Description

Problem

The model and its KV cache manager decide which layers are sparse in two different ways:

  • MiniMaxM3DecoderLayer (tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_minimaxm3.py) reads the split from the
checkpoint: get_sparse_layer_ids() marks layer i as sparse when
    text_config.sparse_attention_config["sparse_attention_freq"][i] != 0.
  • MiniMaxM3KVCacheManagerV2.__init__
    (tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/minimax_m3/cache_manager.py:313-317 on main) ignores the
config. When the caller passes no sparse_layer_ids, which is what the executor does
(_create_kv_cache_manager in pyexecutor/_util.py never passes them), it falls back to
list(range(3, num_target_layers)), which hard-codes three dense leading layers.

The two agree only when sparse_attention_freq is exactly [0, 0, 0, 1, ..., 1]. Any other split breaks the
cache layout:

  • A sparse layer below index 3 has no index-K cache. get_index_k_buffer(layer) returns None, so the
sparse attention backend gets no index-K cache to write to or score against.
  • A dense layer at index 3 or above is laid out as a sparse layer. From reading the code: it gets an
unused index-K page, it gets NVFP4 K/V when the KV cache is NVFP4, and on the Triton path it gets no
native attention-op pool. The dense attention path expects none of these.

Fix

  • get_sparse_layer_ids() moves from modeling_minimaxm3.py to the backend-neutral
minimax_m3/common.py. The model imports it from there, so modeling_minimaxm3.get_sparse_layer_ids
still resolves. The function body is unchanged, and the cache manager can use it without importing the
    model module.
  • A new default_sparse_layer_ids(pretrained_config, num_target_layers) in cache_manager.py builds the
    manager's default:
    • If pretrained_config.num_hidden_layers equals the manager's target layer count, it returns the
sparse ids from get_sparse_layer_ids(). This is exactly the split the model uses.
    • Otherwise (no config, or a manager that does not hold the target decoder layers, such as a separate
draft manager), it keeps the old range(3, num_target_layers) fallback.
  • MiniMaxM3KVCacheManagerV2.__init__ reads pretrained_config from its kwargs. It already reads
sparse_attention_config and num_layers that way, and the executor already passes
pretrained_config=config on the path that builds this manager. It then uses the new helper when sparse_layer_ids
    is not given.

Things that stay the same:

  • An explicit sparse_layer_ids still wins.
  • disable_index_value_layer_ids still defaults to the sparse layers.
  • The dense-native layer set on the Triton path, NVFP4 placement and index-K registration already
follow self.sparse_layer_ids, so they now follow the config too.
  • For checkpoints with three dense leading layers, the resolved ids are identical to before.

Test Coverage

New tests in tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_minimax_m3_shared_draft_layers.py. Both use
small synthetic configs and need no GPU:

  • test_default_sparse_layers_follow_the_text_config covers:

    • an interleaved split ([1, 0, 1, 1, 0] → [0, 2, 3])
    • the three-dense-leading-layers split (unchanged → [3, 4])
    • the fallbacks: no config, a config that does not span the manager's layers, no layer count
  • test_index_k_cache_follows_the_config_sparse_layers[msa|triton] builds the manager with a stubbed
base __init__, pretrained_config with the interleaved split, and one shared Eagle3 layer. It
    checks that:

    • exactly the config's sparse layers get an index-K view, including those below index 3
    • dense layers and the draft layer get none
    • on the Triton path, the dense target layers are the native-attention layers
  • test_default_sparse_layers_log_a_fallback_that_ignores_the_config (review follow-up): when a manager's target layer
count differs from the config's num_hidden_layers and the config's own split is not the default, the fallback
logs one info line; the default split, a matching count and no config log nothing.

The existing test_get_sparse_layer_ids_* tests in tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3.py still
import the helper through modeling_minimaxm3 and cover the moved function.

Test plan / status

  • ruff check and ruff format --check (v0.9.4, repo config) on the four changed files: clean.
codespell and scripts/check_pinned_memory_usage.py: clean. python -m py_compile: OK.

  • The new tests were run on a machine without CUDA, so tensorrt_llm (compiled bindings, real
KVCacheManagerV2) could not be imported. Instead, the changed cache_manager.py, common.py and
params.py were loaded with the bindings and the base manager stubbed out. Tests run:

    • the two new tests (three cases)
    • the existing test_draft_layout_locates_the_appended_tail and
      test_shared_draft_layer_count_follows_the_base_manager
    • the four test_get_sparse_layer_ids_* cases

Result: 9 passed. Against main's cache_manager.py, the constructor test fails with
    assert [3, 4] == [0, 2, 3], which reproduces the bug.

  • Not run: the real pytest invocation in a TensorRT-LLM build environment. Please run it in CI:
    pytest tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_minimax_m3_shared_draft_layers.py
    pytest tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3.py -k sparse_layer_ids
    pytest tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_msa_backend.py tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_minimax_m3_kv_transfer.py
(the last two construct the manager with explicit or absent ids and should be unaffected).

  • Not run: GPU end-to-end serving with a MiniMax-M3 checkpoint.

PR Checklist

  • PR description explains what and why.
  • Follows the coding guidelines; no API, config-schema or dependency changes.
  • Test cases added for the new code path.

Dev Engineer Review

  • default_sparse_layer_ids() derives sparse layers from the model config when its layer count matches the target layer count. Otherwise, it uses the legacy range(3, num_target_layers) fallback and logs when a non-default config split is ignored.
  • Explicit sparse_layer_ids take precedence. The manager uses the resolved IDs for index-K registration, NVFP4 placement, and Triton dense-native layer selection.
  • get_sparse_layer_ids() moved to minimax_m3/common.py. modeling_minimaxm3.py imports it from that shared module.
  • The author reports nine passing stubbed tests and clean static checks. Full pytest runs and GPU end-to-end serving were not run. Review finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_minimax_m3_shared_draft_layers.py. Added tests cover config-derived defaults, fallback logging, and config-driven index-K behavior for MSA and Triton.
  • The tests cover matching and mismatched layer counts, absent config, index-K access, and Triton dense-native layers. They stub base-manager initialization and index-K access, so real allocation and executor wiring remain unverified.
  • No test-db/ CI-list or qa/ manual-QA-list references were found for the test file.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The requested real pytest suites and GPU serving validation were not run.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/minimax_m3/cache_manager.py: Verify config-derived defaults, explicit-ID precedence, mismatch logging, fallback behavior, and downstream cache placement.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/minimax_m3/common.py: Verify sparse and dense classification for absent, disabled, and configured sparse-attention settings, including invalid frequency lengths.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_minimaxm3.py: Verify that existing model callers continue to use the shared get_sparse_layer_ids() implementation.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_minimax_m3_shared_draft_layers.py: Tests layer selection, fallback logging, and index-K behavior for MSA and Triton. No test-list registration was found.

MiniMaxM3KVCacheManagerV2 allocated index-K caches for layers 3..N-1
whenever the caller passed no sparse_layer_ids, while the model selects
sparse attention per layer from
sparse_attention_config.sparse_attention_freq. For a config whose sparse
layers differ from that fixed split, a sparse layer found no index-K
cache (get_index_k_buffer() returned None) and dense layers were laid
out as sparse ones.

Build the default from the pretrained_config keyword the executor
already passes to the manager, with the same get_sparse_layer_ids() the
model uses; the helper moves to minimax_m3/common.py so the cache
manager does not import the model module. The fixed split stays the
fallback when no config spanning the target layers is given, so configs
that match it see no change.

Test the disabled-sparse configuration.

When use_sparse_attention is false, this branch must return no sparse layers. The new tests do not exercise that case. A regression to the legacy fallback could assign index-K buffers to dense layers. Add a case with a matching five-layer configuration, use_sparse_attention=False, and nonzero frequency entries. Assert that default_sparse_layer_ids returns []. 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Verify index-K buffer registration, not only the mocked view.

These mocks bypass _build_base_config and return an index-K tensor without a registered Role.INDEX_KEY buffer. The test can pass if sparse layers have no index-K buffer configuration, which would break real cache initialization. Also assert that _extra_buffers_per_layer registers Role.INDEX_KEY for layers 0, 2, and 3, but not the dense or draft layers. As per path instructions, flag “mocks that bypass the behavior purportedly under test.”

PR effort4 points — Review requires checking config-driven selection, layer-count fallback, explicit override precedence and shared-draft exclusion across both backend selections. The implementation is compact, but its cache-layout consequences require more reasoning than a mechanical helper extraction.
ImportanceImportant — Sensitive cache correctness change: constructor defaults now follow configured sparse layers, also changing default index-V suppression. Added assertions demonstrate index-K availability for early sparse layers and corresponding dense native-layer selection.

LGTM! Added an optional nit, but looks good otherwise!

Nit (non-blocking): this fallback is silent. Falling back is correct for a separate draft manager, and the new test relies on that (_text_config([1, 0, 1, 1, 0]) with 6 layers -> [3, 4, 5]), so an assert would be wrong here. But if a target manager is ever built with a num_layers that differs from num_hidden_layers, for example through an explicit num_layers or layer_mask in _create_kv_cache_manager, a checkpoint whose split isn't the default would quietly get the legacy range(3, N) layout again. Could we log at debug/info when a config is present but its count doesn't match and get_sparse_layer_ids(pretrained_config)[1] differs from the legacy split? That would make this case visible without changing behaviour.

Thanks, done in 236f2ba: when a config is present but its num_hidden_layers differs from the manager's target layer count and the config's own split is not the default, default_sparse_layer_ids now logs one info line before falling back to range(3, N). Behaviour is unchanged; test_default_sparse_layers_log_a_fallback_that_ignores_the_config covers it.

…g split

Review follow-up. When a manager's target layer count differs from the
model config's num_hidden_layers, default_sparse_layer_ids keeps the
range(3, N) fallback. That is right for a separate draft manager, but if a
target manager is ever built with a different layer count, a checkpoint
with a non-default split would quietly get the legacy layout. Log one info
line in that case, when the config's own split is not the default.
