Several index lines already say "Canonical: research/...", so their durable
content has been migrated and the memory is now a pointer to git — exactly what
/claude-memory-audit deletes.
What changes if we do it: the per-session preamble stops carrying rules the
repo's own CLAUDE.md and research/ already state, and what remains in memory
is genuinely machine-local (m1's DB quirks, the shadowed diff, docker
parallelism caps).
What happens if we never do: MEMORY.md keeps growing and keeps restating
git-held facts, and a memory that names a file or flag goes stale silently while
still reading as authoritative.
Run /claude-memory-audit (default mode writes, commits and deletes; pass
--report-only to classify first).
Context: one file was migrated by hand during the 2026-09-25 compact-prep
(feedback-surface-run-decisions.md -> CLAUDE.md above the marker, commit
b87ee3a), taking the count 8 -> 7. The rest were not examined.
