serve-schema snapshots and the golden manifest regenerate unchanged, and test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py (94) and test_dynamic_eplb_contracts.py (42 passed, 1 skipped) pass. The other tests need a build of the rebased head and run in CI.

  • CPU unit tests, from tests/unittest with CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=, one pytest process per path as CI runs them: 1,102 passed, none failed (_torch/moe 378, test_llm_args.py 433, the other eight files 291):

Explanation

The PR description is thorough and largely complete. It has a clear Description section explaining the per-layer dynamic EPLB feature, why it exists, how it works, and what the PR contains. It covers configuration, kernels, runtime, executor and LLM API changes, docs, known limitations, and a reviewing guide. The Test Coverage section lists unit, contract, GPU, accuracy (GSM8K), and performance results, with exact commands. The PR Checklist is present and annotated. Gaps: the template's PR title format is not addressed in the description body (the title is outside the description provided, so this cannot be verified here); the description does not follow the template's literal heading structure exactly (the @coderabbitai summary line is present, but the Description and Test Coverage sections are present as well). Overall the description is mostly complete and clear, so it passes.

Add MoE rebalance fingerprint tests.

_build_backend_fingerprint includes moe_rebalance only when rebalancing is enabled with a positive helper_slots_per_rank. Add SourceIdentity unit tests for equal identities across unset, disabled, and zero-slot configurations. Add assertions that distinct positive helper-slot counts produce different identities. These tests can catch incompatible helper layouts being accepted or inert configurations being rejected.

4785-4792: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a regression test for the fc1_norm_const resident-slot contract.

_build_fc1_norm_const now has two new behaviors:

  • It writes only fc1_norm_const[:n_home].
  • It raises RuntimeError when the routed count differs from _rebalance_home_experts.

The code keeps helper slots [n_home:] at the 1.0 value that bind_live_weight_planes wrote. No test checks that helper slots are preserved, and no test checks the mismatch error. A later edit could go back to a full-width copy_. That would fail the shape check, or it would overwrite live-arena helper values.

The coverage checks at Lines 4564-4566 and 4636-4638 also switched to _rebalance_home_experts without a test.

Add a CPU test next to the existing MegaMoE quantization tests (the ones that contain test_mega_format_transform_is_slot_blockwise). Use a SimpleNamespace module with these fields:

  • fc1_norm_const = torch.full((H + S,), 1.0)
  • _rebalance_home_experts = H
  • initial_local_expert_ids = list(range(H))
  • tmp_raw_input_scales holding distinct w2 scales

Assert these results:

  • [:H] equals the reciprocals of the w2 scales.
  • [H:] stays at 1.0.
  • When initial_local_expert_ids has H + 1 entries, the method raises RuntimeError.

As per path instructions: "A new or changed validation rule, error path ... with no meaningful test" requires an inline comment that proposes the smallest practical test.

Add a unit test for the resident slot mapping used when rebalance is bypassed.

_resident_slot_ids maps a logical expert ID e to (e // H) * (H + S) + e % H and keeps negative padding IDs. This path runs whenever helper slots exist but is_rebalance_active() is false. That covers ordinary warmup and tuning when the backend has not opted in to autotune. A wrong stride would not raise an error. Tokens would silently go to a helper slot or to another rank's expert, and the output would be wrong.

The cited verification scripts cover the state machine and the is_warmup setter. They do not check this mapping.

Add a small CPU test under tests/unittest/_torch/modules/ (for example, a new test_megamoe_rebalance_slot_ids.py). Use cases such as:

  • H=4, S=2, input [[0, 3, 4, 7, -1]]: the result must equal [[0, 3, 6, 9, -1]], and the dtype must be unchanged.
  • Test both torch.int32 and torch.int64 inputs.

As per path instructions: "A new or changed ... runtime behavior ... with no meaningful test" requires an inline comment that names the untested behavior and proposes a test.

Add a regression test for the warmup-owner handoff.

_handoff_rebalance_warmup_owners is a new lifecycle step. It collects scheduler groups across the target and draft models and deduplicates them by id. Then it synchronizes the device and releases ownership. No test in tests/** covers this path. Missing coverage could hide three failures: a skipped release (serving then binds a stale CPU owner), a double release for a shared group, and a missed draft-model group. The smallest practical test is a unit test in tests/unittest/_torch/executor/. The test builds a stub PyExecutor with mock engines whose modules share one _rebalance_scheduler_group that has _owner_thread_id set. It then asserts one release_warmup_owner_after_sync call with the execution-stream handle. A second case must assert that no call happens when _owner_thread_id is None.

As per path instructions, "For each new or materially changed observable behavior, determine whether this PR adds... a test that meaningfully exercises the change."

tensorrt_llm/_torch/cute_dsl_kernels/cutedsl_megamoe/helpers/dlb_expert_count.py (1)

9-37: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add CPU unit tests for the host-side DLB count normalization and helper topology validation.

resolve_dlb_expert_counts defines a new contract. The physical expert_count becomes logical + total_helper_slots. helper_expert_count becomes total_helper_slots // world_size. It raises on mixed or indivisible inputs. derive_helper_weight_ready_topology and _validate_helper_weight_ready_binding in helper_weight_ready_gate.py are also pure host logic. The supplied context shows no test that exercises these paths. A regression in the arithmetic would misplace helper slots silently. The consequence is routing to the wrong rank, or a READY gate boundary H that disagrees with the weight arena.

Add a small test, for example tests/unittest/_torch/cute_dsl_kernels/test_megamoe_dlb_host_contract.py. It needs no GPU. Cover these cases:

  • No total_helper_slots: the descriptors are returned unchanged.
  • Both total_helper_slots and helper_expert_count are set: ValueError.
  • total_helper_slots is not divisible by world_size: ValueError.
  • The resolved physical expert_count and per-rank helper_expert_count.
  • derive_helper_weight_ready_topology(M, S) with S >= M or S < 0: ValueError.
  • The binding check with S=0 and a READY pointer: ValueError.
  • expected_generation of 0 or 2**63: ValueError.

557-586: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add tests for the new scheduler validation rules.

This hunk adds several new configuration rules to _validate_configuration:

  • dfc1_m_group must be 1 or 16.
  • Grouped dFC1 requires non-swap mode and defer_consumer_until_full_ready.
  • Deferred admission is rejected for mixed CGA configurations.
  • The fused probe requires deferred admission.
  • fc1_prologue_tiles=0 is allowed only in deferred mode.

The constructor also exempts a zero prologue from the minimum-hint check at lines 523-525. No test in this PR exercises these branches. A future edit could silently accept hint=0 without deferred admission. That would make the first FC2 claim skip the FC1 prologue watermark in gen_next_work.

Add a parameterized host-side construction test in tests/unittest/_torch/cute_dsl_kernels/. It builds PhaseInterleavedFc12Scheduler with small valid problem and impl descriptors. It asserts ValueError, TypeError or NotImplementedError for each invalid combination, and successful construction for hint=0 with defer_consumer_until_full_ready=True. Constructing the scheduler needs no GPU launch.

Add a CPU test for the plan-gap forward branch.

The new branch installs a one-shot hook and runs routed experts. It clears the hook in finally and computes shared output only if the hook did not run. No test in this PR covers the following regressions:

  • The shared output is computed twice. This would apply shared_output_scale twice.
  • The hook is not cleared after an exception.
  • A plan-gap forward runs when _rebalance_slots_active == 0 and TRTLLM_MOE_REBALANCE_PLAN_GAP is unset.

Add a test under tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/ that calls DeepseekV4MoE.forward on a stub instance:

  • Use a fake experts whose call optionally invokes _rebalance_plan_gap_hook once or twice, or raises.
  • Use a counting shared_experts.
  • Set shared_output_scale=0.5.

Assert these results:

Add layout-helper tests.

MegaMoESharedMLP.prepare_fc12_weights uses these helpers to build the FC12 weight and scale buffers. A permutation error preserves the tensor shape and can produce incorrect shared-expert output without raising.

528-549: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

No test under tests/** covers the new moe_rebalance_halo_q operator path.

This cohort has no test for these changed behaviors:

  • The valid_tokens prefix contract.
  • The kernel clearing the output tail to -1.
  • The T == 0 empty-rank collective.
  • The algorithm="legacy" path that this change added back.

Without a test, these regressions can pass CI:

  • The tail clear reads the wrong index.
  • valid_route_count is computed as valid_tokens instead of valid_tokens * topk.
  • GAR-N and HALO-Q produce slots outside [0, ep * local_physical_slot_count).

Add a small SM100-gated test. A good location is tests/unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_moe_rebalance_halo_q.py. A second rank is optional, because the test can use ep=2 with both peer bases pointing to one local buffer. The test should:

  • Stage routes with valid_tokens < T and assert that the tail rows equal -1.
  • Assert that every valid slot is in range, and that check_status() passes.
  • Assert that submit() rejects a second stream.

Add the test to the appropriate list in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/. As per path instructions: "A new or changed validation rule, error path, fallback, ... runtime behavior ... with no meaningful test."

HALO-Q's placement is stable across forwards: a layer's broadcasts often put
the same expert into the same helper slot of the same team as in its previous
forward, yet every forward copied all of them again over NVLink beside the
shared expert.

Add moe_config.load_balancer.helper_slot_mode:

- per_layer_resident (default): every MoE layer maps its own helper-slot
set, and the in-switch copy keeps a per-layer table of the expert each
rank's helper slot holds. A broadcast whose whole team already holds its
expert in its helper slot moves no data; READY is still published. The
last CTA of each copy updates the table from the replicated HALO-Q
placement, so every rank keeps the same table. One helper set per layer
costs about 6.4 GiB per GPU for DeepSeek-V4-Pro with 3 helper slots per
  rank.
- shared_banks: the previous behavior, two helper banks that all layers
alternate between, refilled on every forward.

Residency only holds while a layer's own copies are the sole writers of its
helper rows, so it is tied to per-layer helper sets.

The fused HALO-Q + TMA submit now switches to the copy stream through
enter_cuda_stream/exit_cuda_stream. Provide both in the extracted-class
namespace and check that the launch enters the copy stream and restores
the caller's stream afterwards.

…EPLB walkthrough

Step 1 of the walkthrough still described the shared_banks layout as the
only one. State the per_layer_resident default and the shared_banks
alternative there, keep step 3 to the copy skip, and drop the word
"shared" from the parallel-strategy summary.

The batched proxy-to-worker request path deferred pickling to its sender
thread and queued a shallow copy of each request. That changed what the
worker received and how errors were reported:

- Nested objects were pickled in whatever state they had when the sender
ran. trtllm-serve attaches the tokenizer to a completion request's
postproc args right after generate_async returns, so every completion
request shipped the server tokenizer to rank 0, and a SamplingParams
reused and changed after submit reached the worker with its later values.
- A request that could not be pickled failed on the sender thread. The error
landed on the proxy's error queue, which treats it as fatal, so one bad
request killed the engine and dropped the requests batched with it.
- A lone request waited for the sender thread to take the GIL, up to the
interpreter's switch interval while the submitting thread kept running
  Python.

Now the proxy sends through _send_request. By default it puts the request
on the request queue directly, as before. With
TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS=1 it pickles the request on the caller's thread,
so the request is captured at submit and a pickling error is raised to that
caller, and the sender thread sends the queued payloads as one list in one
HMAC-signed message. The worker unpickles each payload of a list message.
Only transport errors on the sender thread stay fatal. Without the
environment variable no sender thread is created, so the earlier test
fixture changes are reverted.

Documents TRTLLM_BENCH_DISABLE_GC and TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS with their
trade-offs in the benchmarking guide. Moves the sender tests to l0_cpu and
covers the snapshot, pickling-error and worker-unpacking behavior.

…re it cannot apply

ENABLE_PERFECT_ROUTER=expert_ids kept one table per expert geometry and
grew it by replacing it with a larger one. That freed storage that CUDA
graphs captured earlier still read, and a table rebuilt on the MoE chunking
aux stream could be read on the main stream before it was written.

The table is now sized once. MoE records model_config.max_num_tokens, the
bound on the local tokens of every MoE call, in _init_perfect_router; the
table is built with that many rows on the first call, not at construction,
where the module can still be on the meta device. It is never replaced, and
the current stream is synchronized after the build so other streams can
read it. A call above the bound raises a ValueError, and a first call during
CUDA graph capture raises a RuntimeError.

Backends that route inside their kernel, such as TRTLLM without attention
DP, take the scheduler's fused-routing branch, which has no expert ids to
replace. That branch now logs a warning once when the mode is set, and the
docs say where the mode applies and that layer-wise replay overrides it.

…nd replay setups

- run.py rejects --replay-file-path together with
ENABLE_PERFECT_ROUTER=expert_ids. The calibrator replays the recorded
expert IDs after the substitution, so the perfect-router arm silently
  measured the recorded routing.
- Runner rejects, before the model loads, per-layer dynamic EPLB with CUDA
graphs, which failed at warmup with a scheduler error, and online standard
EPLB, which synchronizes every MoE layer of the model while only a slice
runs here and failed in finalize_model or hung.
- README: the DeepSeek-V4 commands pass --tokens-per-block 128, which its
cache manager requires, and --max-seq-len 512, since 256 or less trips an
assert in its sparse-attention top-k. They use the tested 64 x 128 batch
and the FP4 combine. The text now says that replay overrides the
expert_ids substitution and that a recording fixes num_slots, so one
recording cannot serve both the load-balancer-off and per-layer dynamic
  arms.

…e caller-lookup test

tensorrt_llm/__init__.py re-exports the Logger singleton as
tensorrt_llm.logger, so `import tensorrt_llm.logger as logger_module` bound
the singleton instead of the submodule, and monkeypatching
_get_caller_module on it raised AttributeError on every run. Fetch the
module with importlib.import_module, and set the singleton's severity and
module levels through monkeypatch so they are restored even when the test
fails and do not depend on TLLM_LOG_LEVEL_BY_MODULE.

…eardown

With TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS=1, GenerationExecutorProxy.__del__ runs
shutdown() again during interpreter finalization and closes the request
sender a second time. Joining its thread there fails once the threading
module's globals are cleared ("TypeError: 'NoneType' object is not
subscriptable" from current_thread()), and if the thread had not been
stopped yet the join cannot finish, because a daemon thread can no longer
run.

_RequestSender.close() now returns at once while sys.is_finalizing() is
true: it neither wakes the thread to flush through ZMQ nor joins it. The
check is bound at construction, since module globals may be None by then.
Outside finalization, close() still sends everything queued and joins the
thread, and later calls return at once. pre_shutdown() still flushes the
queued payloads before the shutdown sentinel; a new test covers that order,
and others cover repeated and teardown-time close().

…r thread

With TRTLLM_PROXY_BATCH_REQUESTS=1, the first write to request_queue comes
from the sender thread. pre_shutdown then joined that thread and wrote the
shutdown sentinel from its own thread. With TLLM_LLMAPI_ZMQ_DEBUG=1,
ZeroMqQueue's thread check rejected that write with a RuntimeError before
the sentinel went out, so rank 0 stayed in request_queue.get() and
interpreter exit could hang joining the MPI pool.

The request queue now keeps one writing thread. pre_shutdown decides
whether a sentinel is due, as before, and passes that to
_close_request_sender. If the sender thread has started, it sends the
sentinel itself, as a bare None after the last batched payload. The caller
writes the sentinel only when there is no sender, or when the sender thread
never started or had already stopped. During interpreter finalization a
started sender still skips both the flush and the sentinel.

The test stand-in queue now rejects writes from a second thread, as
ZeroMqQueue does in debug mode. New tests cover the sentinel coming from the
sender thread after the queued requests, and from the caller when nothing
else wrote, with and without batching.

…meout during warmup

HALO-Q waits for every EP rank inside the kernel, in its count exchange and,
in the fused kernel, for the route epoch, and traps once a peer is later than
SPIN_CYCLES (8e9 cycles, about 4 s). Executor warmup and AutoTuner profiling
skew healthy ranks by far more than that: on VR200 the ON arm died in warmup
with CUDA error 719 inside the plan-gap shared-expert FC12 profiling at
num_tokens=8192, which then surfaced as a failed cuStreamWaitValue64.

The scheduler already takes its spin bound as a kernel argument, so choose it
per launch:

- SchedulerSpinBound is a MoE communication timeout proxy, one per model,
registered by PerLayerDynamicMoeLoadBalancer and released at shutdown. The
model engine's is_warmup transitions switch it like every other MoE
communication kernel: the warmup timeout (1800 s by default) during warmup
and the serving timeout or the native SPIN_CYCLES otherwise. Launches while
AutoTuner is tuning, such as profiling outside the executor's warmup, also
  get the warmup timeout.
- fused_submit_args, submit_fused and the standalone launch/submit/run take
spin_cycles; the startup HALO-Q launch always uses the warmup bound.
- Timeouts convert to cycles at the nominal 2 GHz clock that the MoE
  all-to-all kernels assume.

No kernel or C++ change; no new environment variable.

…rom comments

megamoe_shared_mlp.py was the only file in tensorrt_llm/_torch/modules/
with the pre-SPDX header line; switch it to the SPDX form that its
siblings use.

Rewrite comments in the HALO-Q kernel, the TMA copy header, the MegaMoE
CuTe DSL custom op and a MoE backend test that compared the code with
earlier versions of itself ("the old linear scan", "used to run",
"as before"), so that they describe the code as it stands. Comment-only
change.

…p a duplicate CPU test entry

Reword three comments in the dynamic EPLB kernels that compared the code
with earlier versions. Remove the explicit l0_cpu entry for
test_megamoe_shared_fc12_autotune.py: the unittest/_torch/moe directory
entry already collects it, so the file ran twice on the CPU stage.

The spin bound asks AutoTuner whether kernels are being profiled, and
creating the AutoTuner singleton reads the CUDA device name, which fails
on the CPU-only l0_cpu stage. Stub AutoTuner.get in the test, and check
that a profiling AutoTuner gets the warmup bound.

…am event

plan_schedule() protected the logical routes that HALO-Q reads on the copy
stream with record_stream(). When such a block is freed, the caching
allocator records an event on the copy stream and then queries it on every
later allocation until the copy stream reaches it. The copy stream runs
behind the host by up to an iteration, so on GB200 rank 0 every iteration
paid about 3,400 cudaEventQuery calls (6 ms of API time under nsys), and
the OFF arm none.

The scheduler group now holds the routes until wait_for_routes() queues
MAIN's wait on the route epoch. Each HALO-Q CTA reads its routes before it
raises that epoch with a system-scope release, so once MAIN has queued the
wait, a block the allocator returns to MAIN can only be reused by work
queued after it. Per-layer dynamic EPLB already rejects CUDA graphs, and
the routes are produced on MAIN.

wait_for_routes() also returns at once for a generation whose wait is
already queued; MegaMoE calls it up to three times per layer.

The copy endpoint validates its generation reuse authority when the
authority is bound, and binding is single-assignment. Each layer's submit
re-ran that validation twice, once to prove the previous generation
reusable and once before the fused launch. Compare the bound authority by
identity on that path instead. Also import MoEReplicaPlan once at module
scope rather than on every route call.

… layers

Every MegaMoE launch rebuilt state that is fixed for a bucket, once per
layer:

- MegaMoeSymmMemProvider.get_regions() re-sliced the five symmetric
regions; the provider now builds them once per inference-mode state (a
view made under inference mode cannot be updated in place outside it).
- The backend rebuilt the per-bucket _MegaMoeBuffers bundle; it is now
built once per (bucket, top_k, hidden, device, dtype, inference mode).
- The runner converted the activation, activation SF, top-k weights,
top-k indices and combine output with from_dlpack every launch. When the
backend launches on its staged buffers it now hands the op its
provider's cute-view cache: the symmetric regions are keyed by every
field a view encodes, the combine output keeps one slot because its live
rows change per iteration but not per layer, and the module's staging
indices join its weight cache. Tuning launches still convert afresh.
- Workspace and READY-flag pointers are cached by (address, alignment),
the only fields a cute pointer encodes; the stream wrapper comes from
the raw current stream; unique_id() is built once per runner.
- SM100 routes were widened to int64 by a separate cast kernel before
being copied into the int64 staging buffer. The staging copy now widens
them itself, so the first route reader, and the route wait, move to that
  copy.

All of these produce the same kernel arguments as before.

…E scheduler

FusedCommMoEScheduler sliced x, the router logits and the input ids to the
local token count, split them into chunks and cast the routes and scales
on every layer, even when the slice covers the whole tensor, a single
chunk covers it, or the dtype already matches. In context-only serving
each of these is a no-op that still costs a dispatcher call per layer. Use
the tensor itself in those cases; padded inputs and multi-chunk forwards
are sliced and split as before.

With MEGAMOE_TACTIC_AUTOTUNE=1 every MegaMoE launch constructed a new
runner and a new TuningConfig, because a runner that may profile owns
profiling scratch. Outside tuning mode choose_one only looks up the tuned
tactic and never profiles, so cache that runner like the opted-out one and
create fresh runners only while the AutoTuner is tuning. Each runner builds
its TuningConfig once; the profiling pre-hook stays bound to that runner.
The autotune path now also drops its READY-flag reference after the launch,
as the opted-out path does.

…unwaited

The scheduler group holds the routes of a HALO-Q launch until MAIN waits
for its route epoch. Take that reference only right before the launch, so
a plan that fails earlier leaves nothing behind, and refuse the next plan
while a launch's routes are still held: only a submission that failed after
launching leaves them, and dropping them would let the allocator hand their
block to MAIN work while HALO-Q may still read it.

…mily

With per-layer dynamic EPLB, DeepSeek-V4 runs its shared expert while the
fused HALO-Q + in-switch copy kernel plans and copies helper weights. The
fused shared FC1/activation/FC2 kernel takes an SM budget that leaves the
copy kernel its auxiliary SMs. Select it on every SM100-family GPU instead
of SM107 only, so GB200 and GB300 no longer run the shared expert's two
DeepGEMM GEMMs alongside the copy.

Signed-off-by: jintaop <jintaop@nvidia.com>
DeepSeek-V4 selected the fused shared FC1/activation/FC2 kernel only with
per-layer dynamic EPLB, so turning the load balancer on also swapped the
shared expert from GatedMLP's two DeepGEMM GEMMs to the fused kernel.
Select the fused kernel whenever the routed MegaMoE backend, the final
projection quantization and the SM100 family allow it and the model runs
eagerly, with or without the load balancer. An eager EPLB-off baseline then
runs the same shared expert, and enabling EPLB adds only expert placement
and the fused kernel's SM budget.

…ad on SM100 and SM103

Linear converts FP8 block scales to the CuTe DSL MXFP8 layout (UE8M0 K32
R128c4) only on SM107, where its own GEMM reads that layout. On SM100 and
SM103 it keeps FP32 K128 scales, so the fused shared FC12 kernel rejected
them at its first forward. MegaMoESharedMLP now asks its two projections to
round those scales to UE8M0 during Linear's post-load transform, as the
DeepGEMM transform does, keeping the FP32 K128 layout so Linear's own GEMM
stays valid. The fused kernel derives its R128c4 copies from them and never
writes to a parameter at forward time.

The fused HALO-Q + in-switch copy kernel runs one CTA per auxiliary SM,
and the routed-input quantization and DeepSeek-V4's fused shared-expert
kernel leave those SMs free. The default drops from 8 to 4 on Blackwell
and Rubin alike, so those kernels keep four more SMs. The allowed range
stays 1 to 8, and the serve-config schema snapshots carry the new
default.

…d launch

The fused HALO-Q + in-switch copy kernel is the only scheduler launch, so
the standalone scheduler path is dead code. Removed:
- halo_q_scheduler_kernel, invokeMoeRebalanceHaloQ, and the
moe_rebalance_halo_q op with its fake registration.
- The scheduler body's plan-channel publication and PDL trigger, which
only that kernel used, and their arguments (plan channel pointer, plan
ABI version and words, route features, enable_pdl) in
  MoeRebalanceHaloQParams and moe_rebalance_tma_submit_fused.
- CudaPhysicalSlotScheduler's stage/launch/submit/run path and its plan
channel binding. bind_gpu_direct and fused_submit_args remain.
- The scheduler group's one-time standalone launch at construction. A
barrier still keeps every rank's exchange buffer mapped before any rank
can launch the fused kernel, and fused launches during warmup and
autotuning already use the warmup spin bound.

…t to the load balancer

Per-layer dynamic EPLB now lives in fused_moe/per_layer_dynamic_eplb/,
next to moe_load_balancer.py, instead of one module beside it and two
modules inside the MegaMoE backend package:
- manager.py: PerLayerDynamicMoeLoadBalancer, the model-level owner.
- layer.py: PerLayerDynamicMoeLayerLoadBalancer, the per-layer handle.
- arena.py: the live-weight arena, moved from
  mega_moe/rebalance_live_arena.py.
- planner.py: the HALO-Q and TMA submission, moved from
  mega_moe/rebalance_slot_scheduler.py.

The import path of the two classes is unchanged. moe_load_balancer.py
stays the only entry point, so fused_moe/__init__.py no longer
re-exports them. Tests follow the new module paths. No behavior change.

…ad-balancer seams

Per-layer dynamic EPLB now runs its whole lifecycle through the seams
standard EPLB already uses, instead of extra scheduler and executor
hooks:
- Route: FusedCommMoEScheduler calls _load_balancer_route once per
chunk, on the same line as before. The planner consumes the logical
routes that the layer-wise calibrator records or replays, so in that
mode they are recorded before the route call; standard EPLB and
EPLB-off still record the slots after it.
- Release: the post-run_moe start_set_cpu_stage hook releases the
chunk's replica plan on every chunk, while standard EPLB keeps its
last-call gate. The scheduler's try/except around quantize and
  run_moe is gone.
- Rollback: MoeLoadBalancerIterContext calls the new
BaseMoeLoadBalancer.abort_iter when the forward raises. It defaults to
end_iter, so standard EPLB is unchanged. The per-layer dynamic manager
releases every pending plan, adds cleanup failures to the forward's
error as notes (Python 3.10 has no add_note), and reports itself
unsafe for collective shutdown while a plan is still pending.
- Warmup: the planner binds the one MAIN execution stream rather than a
CPU thread. Warmup and serving submit on that stream from different
threads, so the warmup owner hand-off and the PyExecutor hooks that
  drove it are removed.

The per-chunk CUDA work and its order are unchanged.

… CuteDSL backend

The MegaMoE CuteDSL backend no longer reads the load-balancer
configuration or holds per-layer dynamic EPLB state. It keeps only what
it needs to consume a replica plan:
- the supports_per_layer_dynamic_eplb capability bit;
- compute_slot_count: H plus the helper slots of the per-layer dynamic
EPLB layer handle (H without one), used only by the live planes, the
  symmetric workspace and the launch geometry;
- quantize_input(reserved_sms=...), which the scheduler fills from the
replica plan, plus the plan's launch arguments and route wait.
Its create_weights and cache_derived_state match main again. The DWDP
check is dropped as well, since MoE initialization already rejects any
load balancer under DWDP.

The quant method owns the seven live planes from its plane spec. Its
create_weights allocates the arena through the layer handle before it
registers any Parameter and binds the planes to it at the end; its
cache_derived_state checks the planes and has the handle build its
HALO-Q/TMA producer. The handle keeps the arena, so allocate_arena is
idempotent, bind_backend works from that arena, and live_weight_arena
moves from the backend to the handle.

The developer guide now describes the package, the lifecycle seams and
this split. The per-chunk CUDA work is unchanged.

…ic EPLB contract tests

Main now applies the engine's warmup effects in warmup_scope() through
_set_warmup_effects(), and PyExecutor releases each engine's graphs through
release_executor_resources(). The warmup contract test drives the scope and
checks both transitions; the shutdown-retry test's fake engine implements the
release method the executor now calls.
