[None][fix] MiniMax-M3 VL: forward video metadata so videos get timestamps - #20695
MiniMaxM3VLInputProcessor.call_with_text_prompt (tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_minimaxm3_vl.py) keeps only VideoData.frames (through _video_frames) and drops VideoData.metadata. When it knows a video's fps and frames_indices, the HF MiniMax processor writes a ]<]{t} seconds[>[ timestamp before each temporal group. Without
the metadata it falls back to fps=None, so videos never get these timestamps, and the model cannot place events in
time. TRT-LLM's video loader already fills VideoData.metadata (total_num_frames, fps, duration, frames_indices; inputs/media_io.py).
This PR was rebased after #20626, which fixed the float-media double rescale in the same function. That half of the
original PR is gone; only the metadata part remains, as discussed with @pranav-nvidia.
Fix
A new _video_metadata(video, num_frames) builds one dict per video with only the keys transformers' VideoMetadata and its video_metadata validator accept: total_num_frames, fps, duration and frames_indices. total_num_frames is the number of frames delivered, because the media loader has already
sampled them (Qwen3-VL and GLM do the same).
A video without usable timing (no metadata, fps missing or not positive, frames_indices missing or empty) gets fps=None and frames_indices=range(n). The processor then writes no timestamps for it, and it never divides by a
zero fps or indexes an empty frames_indices.
call_with_text_prompt passes the list as videos_kwargs["video_metadata"] only when some video in the request
has timing. Requests without timing reach the processor exactly as before ({"do_resize": True, ...}), so the
existing kwargs tests are unchanged.
Timestamps are plain text tokens placed between the per-group vision blocks, so the multimodal placeholder tokens
are unchanged.
Out of scope: the token-ID fast path (supports_token_id_mm_expansion, from #20626) still expands a video as
adjacent brackets without timestamps, so a timed video renders differently through the text-prompt path (with
timestamps) and the token-ID path (without). @pranav-nvidia offered to take that follow-up.
Test Coverage
New CPU-only tests in tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3_vl.py, marked @pytest.mark.cpu_only (the file
is already listed in l0_cpu.yml), using the file's _tokenizer_only_processor and _MediaRecordingProcessor:
test_video_timing_is_forwarded_to_the_processor: the exact video_metadata dict reaches the processor, a second
video without timing in the same request gets fps=None, and transformers' VideoMetadata(**metadata).timestamps
accepts it.
test_video_without_timing_passes_no_metadata, with 5 cases (frame list, no metadata, zero fps, no frame
indices, empty frame indices): the processor kwargs stay {"videos_kwargs": {"do_resize": True}}.
What was run
The new tests and the neighbouring input-processor tests (11 tests: the 6 new cases plus test_text_request_needs_no_hf_processor, test_video_request_lets_the_processor_resize_frames, test_float_tensor_media_turn_off_the_processor_rescale, test_float_media_outside_the_pt_contract_is_rejected, test_mixed_format_media_fall_back_to_uint8): all pass with torch 2.14 CPU and transformers 5.5.4, the version in requirements.txt. tensorrt_llm cannot be built on the development machine, so the module under test was the
real modeling_minimaxm3_vl.py, and the test file's other heavy imports, plus the processor's lazy imports
(inputs.registry base classes, model_config.hf_remote_code_lock, logger), were stubbed.
Against unmodified main: test_video_timing_is_forwarded_to_the_processor fails, and the 5 no-timing cases
pass. The no-timing cases guard today's behaviour.
With the real HF processor classes: the patched call_with_text_prompt drove the public MiniMax-M3 remote-code MiniMaxVLProcessor (processor files byte-identical to MiniMaxAI/MiniMax-M3-MXFP8) with the real tokenizer on
4 random 224x336 frames.
With fps=10 and frames_indices=[0, 13, 26, 39], it writes ]<]0.0 seconds[>[ and ]<]2.6 seconds[>[ before
the two temporal groups (+16 prompt tokens).
Without timing it writes none.
The grid ([[2, 16, 24]]) and the pixels are identical in both cases, also when the frames arrive as float [0, 1] tensors (main's rescale handling).
Lint: ruff check and ruff format --check at the pre-commit pin v0.9.4, codespell and git diff --check
are clean.
Not run: the full test module in the TRT-LLM CI container, and end-to-end GPU inference with a MiniMax-M3
checkpoint.
MiniMaxM3VLInputProcessor forwards video timing metadata when at least one video has usable FPS and frame indices. It uses the delivered frame count and passes only fields accepted by the processor. Videos without usable timing receive fps=None and sequential frame indices.
_prepare_media also sets do_rescale=False for float media, preventing a second rescale. Mixed float and uint8 rejection is part of the stated objective, but the supplied source excerpts do not confirm its implementation. Current review finding counts are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3_vl.py adds test_video_timing_is_forwarded_to_the_processor and parameterized test_video_without_timing_passes_no_metadata, with IDs for frame lists, missing metadata, zero FPS, and missing or empty frame indices. The tests cover metadata forwarding, mixed timed and untimed videos, and expected timestamps. The file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Test execution results are unavailable. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the video metadata behavior.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_minimaxm3_vl.py: Verify that float media bypasses processor rescaling and that video metadata produces timestamps only when timing is usable. Also verify the stated mixed-format rejection behavior.
tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3_vl.py: Tests cover timed and untimed video metadata and expected timestamps. The test file is listed in the CPU CI test list.
The input processor now derives video timing metadata for delivered frames and passes it to the HF processor when at least one video has usable FPS. CPU tests cover timed and untimed inputs.

Summary
Build and pass video timing metadata tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_minimaxm3_vl.py, tests/unittest/_torch/models/test_minimax_m3_vl.py
The processor derives frame indices, FPS, delivered frame count, and source duration. It passes metadata when at least one video has usable FPS. Tests cover timed metadata and cases where metadata is omitted.
Timed videos can lose timestamps when supplied with prompt token IDs, while some invalid metadata can produce incorrect timing or fail a request. Resolve the token-ID behavior and metadata checks before merging.

Guard fps and frames_indices types before comparing and measuring.
The check fps <= 0 raises TypeError if fps is a non-numeric value such as a string. len(frames_indices) raises TypeError if frames_indices is a numpy scalar or other non-sized value. VideoData only validates that metadata is a dict, so the values stay unchecked. The loader normally supplies numbers and lists. A malformed value fails the whole request instead of falling back to no timestamps. This conflicts with the stated goal to omit timestamps safely when timing is invalid.
Consider wrapping the validation in a small helper that returns the fallback on TypeError or ValueError.

…tamps
call_with_text_prompt kept only VideoData.frames and dropped
VideoData.metadata, so the HF MiniMax processor never knew a video's fps or
sampled frame indices and wrote no "]<]{t} seconds[>[" timestamp before its
temporal groups. The model could not place events in time.
Pass each video's timing as videos_kwargs["video_metadata"] (only the keys
transformers' VideoMetadata accepts; total_num_frames = frames delivered),
and only when some video in the request has timing. A video without usable
timing gets fps=None and no timestamps, as before. The float-media rescale
is handled by NVIDIA#20626 and is unchanged here. The token-ID fast path still
expands videos without timestamps.

Exercise the real processor when checking timestamp tokens.
_MediaRecordingProcessor inherits _ValidImageProcessor, which returns fixed IDs based only on the number of videos. VideoMetadata(**expected).timestamps computes timestamps independently, so the timed and untimed tests cannot detect missing or misplaced timestamp tokens. Keep the kwargs assertions as handoff coverage and add a focused real-processor test for both cases.

Reject non-finite FPS before forwarding timing.
If metadata["fps"] is float("nan") or float("inf"), the fps <= 0 check does not select the no-timing fallback. The processor then receives non-finite FPS and can produce nan or inf timestamp text. Require a finite, positive FPS before using the frame indices. Add NaN and infinity cases to test_video_without_timing_passes_no_metadata.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Require one timing index per delivered video frame.
VideoData does not check that frames_indices has one entry per delivered frame. When the list is shorter, the MiniMax processor clamps its lookup to the last entry. Later temporal groups then reuse the final timestamp. Checking the length against num_frames and using the existing no-timing fallback on mismatch prevents this repetition. The check does not validate index order.

Preserve video timing on the token-ID path.
When a request supplies timed video with prompt_token_ids, expand_prompt_token_ids_for_mm builds vision blocks but adds no timestamp text. This change adds timestamps only through call_with_text_prompt, so the supported token-ID path still loses the video’s temporal positions. Add equivalent timestamp insertion to that path, with the required token-count handling, and test a timed video through the token-ID entrypoint.
