Trying to migrate this repo onto modern pnpm + node package management, since corepack has been removed in node 26.
I've removed the asdf tracking because I don't think it's how node engineers want to configure the repo.
I need to verify install steps now on a fresh machine and check docs.
I think devs may have to run
corepack disablebecause if corepack was previously enabled, it'll still be active and managing the package version.Fixes #1822
