Summary

  • Root cause: The 26.09 image's TORCH_ALLOW_TF32_CUBLAS_OVERRIDE=1 made the test stub's fp32 matmuls run as TF32 on B200, adding about 1e-3 error and pushing rank 3 over the 1e-3 tolerance.
  • Fix: Turn TF32 off (allow_tf32=False) around the stub's attention math with a context manager that restores the setting afterwards, keep the tolerances, reference and coverage unchanged, and remove this bug's waiver.
  • Original test: bash .repair-bot/reproduce/6890768-7179c5b01b9d-1791646041444800894/tot/handoff/driver.sh
  • Automated fix generated by repair-bot

Test plan

  • Verify fix on the same GPU type as the original failure
  • Check for regressions in related tests

Reproduction comparison

  • Failed commit: skipped_on_failed_commit
Not run: the NVBug report states the failure ToT reproduced (AssertionError: : Attention2D cross-attention output differs from standard attention)
  • ToT: repro_on_tot at 7179c5b
Signature: AssertionError: : Attention2D cross-attention output differs from standard attention
  • Signature relation: same (NVBug report vs. ToT signature; failed leg not run)

Dev Engineer Review

The test-only attention reference now disables torch.backends.cuda.matmul.allow_tf32 during score and output matmuls, then restores its prior value in a finally block. The change also removes the test_attn2d_cross_attention waiver. No review findings or test results were supplied.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/multi_gpu/test_attn2d_attention.py was modified. Its existing coverage includes cross-attention, GQA, masking, replicated K/V lengths, and distributed mesh layouts; the cross-attention assertion compares Attention2D output with standard attention at rtol=1e-3 and atol=1e-3. The test is listed in test-db/l0_cpu.yml and test-db/l0_dgx_b200.yml; no manual-QA listing was found. waives.txt no longer excludes test_attn2d_cross_attention. Coverage verdict: sufficient. Test execution status is unavailable.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/multi_gpu/test_attn2d_attention.py: The test reference disables TF32 only during its manual FP32 attention calculations and restores the previous setting. Verify cross-attention and the other existing reference comparisons under a TF32-enabled environment; the test is listed in the CPU and DGX B200 CI lists.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt: Removes the test_attn2d_cross_attention waiver, allowing the test to run without that exclusion.

Walkthrough

The cross-attention test is removed from the waiver list. Its reference calculation disables CUDA matmul TF32 during attention computation and restores the prior setting afterward.

Attention test precision

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reference calculation and waiver
tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/multi_gpu/test_attn2d_attention.py, tests/integration/test_lists/waives.txt
The test adds a context manager that disables CUDA matmul TF32 and restores its previous setting. forward_with_lse performs attention calculations in that context. The cross-attention test waiver entry is removed.

Explanation

The title identifies NVBug 6890768, uses the valid [fix] type, and clearly describes disabling TF32 around the attention math. The trailing ellipsis makes the sentence incomplete, but the main change remains clear.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the root cause, fix, affected environment, reproduction result, test plan, and bug link. It does not include the template's explicit PR Checklist section, but the required technical information is mostly complete.

…ttention in IEEE precision

NGC PyTorch images set TORCH_ALLOW_TF32_CUBLAS_OVERRIDE=1, so the test-only
_LSEVanillaAttention stub ran its fp32 matmuls as TF32 on B200 and put ~1e-3
error into each partial output/LSE, tripping the 1e-3 tolerance on one rank of
test_attn2d_cross_attention. Disable TF32 around the stub's manual attention so
it is exact fp32 again; tolerances, reference and coverage are unchanged.
Remove the corresponding waiver.
