📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added OpenRC service support for the ASUS daemon. It can now be started and stopped through OpenRC, with D-Bus available as a service dependency. This provides a standard way to manage the daemon on systems using OpenRC and reports whether service start and stop operations succeed.

Adds an OpenRC init script for /usr/bin/asusd. The script declares a D-Bus dependency and defines start and stop commands that report their status.

Changes: OpenRC service integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define service lifecycle
data/asusd.initd
The script declares a D-Bus dependency. It starts /usr/bin/asusd in the background with IS_SERVICE=1 and creates /run/asusd.pid. The stop command uses that pidfile. Both commands report their status with eend.

- Around line 31-33: Update the stop invocation in the init script to include an
executable match using the existing command variable alongside the pidfile, so
it only stops the process when both match.
- Line 1: Update the shebang in the OpenRC service script to resolve openrc-run
through the environment rather than hard-coding a distro-specific absolute path;
preserve openrc-run as the interpreter.
- Line 23: Update the custom start-stop-daemon invocation in start() to pass
explicit stdout and stderr log destinations, so asusd output and startup errors
are retained when the process is backgrounded.

L189: # OpenRC Service Script Writing Guide
L190:
L191: This document is aimed at developers or packagers who write OpenRC service scripts, either for their own projects, or for the packages they maintain. It contains advice, suggestions, tips, tricks, hints, and counsel; cautions, warnings, heads-ups, admonitions, proscriptions, enjoinders, and reprimands.
L192: It is intended to prevent common mistakes that are found "in the wild" by pointing out those mistakes and suggesting alternatives. Each good/bad thing that you should/not do has a section devoted to it. We don't consider anything exotic, and assume that you will use start-stop-daemon to manage a fairly typical long-running UNIX process.
L193: # Syntax of Service Scripts
L194:
L195: Service scripts are shell scripts. OpenRC aims at using only the standardized POSIX sh subset for portability reasons. The default interpreter (build-time toggle) is `/bin/sh`, so using for example mksh is not a problem.
L196:
L197: OpenRC has been tested with busybox's sh, `ash`, `dash`, `bash`, `mksh`, `zsh` and possibly others. Using busybox's sh has been difficult as it replaces commands with builtins that don't offer the expected features.
L198: The interpreter for service scripts is `#!/sbin/openrc-run`. Not using this interpreter will break the use of dependencies and is not supported. (iow: if you insist on using `#!/bin/sh` you're on your own)
L199:
L200: A `depend` function declares the dependencies of this service script. All scripts must have start/stop/status functions, but defaults are provided and should be used unless you have a very strong reason not to use them.
L201: Extra functions can be added easily:
L202:
L203:     `extra_commands="checkconfig"
L204:     checkconfig() {
L205:     	doSomething
L206:     }
L207:     `
L208:
L209: This exports the checkconfig function so that `/etc/init.d/someservice checkconfig` will be available, and it "just" runs this function.
L210: While commands defined in `extra_commands` are always available, commands defined in `extra_started_commands` will only work when the service is started and those defined in `extra_stopped_commands` will only work when the service is stopped. This can be used for implementing graceful reload and similar behaviour.
L211: Adding a restart function will not work, this is a design decision within OpenRC. Since there may be dependencies involved (e.g. network -> apache) a restart function is in general not going to work. restart is internally mapped to `stop()` + `start()` (plus handling dependencies). # OpenRC README

OpenRC is a dependency-based init system that works with the system-provided init program, normally `/sbin/init`.

## building and installing

OpenRC uses the meson build system, so use the usual methods for this build system to build and install.

## Notes

We don't support building a static OpenRC with PAM.

`rc` and `rc.shutdown` are the hooks from the BSD init into OpenRC.

`devd.conf` is modified from FreeBSD to call `/etc/rc.devd` which is a generic hook into OpenRC.

`inittab` is the same, but for SysVInit as used by most Linux distributions. This can be found in the support folder.

Obviously, if you're installing this onto a system that does not use OpenRC by default then you may wish to backup the above listed files, remove them and then install so that the OS hooks into OpenRC.

If you are installing this onto a system which has separate / and /usr file systems and expects / to be mounted before /usr, you will need to make sure the appropriate pieces are installed on / by passing the appropriate options to "meson setup" as follows:

    `$ meson setup \
            --bindir /bin --libdir /lib64 --libexecdir /lib --sbindir /sbin \
            build_path
    `

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; There are default implementations in `lib/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh` - this allows very compact service scripts. ... If you keep the service script in your own distribution's repository, then you have to keep the command path and package synchronized yourself, and that's no fun.

OpenRC has been tested with busybox's sh, `ash`, `dash`, `bash`, `mksh`, `zsh` and possibly others. Using busybox's sh has been difficult as it replaces commands with builtins that don't offer the expected features.

A `depend` function declares the dependencies of this service script. All scripts must have start/stop/status functions, but defaults are provided and should be used unless you have a very strong reason not to use them.

Extra functions can be added easily:

    `extra_commands="checkconfig"
    checkconfig() {
    	doSomething
    }
    `

This exports the checkconfig function so that `/etc/init.d/someservice checkconfig` will be available, and it "just" runs this function.

While commands defined in `extra_commands` are always available, commands defined in `extra_started_commands` will only work when the service is started and those defined in `extra_stopped_commands` will only work when the service is stopped. This can be used for implementing graceful reload and similar behaviour.

Adding a restart function will not work, this is a design decision within OpenRC. Since there may be dependencies involved (e.g. network -> apache) a restart function is in general not going to work. restart is internally mapped to `stop()` + `start()` (plus handling dependencies). If a service needs to behave differently when it is being restarted vs started or stopped, it should test the `$RC_CMD` variable, for example:

    `[ "$RC_CMD" = restart ] && do_something
    `

# OpenRC

Warning Arch Linux only has official support for systemd. [1] When using OpenRC, please mention so in support requests.

OpenRC is a service manager maintained by the Gentoo developers. OpenRC is dependency based and works with the system provided init program, normally SysVinit.

## Installation

For details on init components, see Init.

Install the openrc^{AUR} package.

From version 0.25 onward, OpenRC provides its own init at `/usr/bin/openrc-init`. Optionally, you can use other inits from, e.g., busybox. Note that when `openrc-init` is used, it must be paired with `openrc-shutdown`, and not the `shutdown` or `reboot` commands from other packages, otherwise you will encounter errors.

A basic set of service files are available from the openrc-arch-services-git^{AUR} package. Other packages may have service files provided outside this package; a search on the AUR is recommended.

To maintain compatibility with historical init scripts, configuration files are installed to `/etc/openrc/`.

### Booting

For booting with OpenRC, set the `init` option in the kernel parameters.

To use OpenRC's built-in init, set `init=/usr/bin/openrc-init`.

Note that when using `openrc-init`, the `/etc/inittab` file is not used.

## Configuration

The `/etc/openrc/conf.d` directory, and the `/etc/openrc/rc.d` file is used for configuration.

For general information on configuring OpenRC, see:

  * OpenRC manuals
  * Gentoo:OpenRC.

For instructions when migrating from systemd, see Init#Configuration.

### Services

OpenRC services are enabled by issuing `rc-update add service_name runlevel` as root. It is recommended to at least enable the following services:

Service name | Runlevel | Description
--- | --- | ---
udev  | sysinit  | Device hot-plugging
alsa | default | ALSA state
acpid | default | ACPI events
dbus | default | Messaging bus
dcron  | default  | Scheduling
syslog-ng  | default  | System logs

Warning If using `init=/usr/bin/openrc-init` in your kernel parameters, you will need to manually enable getty services, otherwise you will be left with no interactive TTYs as stated in the documentation.

If necessary, create services for each wanted getty by creating symbolic links to `/etc/openrc/init.d/getty`. E.g. for `/dev/tty1`:

    # ln -s /etc/openrc/init.d/agetty{,.tty1}
    # rc-update add agetty.tty1 default

To prevent PAM from attempting to register with systemd after logging into the tty (which can sometimes cause problems, it is safe to remove or comment out the lines mentioning systemd in `/etc/pam.d/system-auth`.

See also Gentoo:Systemd#Native services.

### Network

The network is configured through `newnet` [2]. Modify the `/etc/openrc/conf.d/network` file; both the `ip` (iproute2) and the `ifconfig` (net-tools) commands are supported. Below is an example configuration using `ip`.

    ip_eth0="192.168.1.2/24"
    defaultiproute="via 192.168.1.1"
    ifup_eth0="ip link set \$int mtu 1500"

The network service is added to the boot runlevel by default, so no further action is required. See Network configuration for general networking information.

Note You may also use NetworkManager or dhcpcd by enabling the respective services.

OpenRC has been tested with busybox's sh, `ash`, `dash`, `bash`, `mksh`, `zsh` and possibly others. Using busybox's sh has been difficult as it replaces commands with builtins that don't offer the expected features.

The interpreter for service scripts is `#!/sbin/openrc-run`. Not using this interpreter will break the use of dependencies and is not supported. (iow: if you insist on using `#!/bin/sh` you're on your own)

A `depend` function declares the dependencies of this service script. All scripts must have start/stop/status functions, but defaults are provided and should be used unless you have a very strong reason not to use them.

Extra functions can be added easily:

    `extra_commands="checkconfig"
    checkconfig() {
    	doSomething
    }

    `[ "$RC_CMD" = restart ] && do_something
    `

Do not hard-code a distro-specific OpenRC path.

data/asusd.initd uses /usr/bin/openrc-run, while upstream OpenRC and Alpine document /sbin/openrc-run. On an installation that provides only /sbin/openrc-run, the service cannot execute and fails before start() runs. Use the interpreter path supplied by the target OpenRC package. The repository does not define an OpenRC target, so do not assume /usr/bin or /sbin universally.

Review comment at @data/asusd.initd at line 1:
Update the shebang in the OpenRC service script to resolve openrc-run through
the environment rather than hard-coding a distro-specific absolute path;
preserve openrc-run as the interpreter.

23-23: Preserve backgrounded daemon output.

This remains the unresolved previous finding. --background can close the daemon's standard descriptors, which loses startup errors on systems without journald. Pass explicit --stdout and --stderr destinations.

33-33: Match the executable when stopping.

This remains the unresolved previous finding. A stale pidfile can reference a reused PID. Add --exec "${command}" so the stop operation matches both the PID and executable.

Mirror the required pre-start delay.

data/asusd.service waits for systemd-udevd and then sleeps for one second because hid_asus and MCU initialization can fail during boot. The OpenRC service requires only dbus and starts asusd immediately. This leaves a reachable startup race when device initialization is incomplete.

Install data/asusd.initd from install-data-asusd.

The Makefile never installs the new OpenRC script. install-data-asusd copies the systemd units, udev rules, D-Bus policy, and LED configuration, but not data/asusd.initd. make install runs this target, and distro-packaging/PKGBUILD calls make install. An OpenRC install through these paths does not get the asusd service script.
