Description

publish-fern-docs.yml triggers on release: types: [published]. release.yml creates chart releases with gh release create under secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN. GitHub does not start workflows from events created by the default GITHUB_TOKEN, so that release event never fires for a bot-created release.

chart/v0.19.0 is the only chart release in this repo's history authored by a real user rather than github-actions[bot], and it's the only one that has ever triggered a successful "Publish Fern Docs" run. Every bot-authored chart release since, chart/v0.19.1 and chart/v0.20.0 included, silently never published, leaving the live docs site two releases stale.

This PR replaces the release trigger with a workflow_run trigger on "Create GitHub Release" (types: [completed]), so publish-fern-docs.yml starts after a chart release run instead of relying on the suppressed event:

  • The job runs only when the release run concluded success and its head_branch starts with chart/v. For a tag-push run head_branch is the tag name (checked against the existing runs, for example chart/v0.20.0). Operator, agent and cli runs are skipped as before.
  • The resolve step takes the tag from workflow_run.head_branch; it is still validated by the existing chart/vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH[-rc.N] pattern and the tag-exists check.
  • workflow_run always runs the default-branch copy of the workflow. A tag push runs release.yml as it exists at the tagged commit, so a step added to release.yml would only take effect on release lines cut after it merges, and release/v0.19.x and release/v0.20.x would need cherry-picks. This avoids that, and release.yml and publish-chart permissions are unchanged. (Suggested in review by @ayuskauskas.)
  • The release trigger and the commented tag-push option are removed; keeping release as well would publish a human-created release twice. workflow_dispatch is unchanged.

Fixes #873

How this was verified

Only .github/workflows/publish-fern-docs.yml changed. I checked that the YAML parses and that the trigger block is as intended, and confirmed against this repo's existing "Create GitHub Release" runs that head_branch carries the tag name for tag-push runs. actionlint isn't available locally, so CI's Actionlint check is the first real validation of the workflow syntax.

Not run: workflow_run workflows only execute from the default branch, so the new trigger and resolve path first run for real after this merges. A workflow_dispatch of this workflow with a chart tag exercises the resolve step beforehand.

This does not catch up the already-stale chart/v0.19.1 and chart/v0.20.0 releases; that is a manual workflow_dispatch per the "Immediate" option in #873.

📝 Walkthrough

The workflow now starts from completed runs of “Create GitHub Release” instead of published release events. It proceeds for successful chart release runs and retains manual dispatch. Workflow-run executions resolve the tag from workflow_run.head_branch. The workflow identifies prereleases by a hyphen in the resolved version.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 04384

Fern docs now publish automatically after chart releases. However, an operator or agent release, or a failed release, that finishes during a chart docs publish can cancel that publish. The docs then silently stay stale until someone dispatches the workflow manually. Moving the concurrency setting onto the publish job before merging avoids this.

Explanation

Issue #873 requires a durable trigger for Fern publishing after automated chart releases. The workflow now listens for completed successful Create GitHub Release runs and accepts only chart/v... workflow_run.head_branch values. The resolve step validates the tag pattern, verifies the tag, and preserves manual workflow_dispatch. This removes reliance on the suppressed release event. The manual catch-up for existing releases is separate issue guidance and is not required for this coding objective.

Explanation

The pull request changes only .github/workflows/publish-fern-docs.yml. The trigger, job gate, tag source, and pre-release detection changes directly support issue #873. The removed tag-push option and updated comments support the same workflow behavior. No unrelated implementation is present.

One blocking issue, inline, with a suggested alternative.

Comment thread .github/workflows/release.yml Outdated
release.yml creates chart releases under GITHUB_TOKEN, and GitHub does not start
workflows from events created by GITHUB_TOKEN, so publish-fern-docs.yml's
`release: published` trigger never ran for a bot-created chart release.

Trigger publish-fern-docs.yml from a workflow_run on "Create GitHub Release"
instead, gated on success and a chart/v tag (the tag name is the run's
head_branch for a tag-push run). workflow_run always runs the default-branch
copy of the workflow, so tags cut on release branches publish without
cherry-picking anything there. release.yml is unchanged.
