[None][fix] Keep target page size for standalone DSpark/DFlash draft KV pool when drafter kernels accept it - #21046
A standalone drafter (DFlash, standalone DSpark) gets its own KV pool. Since #19960 the pool always uses 32-token pages,
whatever the target's kv_cache_config.tokens_per_block. This PR keeps the target's page size when every drafter
block-decode kernel accepts it (32 or 64) and falls back to 32 otherwise, exactly as today. FP4 MLA targets, which
force 128-token pages, still get a 32-token draft pool. MTP and Eagle3 draft pools are unchanged: they keep the target's
page size.

Only 64-page targets change. Their draft pool goes back to the page size it had before #19960.
Root cause
e88d19c ("Kimi K3 optimizations on Rubin", #19960) added _STANDALONE_DRAFT_TOKENS_PER_BLOCK = 32 to tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py. KvCacheCreator._get_draft_tokens_per_block returns it for every DFlash and
DSpark drafter. The intent was to keep the draft pool off page sizes the drafter kernels reject: FP4 MLA forces 128,
which the trtllm-gen MLA decode does not take.
That also moved 64-page targets to 32-token draft pages. The Kimi K3 target (modeling_v2, tp16_moetp4ep4 on GB200)
requires tokens_per_block 64. Its DSpark drafter's decode kernels (k3_drafter_attn_qknorm and the drafter GEMV and
all-reduce sites) take 64-token pages only, so with a 32-token pool every drafter block runs the stock forward inside
the decode CUDA graph.
A rank-0 nsys of BS1 forced-AL6 decode, 132 generation-only iterations, shows:
So each step gains 306 µs of GPU work. Most of it is the stock drafter path: stock FMHA, one-shot all-reduces, split-K
GEMMs, append-KV. The target runs the same kernels at the same counts.
The fix ran on the serving stack measured above, the c17300e runtime with the Kimi K3 tree of 36fcafe. There it
binds the drafter pool as 5 x (45440, 2, 1, 64, 64) torch.bfloat16, page_size=64, and the drafter blocks run on k3_drafter_attn_qknorm again.
Why {32, 64}
The set is the page sizes every drafter block-decode kernel that reads the pool accepts:
private arena with its own page size; the pool's page size is not read
The intersection is {32, 64}. 128 (FP4 MLA) and every other value keep the 32 fallback.
Performance
Kimi K3 MXFP4, TP16 attention with MoE TP4 x EP4, DSpark with 7 drafts, GB200 (one NVL72 block of 4 nodes). Forced
acceptance length 6 (TLLM_SPEC_DECODE_FORCE_NUM_ACCEPTED_TOKENS=5), ISL/OSL 1024. tok/s = 1000 / median TPOT, median
(min-max) of 5 reps, all arms on one grant:
This PR recovers 257 of the 295 µs per BS1 decode step lost since #19960 (42.8 of 49.2 µs per output token). The other
38 µs per step are not the drafter's. In the profiles above, the target's own K3 kernels take about 50 µs more per step
in the newer stack: k3_moe +20 µs, k3_kda_attn_fused +19 µs, k3_moe_front +9 µs, at unchanged launch counts.
The draft page size does not change them. An earlier 4-node block measured the same pair: 982.0 tok/s with 64-token
draft pages vs 942.2 at head.

Same-text greedy-decodes 24 tokens at a fixed stock-reference prefix, with stream interval 1 and CUDA graphs.
In 21 of 244 samples, head and this PR emit different token streams within those 24 tokens.
Both agree with the stock reference equally: on average 14.96 vs 14.91 tokens before the first difference, and a
full 24-token match in 111 vs 112 samples. Among the 21, this PR matches the reference longer in 3, shorter in 3,
and equally in 15.
That is numeric divergence from a different verify batch shape, not a change in the target's answer.
test_draft_layers_of_the_target_keep_the_target_page_size, MTP and Eagle3 (one-model) at target 64 and 128: the
draft pool keeps the target's page size.
test_cost_charges_the_draft_page_size and test_allocation_uses_the_page_size_the_cost_charged at target 64 (kept)
and 128 (fallback): the budget split charges the page size the pool is allocated with.
Without the _util.py change, the four 64-page cases fail. With it, the whole file passes (112 tests). These were run
on the c17300e runtime with this PR's _util.py hunk applied; the hunk's context is identical there and on main.
Unchanged: a 128-page target keeps getting a 32-token draft pool. This is covered by the DSpark and DFlash [128-32] cases of test_standalone_drafter_keeps_a_target_page_size_its_kernels_accept and by the cost and
allocation tests at 128.
No 128-page DSpark/DFlash configuration could be started on GPU here. Kimi K3 is the only DSpark target on hand. With an
NVFP4 KV cache and tokens_per_block: 128, it stops in model loading before any KV pool is built: validate_fp4_mla_config raises Dense FP4 MLA requires the TRTLLM attention backend; hybrid linear attention is not supported.
Validation notes
The GPU arms do not run this branch's full tree. Kimi K3 needs its modeling_v2 tree, so the arms run head 36fcafe
(the c17300e runtime with the K3 tree of 36fcafe), and the "fix" arms bind-mount the c17300e_util.py with this
PR's one-file change applied. That change is identical to the hunk on main (same context lines).
Dev Engineer Review
Standalone DSpark and DFlash draft pools keep the target page size when it is 32 or 64. They use 32 for other target page sizes. MTP and Eagle3 behavior remains unchanged. The behavior change applies to standalone draft pools when the target uses 64-token pages; 128-token targets still use 32-token draft pages.
The author reports throughput gains on Kimi K3 at batch sizes 1, 2, 4, and 8. Review severity counts are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
TestStandaloneDrafterPageSize covers DSpark and DFlash page-size selection for target sizes 16, 32, 64, and 128. It also checks MTP/Eagle3 behavior and verifies that budget calculations and allocation use the same draft page size. The author reports that all 112 tests in the file passed with the _util.py change applied. Coverage verdict: sufficient for page-size selection and budget/allocation consistency.
The reported GPU validation used a separate runtime/model tree with a bind-mounted version of the implementation change. The 128-page GPU configuration could not be started, and the available Kimi K3 configuration stopped during model loading. Reported CI runs had successful PR_Github jobs, while their associated merge-request pipelines were reported as unstable or failed.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py: Verify that standalone DSpark and DFlash pools retain target page sizes of 32 or 64 and use 32 for other sizes. Verify that MTP and Eagle3 continue to use the target page size.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_budget_split.py: Tests cover supported and fallback page sizes, MTP/Eagle3 behavior, and agreement between budget cost and allocation. This unit test does not require integration test-list registration.
…KV pool when drafter kernels accept it
A standalone drafter's separate KV pool keeps the target's tokens_per_block
when every drafter block-decode kernel accepts it (32 or 64) and falls back to
32 otherwise, as before. 128-page targets (FP4 MLA) still get 32-token draft
pages; MTP and Eagle3 draft pools keep the target's page size, unchanged.

Standalone DFlash and DSpark draft pools retain target page sizes of 32 or 64. Other target sizes use the standalone-draft default. MTP and Eagle3 draft layers continue to use the target page size. Tests cover selection, cost estimation, and allocation.

Exercise the changed 64-token path in an end-to-end GPU test.
The existing DFlash/DSpark accuracy tests cover draft execution and verification, but they do not configure a target with tokens_per_block=64. The DSpark test uses 128 and therefore exercises the fallback to 32. Extend one of these hardware-gated tests, or add a focused variant, with a 64-token target page size and assert a completed draft-and-verify step. This is the missing coverage for the changed standalone pool geometry.

Extend an existing hardware-gated DFlash or DSpark end-to-end accuracy test, or
add a focused variant, to configure the target with tokens_per_block=64 and
assert that a draft-and-verify step completes. Keep the test focused on
exercising the 64-token standalone pool geometry.
The fixture configures both cost and allocation tests with DSparkDecodingConfig, so they do not cover DFlash. DFlash defaults to VANILLA, which disables the separate pool. Add a TRTLLM DFlash case to both tests.
These tests call _get_draft_cache_cost(..., use_separate_draft_kv_cache=True) and _create_one_model_draft_kv_cache_manager(...) directly. They do not invoke the separate-pool decision. Add a focused assertion through should_use_separate_draft_kv_cache or _should_create_separate_draft_kv_cache; otherwise the tests cover DFlash page sizing but not DFlash separate-pool wiring.
Apply the same spec_config parameterization and assignment to test_allocation_uses_the_page_size_the_cost_charged.

test_cost_charges_the_draft_page_sizeandtest_allocation_uses_the_page_size_the_cost_chargedat target 64 (kept)and 128 (fallback): the budget split charges the page size the pool is allocated with.
Without the
_util.pychange, the four 64-page cases fail. With it, the whole file passes (112 tests). These were runon the c17300e runtime with this PR's
_util.pyhunk applied; the hunk's context is identical there and on main. The 128-page case from #19960
Unchanged: a 128-page target keeps getting a 32-token draft pool. This is covered by the DSpark and DFlash
[128-32]cases oftest_standalone_drafter_keeps_a_target_page_size_its_kernels_acceptand by the cost andallocation tests at 128.
No 128-page DSpark/DFlash configuration could be started on GPU here. Kimi K3 is the only DSpark target on hand. With an
NVFP4 KV cache and
tokens_per_block: 128, it stops in model loading before any KV pool is built:validate_fp4_mla_configraisesDense FP4 MLA requires the TRTLLM attention backend; hybrid linear attention is not supported.Validation notes
The GPU arms do not run this branch's full tree. Kimi K3 needs its modeling_v2 tree, so the arms run head 36fcafe
(the c17300e runtime with the K3 tree of 36fcafe), and the "fix" arms bind-mount the c17300e
_util.pywith thisPR's one-file change applied.
TestStandaloneDrafterPageSizecovers DSpark and DFlash page-size selection for target sizes 16, 32, 64, and 128. It also checks MTP/Eagle3 behavior and verifies that budget calculations and allocation use the same draft page size. The author reports that all 112 tests in the file passed with the_util.pychange applied. Reported CI runs had successful
PR_Githubjobs, while their associated merge-request pipelines were reported as unstable or failed.Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py: Verify that standalone DSpark and DFlash pools retain target page sizes of 32 or 64 and use 32 for other sizes. Verify that MTP and Eagle3 continue to use the target page size.tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_budget_split.py: Tests cover supported and fallback page sizes, MTP/Eagle3 behavior, and agreement between budget cost and allocation. This unit test does not require integration test-list registration.
