Dev Engineer Review

  • TriAttentionCompressionManager._load_calibration now loads calibration files with weights_only=True. Verify that supported calibration files remain compatible.
  • Profiling uses TLLM_TORCH_PROFILER_DIR when set and a temporary directory otherwise. apply_start_config also uses a temporary-directory fallback instead of /tmp.
  • _publish_bound_address creates the report file’s parent directory and uses it for the temporary file. The coordinator uses a temporary directory for its Unix socket, checks the socket path length, and cleans up the directory during shutdown.
  • Profiling documentation now describes the temporary-directory fallback.

QA Engineer Review

No test changes.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/kv_cache_compression/triattention/triattention.py: Verify that supported calibration files load with weights_only=True.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/profiling.py: Verify configured-directory selection, temporary-directory fallback, and error handling when a directory cannot be created.
  • tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py: Verify report-file creation when its parent directory does not exist, socket-path length handling, and temporary-directory cleanup after coordinator shutdown.
  • tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm.py: Verify that the profiling fallback documentation matches the implementation.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_protocol.py: Verify that the output_dir fallback documentation matches the implementation.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py: Verify that the profiling fallback documentation matches the implementation.

Description

Also switches to weights_only=True in triattention.py.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change enables weights-only loading for calibration files, updates profiling output directory defaults, and changes serving path handling for bound-address reports and the implicit coordinator’s Unix-domain socket.

Changes

Calibration loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Weights-only calibration loading
tensorrt_llm/_torch/kv_cache_compression/triattention/triattention.py
_load_calibration now calls torch.load with weights_only=True. The accepted calibration layouts and later validation logic are unchanged.

Profiling output directories

Layer / File(s) Summary
Profiling directory fallback
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/profiling.py, tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_protocol.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py
When no output directory is supplied, profiling uses TLLM_TORCH_PROFILER_DIR if set, or creates a temporary directory. If directory creation fails, profiling raises RequestError with the relevant target and underlying error. The API descriptions now state the temporary-directory fallback.

Serving path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound-address report path
tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py
_publish_bound_address creates the report directory and temporary file in the absolute report path’s parent.
Coordinator socket directory lifecycle
tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py
When UDS is enabled, the implicit coordinator places its socket in a temporary directory. It raises ValueError if the encoded socket path exceeds 107 bytes and removes the directory during cleanup.

Add a regression test for the weights-only contract.

The existing flat and official fixtures contain only tensors and primitive containers. They would also pass if this call reverted to weights_only=False. Add a test in tests/unittest/_torch/kv_cache_compression/test_triattention_pipeline.py that saves a calibration payload containing an unsupported custom object and verifies that _load_calibration() rejects it. Keep the existing valid-layout tests.

Add coverage for per-instance coordinator socket isolation.

The current test only mocks _serve_coordinator_and_fleet; it does not create coordinator instances or inspect socket paths. Add a focused regression test that starts two implicit coordinators, asserts distinct socket paths, and confirms that both temporary directories are removed after shutdown.

Add a regression test for the default trace directory.

No profiling test calls apply_start_config() with a falsey output_dir and checks the generated trtllm-profile- directory. Add a manager-level test that applies such a config and asserts that the trace path uses an existing directory with that prefix.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Own the fallback directory and clean it at the end of its lifecycle.

apply_start_config() stores only the string returned by tempfile.mkdtemp(). The scheduled-stop and early-exit export paths never remove that directory. Each accepted start_profile() can therefore leave a per-rank directory and trace file in the system temporary directory. Repeated profiles can consume local temporary storage.

Retain a TemporaryDirectory handle for each fallback directory and clean it when the profile manager shuts down, after any trace consumer has finished. Do not clean it immediately after export because stop_profile() allows callers to read the exported trace after it returns.
