fix: defer unsafe GPU shutdown writes across reboot - #422
Ultimate→Hybrid (and similar) GPU mode changes are applied at shutdown. Today that path can hang or only partially apply:
Writing dgpu_disable=1 while NVIDIA modules are still loaded can hang shutdown (nvidia_drm / ACPI power-off).
The kernel can reject dgpu_disable with -EBUSY until after a MUX flip, and the remaining queue was in-memory only, so it was lost when asusd exited.
This PR persists deferred GPU targets in asusd.ron as pending_gpu, restores them on Armoury start, skips unsafe dgpu_disable writes when NVIDIA is still loaded, and continues applying other queued attributes after a failure so the next reboot can finish the transition.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
GPU settings that cannot be applied during shutdown are retained for a later attempt instead of being lost.
When NVIDIA modules remain loaded, GPU-disable actions stay queued for the next shutdown, while other shutdown actions continue.
A failure to connect to an action or apply its setting no longer stops processing of the remaining actions.
The app now correctly reports the active firmware value even when a different GPU setting is queued.
The change persists deferred GPU firmware settings across restarts. During shutdown, the handler checks whether NVIDIA modules remain loaded and defers nonzero dgpu_disable actions in that case. Per-action proxy and apply failures no longer stop processing later actions.
Changes: Deferred GPU settings
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Persist and restore deferred GPU settings asusd/src/config.rs, asusd/src/asus_armoury.rs
Config stores pending_gpu with a default for older configurations. Armoury restores the queue at startup and synchronizes queue changes to config. Matching queued values are removed after they are already active or a firmware write succeeds.
The shutdown handler checks for NVIDIA module sysfs nodes and defers nonzero dgpu_disable actions while nodes remain. Proxy construction and queued-value application failures now warn and allow later actions to be considered. A test covers the deferral conditions.

Explanation
Title is specific and matches the main change: deferred GPU shutdown writes are persisted across reboot via pending_gpu, and unsafe dgpu_disable writes are skipped while NVIDIA is loaded. It is concise, uses the conventional fix: prefix, and does not rely on vague terms.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem, the approach (pending_gpu persistence, restore on Armoury start, skipping unsafe dgpu_disable writes, continuing after failure), and links issues #399 and #408. It fills in the hardware and environment section and marks the checklist. The Tested Hardware section lists a single unit-test-only validation, which is honest about the gap. The description follows the template structure closely. Minor gap: the 'Fixes' line uses the template's placeholder format correctly, so no remediation is needed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All functional changes relate to the linked issues or to the pending-queue objective that serves them.
asus-shutdown/src/main.rs: boot-stage apply_boot_settings() for restored pending_gpu values. Shutdown apply path shared through apply_queued_actions(). Per-object failure tolerance in fetch_pending_actions(). Continue-on-failure apply loop. NVIDIA deferral predicate and its test. prepare_nvidia_for_gpu_firmware_writes() now returns readiness.
asusd/src/asus_armoury.rs: pending_gpu persistence and restore. Queue clearing on matching value. Restore-default removal of queued GPU targets. Stale armoury_settings GPU cleanup.
asusd/src/config.rs: serde-defaulted pending_gpu field.
asusd/src/aura_laptop/mod.rs: one-line closing-brace change per the summary. It has no behavior effect and no relation to either issue. It is non-functional and does not demonstrate an unrelated change. I did not re-read asusd files at head. This verdict relies on the summary for them and on the whole-PR diff for asus-shutdown/src/main.rs. The previous-head diff was unavailable, so incremental scope is not independently confirmed.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issues: [#399] and [#408]. Both direct.
[#399, shutdown hang] Addressed. At head, should_defer_dgpu_disable(name, value, nvidia_loaded) in asus-shutdown/src/main.rs returns true for any nonzero dgpu_disable while NVIDIA module paths exist. apply_queued_actions() skips that write. The unit test dgpu_disable_is_deferred_while_nvidia_is_loaded covers the predicate. The hang path is therefore not reached while NVIDIA stays bound.
[#399, apply outcome] Not met. The issue expects dgpu_disable=1 to apply and the reboot to complete normally. The new apply_boot_settings() runs at asus-shutdown start. It applies queued values only when nvidia_modules_loaded() is false. In the reported Hybrid state NVIDIA loads on each boot. Each boot therefore defers dgpu_disable again. The shutdown path also defers it when modprobe -r fails. No head code unloads NVIDIA safely or applies dgpu_disable=1 while NVIDIA stays bound. The value stays in pending_gpu indefinitely in the default case.
[#408, apply outcome] Not met. The Ultimate to Hybrid write now continues after EBUSY. gpu_mux_mode=1 applies. pending_gpu persists dgpu_disable=1 across restart. On the following Hybrid boot NVIDIA is loaded. The deferral gate then blocks dgpu_disable=1. The Hybrid to Integrated step that worked on the reporter machine also requires dgpu_disable=1 while NVIDIA is loaded. The PR now blocks that step. The issue alternative, telling the user that an intermediate Hybrid boot is required, is not implemented. No user-visible status is produced. The only output is warn logs in asus-shutdown.
Evidence limits: Code reading and unit tests only. The PR states no physical reboot-cycle validation. The boot-stage NVIDIA-absent branch depends on boot timing relative to nvidia module load. That timing was not verified.
Resolution
Add a path that applies a pending dgpu_disable=1 when NVIDIA stays loaded. The path must not write while nvidia_drm is bound and must not hang shutdown. Either unload NVIDIA safely and verify the unload before the write, or keep the value queued with an explicit blocked state. Add a unit test for the chosen path.
If no safe apply path exists, persist a blocked state for the deferred value. Report it through asusd so asusctl shows it. For [#408], tell the user that an intermediate Hybrid boot is required, or apply the intermediate sequence. State in the PR description that the [#399] apply expectation is deferred. Get agreement from the issue owners.
Validate the Ultimate to Integrated and Hybrid to Integrated paths with a physical reboot cycle on the reported hardware. Record the result in the PR.

Clear the deferred GPU value after a successful restore.
If restore_default succeeds for a GPU attribute with a queued value, this branch removes only armoury_settings. It leaves the value in queued_gpu and the new persistent pending_gpu store. asus-shutdown can then apply the old request and undo the restore, even after an asusd restart. After a successful restore, remove that attribute from the queue and persist the removal using the queue → config lock order.

fetch_pending_actions propagates errors from proxy construction, queued_gpu_value(), and name() with ?. apply_shutdown_settings then propagates that error before it applies any collected action. One object can therefore prevent all valid queued GPU actions from being applied during the shutdown. Keep the error boundary inside the loop and skip only the failing object.

Provide a safe post-reboot apply path for deferred GPU targets.
When pending_gpu contains dgpu_disable=1, start_attributes_zbus only restores it to the in-memory queue. If NVIDIA modules remain loaded after the unload attempts, shutdown skips the value and leaves it queued. The next boot restores the same queue, but no startup path applies it. The Integrated transition can therefore remain pending across reboots.
Do not bypass the NVIDIA guard or perform the unsafe shutdown write. Add a boot-stage consumer that applies the pending values only when the NVIDIA stack is absent, preserves the MUX ordering, and clears each pending value only after a successful write.

In-memory-only GPU queues are lost when asusd exits after a partial
Ultimate→Hybrid shutdown apply, so dgpu_disable never retries. Store
them in asusd.ron as pending_gpu, reload into the shared queue on
Armoury start, and mirror inserts/removals under queue→config lock
order so disk cannot lag a concurrent update.
Also clear queued_gpu/pending_gpu after a successful restore_default so
asus-shutdown cannot re-apply a value the user already cancelled.

Writing dgpu_disable=1 while NVIDIA modules are still loaded can hang
shutdown. Skip that write when unload fails, keep applying remaining
queued attributes in MUX order, and leave unsafe targets queued.
On the next boot, acquire the shutdown inhibitor first, wait until
NVIDIA module presence is settled-absent, then apply restored
pending_gpu values so an Integrated transition cannot stall across
reboots or race a late NVIDIA bind.
