[None][feat] Add NVFP4_PLUS (E2M1 + UE5M3 per 32) CuteDSL MoE on Rubin - #21242
NVFP4_PLUS keeps the E2M1 values of NVFP4 but stores one UE5M3 block scale per 32 values and has no FP32 per-tensor scale. The SM107 block-scaled MMA (kind::mxf4nvf4) reads UE5M3 scales directly, and UE5M3 spans 2^-17 to 114688, so activation blocks need no global normalization.
MXFP4 checkpoints load as is: the E2M1 payload is unchanged and every E8M0 scale becomes the UE5M3 code of the same power of two (exact for exponents -17..16). Select it with OVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO=NVFP4_PLUS and moe_config.backend=CUTEDSL.
QuantAlgo / QuantMode NVFP4_PLUS, with the C++ QuantMode flag added by name.
UE5M3 helpers: a torch reference, and CuTe DSL f32 <-> UE5M3 conversion that saturates before the round-up cvt.
CuTe DSL activation quantization: amax / 6 rounded up to UE5M3, 128x4 swizzled or row-major scales.
Rubin FC1 gather + activation kernel: sf_vec_size 32 works (SFA gather copy width, SFA transform k-groups, SFA tiler), and the FC2-input scales can be UE5M3.
The Rubin grouped-GEMM runners take sf_dtype; new ops cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_rubin and cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_grouped_gemm_finalize_inplace_rubin.
New MoE implementation trtllm.cutedsl.grouped_gemm.nvfp4_plus (SM107, SwiGLU, EPLB).
NVFP4 EPLB: size the host-staged alphas by the staged experts and default them to 1, so a checkpoint without weight_scale_2 works.
Tests for the format helpers, the quantize kernel and GEMM, model config, and the MoE impl / backend / module matrices.
Dev Engineer Review
NVFP4_PLUS adds E2M1 quantization with UE5M3 scales per 32 values for Rubin SM107 CuteDSL MoE. It adds reference and kernel quantization, scale conversion, grouped-GEMM operations, MXFP4 checkpoint scale conversion, and backend selection.
The implementation restricts the MoE path to supported shapes and bias-free SwiGLU. It rejects checkpoints containing input_scale, weight_scale_2, or pre_quant_scale, and rejects incompatible explicit backends and checkpoint metadata. The shared Rubin runners and FP4 scale-shape helper also change; verify their defaults preserve existing NVFP4 behavior. The FC1 gather path requires aligned K tiles, and the NVFP4_PLUS path rejects hidden sizes not divisible by 512.
No current review findings or severity counts were supplied. Test execution results are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
Tests cover UE5M3 conversion, NVFP4_PLUS quantization, backend eligibility and selection, implementation resolution, checkpoint configuration, and a DeepSeek-V4-Flash accuracy case. The CPU format test and mode test are listed in l0_cpu. The Rubin quantization test and two NVFP4_PLUS MoE cases are listed in l0_gr100. The accuracy case is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt.
Coverage is needs follow-up. The supplied test summary does not identify direct NVFP4_PLUS tests for the new grouped-GEMM kernels or all checkpoint scale-loading paths. No test run result was supplied.

Description
NVFP4_PLUS runs the routed experts of an MXFP4 checkpoint with FP4 activations on Rubin (SM107). It keeps the E2M1 values of NVFP4 but stores one UE5M3 block scale per 32 values and has no FP32 per-tensor scale. The SM107 block-scaled MMA (kind::mxf4nvf4) reads UE5M3 scales directly, and UE5M3 spans 2^-17 to 114688, so activation blocks need no global normalization.
MXFP4 checkpoints load as they are: the E2M1 weights are unchanged, and every E8M0 scale becomes the UE5M3 code of the same power of two, which is exact from 2^-17 to 2^16. Such a checkpoint runs today as W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 with FP8 activations; NVFP4_PLUS quantizes the activations to FP4 as well.
moe_config:
backend: CUTEDSL # AUTO selects CUTEDSL under this override
NVFP4_PLUS supports bias-free SwiGLU experts, such as the DeepSeek-V4 routed experts. It needs hidden_size to be a multiple of 512 and the per-rank MoE intermediate size a multiple of 128. Other MoE backends, other shapes, and checkpoints that carry NVFP4 global scales or name NVFP4_PLUS in their own quantization config are rejected with a message that names the fix.
Changes
Format.QuantAlgo.NVFP4_PLUS and QuantMode.NVFP4_PLUS, selected for MXFP4 experts with OVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO. UE5M3 helpers: a torch reference, and CuTe DSL f32 <-> UE5M3 conversions. The f32 -> UE5M3 conversion clamps before the round-up cvt, which does not saturate; the UE5M3 -> f32 decode uses integer bit operations, since the DSL's conversion decodes exponent 31 as inf.
Activation quantization. A CuTe DSL kernel: amax / 6 rounded up to UE5M3, with row-major or 128x4-swizzled scales.
Rubin MoE kernels.
The FC1 gather + SwiGLU kernel works at 32 values per scale (SFA gather, SFA transform K-groups, SFA tiler) and quantizes the FC2 input with UE5M3 scales.
It gathers the activation scales in 16-byte cp.async.cg copies. At 32 values per scale a K tile has 8 scale bytes per row, so each copy takes the aligned pair of K tiles; a copy below 16 bytes would have to allocate in L1 (cp.async.ca), which made FC1 2.2x slower at large token counts.
The FC2 finalize kernel accepts UE5M3 scales per 16 or 32 values.
Ops and runners. New ops cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_rubin and cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_grouped_gemm_finalize_inplace_rubin. The Rubin runners take sf_dtype, which enters their AutoTuner keys only for non-E4M3 scales, so NVFP4 keeps its cache keys.
MoE implementationtrtllm.cutedsl.grouped_gemm.nvfp4_plus (SM107, SwiGLU, EPLB). NVFP4PlusCuteDslFusedMoEMethod converts the E8M0 scales while loading.
Config. Under the override, an AUTO MoE backend resolves to CUTEDSL, and any other explicit backend, including a DSpark draft's speculative_config.moe_backend, is rejected while the config loads.
EPLB. For a checkpoint without global scales, the host-staged alphas are sized by the staged experts and stay 1.

The Rubin quantizer produces packed E2M1 values and UE5M3 scales from BF16 and FP16 inputs. Gather and finalize operations accept UE5M3 scale factors and use the NVFP4_PLUS scale-vector size.
The SM107 implementation runs FC1 with fused SwiGLU and activation quantization, then runs FC2 with routing-scale finalize. Backend resolution, weight-scale conversion, shape eligibility, reference utilities, tests, and documentation include NVFP4_PLUS support.

Explanation
The description is thorough and covers the format, usage, a per-area change list, accuracy and performance tables, and a test coverage table. It follows the template sections (Description, Test Coverage, PR Checklist). The title-format header block is retained from the template, which is acceptable. The checklist is marked as reviewed. The main gap is that the test coverage section lists test names and CI placement, which is adequate, so no critical section is missing.

Add a bias-free, limit-only NVFP4_PLUS execution case.
The non-default SwiGLU matrix cases enable GPT-OSS-style bias and activation parameters, so NVFP4_PLUS eligibility rejects them before run_moe. The default case does not exercise swiglu_limit_scalar=self.act_clamp.
Add one CUTEDSL/NVFP4_PLUS case that constructs ordinary Swiglu with alpha and beta absent, a finite limit such as 7.0, and bias=False. Compare its output with the reference. The existing clamped test covers MegaMoE CuteDSL, not the NVFP4_PLUS leaf.

LGTM.
No blockers from my side; 3 possibly blocking and 8 required items, 7 of them inline below. The intermediate-size alignment point is already in BowenFu's thread, so I did not repeat it. No SM107 hardware was used for this review: kernel-level points come from reading the code and CPU simulation.
Required (R1): PR description and validation. The template's Description and Test Coverage sections are still empty. The CodeRabbit blocks say test outcomes are unavailable, and they describe two parts of the change slightly wrong: the leaf only declares supports_apply_router_weight_on_input, and the EPLB change is to host-staged expert alphas, not shared-expert alphas. No CI has run on this head yet; only the DCO and CodeRabbit checks are present. Please list the tests you ran with their SM107 results, and add an accuracy comparison against the current W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 path on the DeepSeek-V4 MXFP4 checkpoint, plus a performance number for the new path.

The quantizer test calls only sf_swizzled=False, while the default True path uses separate scale indexing and padded storage. A byte-indexing or padding regression can pass. Add a case to tests/unittest/_torch/kernels/parallel/test_nvfp4_plus_quantize_rubin.py for m=7, k=2880; compare the full scale buffer with the row-major reference scales swizzled to the 128×4 layout. Add a test for the default swizzled path of nvfp4_plus_quantize using m=7 and
k=2880, and compare the full scale buffer against the row-major reference scales
converted to the 128×4 layout. Verify the quantized FP4 output as well, so the
test covers padded rows and scale columns.

Require eligibility for the aligned case.
If can_implement rejects the aligned SM107 case for another reason, this assertion still passes. Assert verdict.eligible when rejected is false. The test must detect a regression that makes NVFP4_PLUS unavailable for its supported shape. As per path instructions, “Flag assertions that would pass despite a plausible regression.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Strengthen the aligned SM107 case assertion so it verifies NVFP4_PLUS is
eligible when the case is not rejected; checking only that the rejection reason
is not SHAPE_UNALIGNED can pass for other rejection reasons. Update the
assertion around verdict to require verdict.eligible for the aligned,
non-rejected case.

NVFP4_PLUS keeps the E2M1 values of NVFP4 but stores one UE5M3 block scale
per 32 values and has no FP32 per-tensor scale. The SM107 block-scaled MMA
(kind::mxf4nvf4) reads UE5M3 scales directly, and UE5M3 spans 2^-17 to
114688, so activation blocks need no global normalization.
MXFP4 checkpoints load as is: the E2M1 payload is unchanged and every E8M0
scale becomes the UE5M3 code of the same power of two (exact for exponents
-17..16). Select it with OVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO=NVFP4_PLUS and
moe_config.backend=CUTEDSL.
- QuantAlgo / QuantMode NVFP4_PLUS, with the C++ QuantMode flag added by name.
- UE5M3 helpers: a torch reference, and CuTe DSL f32 <-> UE5M3 conversion that
saturates before the round-up cvt.
- CuTe DSL activation quantization: amax / 6 rounded up to UE5M3, 128x4
swizzled or row-major scales.
- Rubin FC1 gather + activation kernel: sf_vec_size 32 works (SFA gather copy
width, SFA transform k-groups, SFA tiler), and the FC2-input scales can be
UE5M3.
- The Rubin grouped-GEMM runners take sf_dtype; new ops
cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_rubin and
cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_grouped_gemm_finalize_inplace_rubin.
- New MoE implementation trtllm.cutedsl.grouped_gemm.nvfp4_plus (SM107,
SwiGLU, EPLB).
- NVFP4 EPLB: size the host-staged alphas by the staged experts and default
them to 1, so a checkpoint without weight_scale_2 works.
- Tests for the format helpers, the quantize kernel and GEMM, model config,
and the MoE impl / backend / module matrices.

- Add TestDeepSeekV4Flash::test_nvfp4_plus: TP4/EP4 with attention DP on
Rubin (SM107), with the MXFP4 routed experts served as NVFP4_PLUS on the
CuteDSL MoE. OVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO goes through env_overrides so every
worker rank sees it.
- Register its GSM8K reference under extra_acc_spec
moe_quant_algo=NVFP4_PLUS, since the global quant_algo stays
FP8_BLOCK_SCALES. On one 4x Rubin node the test scores 95.45 and
test_auto_dtype (MXFP4 W4A8) 95.75, so the reference stays at 95.11.
- List the test in the QA function list; CI has no 4-GPU GR100 stage.
- Add the DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash MoE shape to the local MoE backend configs.

- Shapes: with one scale per 32 values, the FC2 input has whole 128x4
scale tiles only when intermediate_size_per_partition is a multiple of
128, so the FC1 row check asks NVFP4_PLUS for 256 rows (NVFP4 keeps
128). The FC1 kernel gathers each token's UE5M3 scale row in 8-byte
copies, so the leaf also declines a hidden_size that is not a multiple
of 256. Both are SHAPE_UNALIGNED rejections in can_implement.
- Checkpoints: NVFP4_PLUS serves plain MXFP4 checkpoints. Its loader
rejects input_scale, weight_scale_2 and pre_quant_scale, which its
kernels would drop, and a checkpoint's own quantization config cannot
name NVFP4_PLUS.
- Backend: under OVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO=NVFP4_PLUS an AUTO MoE backend
resolves to CUTEDSL, and any other explicit backend, including a DSpark
draft's speculative_config.moe_backend, is rejected while the config
loads.
- EPLB: only a checkpoint without global scales sizes the host-staged
alphas by the staged experts; NVFP4 sizes them by its weight_scale_2
entries as before.
- The Rubin MoE runners add sf_dtype to their AutoTuner key only for
non-E4M3 scales, so NVFP4 keeps its cache keys.
- Drop the unused C++ QuantMode::nvfp4Plus().
- Type annotations for the new kernels and tests.
- Docs: NVFP4_PLUS usage in quantization.md and the DeepSeek-V4 README.
The MoE guide scopes it to bias-free SwiGLU experts and states the E8M0
range and the shape limits.
- Tests: regression tests for the shape gates and the backend checks.
The NVFP4_PLUS module matrices, the swizzled-scale and GEMM kernel
cases and the reference-helper tests are dropped. The format test runs
in l0_cpu, and the SM107 kernel and backend cases in l0_gr100.

At 32 values per scale, a row of activation scales has 8 bytes per K tile,
and a cp.async below 16 bytes must allocate in L1 (cp.async.ca), which
stalls the FC1 gather. At the DeepSeek-V4-Flash shape with 8192 tokens,
the FC1 kernel took 420 us against 188 us with 16-value scales. The gather
now copies the 16-byte aligned pair of K tiles that holds the current one
with cp.async.cg, and the transform warps read their K tile's half; FC1
takes 179 us at that shape.
The pair copies need 16-byte scale rows, so at 32 values per scale the FC1
kernel requires K to be a multiple of 512, and the NVFP4_PLUS leaf declines
a hidden_size that is not a multiple of 512.
One MoE forward on one GPU (DeepSeek-V4-Flash: 256 experts, top-6, hidden
4096, intermediate 2048) now runs 3-6% faster with NVFP4_PLUS than with
NVFP4 on the same kernels, from 1 to 131072 tokens: 455 us against 469 us
at 8192 tokens (614 us before), and 4877 us against 5137 us at 131072
tokens (7899 us before).

Dev Engineer Review
NVFP4_PLUS adds E2M1 quantization with UE5M3 scales per 32 values for Rubin SM107 CuteDSL MoE. It adds reference and kernel quantization, scale conversion, grouped-GEMM operations, MXFP4 checkpoint scale conversion, and backend selection.
The implementation restricts the MoE path to supported shapes and bias-free SwiGLU. It rejects checkpoints containing
input_scale,weight_scale_2, orpre_quant_scale, and rejects incompatible explicit backends and checkpoint metadata. The shared Rubin runners and FP4 scale-shape helper also change; verify their defaults preserve existing NVFP4 behavior. The FC1 gather path requires aligned K tiles, and the NVFP4_PLUS path rejects hidden sizes not divisible by 512.No current review findings or severity counts were supplied. Test execution results are unavailable.

NVFP4_PLUS runs the routed experts of an MXFP4 checkpoint with FP4 activations on Rubin (SM107). It keeps the E2M1 values of NVFP4 but stores one UE5M3 block scale per 32 values and has no FP32 per-tensor scale. The SM107 block-scaled MMA (
kind::mxf4nvf4) reads UE5M3 scales directly, and UE5M3 spans 2^-17 to 114688, so activation blocks need no global normalization.MXFP4 checkpoints load as they are: the E2M1 weights are unchanged, and every E8M0 scale becomes the UE5M3 code of the same power of two, which is exact from 2^-17 to 2^16. Such a checkpoint runs today as W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8 with FP8 activations; NVFP4_PLUS quantizes the activations to FP4 as well.
Usage
NVFP4_PLUS supports bias-free SwiGLU experts, such as the DeepSeek-V4 routed experts. It needs
hidden_sizeto be a multiple of 512 and the per-rank MoE intermediate size a multiple of 128. Other MoE backends, other shapes, and checkpoints that carry NVFP4 global scales or name NVFP4_PLUS in their own quantization config are rejected with a message that names the fix.Changes
QuantAlgo.NVFP4_PLUSandQuantMode.NVFP4_PLUS, selected for MXFP4 experts withOVERRIDE_QUANT_ALGO. UE5M3 helpers: a torch reference, and CuTe DSL f32 <-> UE5M3 conversions. The f32 -> UE5M3 conversion clamps before the round-upcvt, which does not saturate; the UE5M3 -> f32 decode uses integer bit operations, since the DSL's conversion decodes exponent 31 as inf.cp.async.cgcopies. At 32 values per scale a K tile has 8 scale bytes per row, so each copy takes the aligned pair of K tiles; a copy below 16 bytes would have to allocate in L1 (cp.async.ca), which made FC1 2.2x slower at large token counts.cute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_rubinandcute_dsl_nvfp4_plus_grouped_gemm_finalize_inplace_rubin. The Rubin runners takesf_dtype, which enters their AutoTuner keys only for non-E4M3 scales, so NVFP4 keeps its cache keys.trtllm.cutedsl.grouped_gemm.nvfp4_plus(SM107, SwiGLU, EPLB).NVFP4PlusCuteDslFusedMoEMethodconverts the E8M0 scales while loading.speculative_config.moe_backend, is rejected while the config loads.docs/source/features/quantization.md, the DeepSeek-V4 README, and the MoE developer guide.Accuracy
DeepSeek-V4-Flash (MXFP4 routed experts) on 4 Rubin GPUs, NVFP4_PLUS against the default W4A8_MXFP4_MXFP8:
TestDeepSeekV4Flash)± is the standard error over 5 repeats; GSM8K and RULER-128K are single runs. These were measured on the first commit; the later commits change validation, how the FC1 kernel copies the activation scales and the docs, not the arithmetic. Excluding a grading artifact that hits both runs (
\boxed{907} \pmod{1000}), AIME25 differs by 3 of 150 attempts. MRCR is 2.5 points lower with lenient scoring, at the edge of significance, and 1.0 point lower with strict scoring, within noise.Performance
One MoE forward on one Rubin GPU at the DeepSeek-V4-Flash routed-expert shape (256 experts, top-6, hidden 4096, intermediate 2048, BF16 in and out, CUDA graphs), timed with
tests/microbenchmarks/bench_moe. Both formats run on the CuteDSL MoE.NVFP4_PLUS moves half the scale bytes of NVFP4, and its input quantization is faster (5.8 µs vs. 9.3 µs at 2048 tokens).
