load_vocab_files registers every .voc a skill ships, in every language. Each phrase and each alias went out at once as its own legacy register_vocab message:

  • about 30,000 bus messages for 18 skills at 11 languages;
  • every one relayed to every bus client and dispatched;
  • yet only two of those skills define an adapt intent.

The adapt engine is the only reader of that topic, and it only needs the vocabularies its intents require. It also receives the samples through ovos.intent.register.keyword (INTENT-4).

What changes. All of it is inside _AdaptIntentApi, so dropping adapt compatibility removes it too:

  • emit_legacy_register_vocab queues the emit, per vocabulary, until an adapt intent of the same skill names it in require, optionally, one_of or exclude.
  • emit_legacy_register_intent flushes those vocabularies ahead of the intent, so adapt sees the same order as before.
  • A later registration of a vocabulary that is already in use goes out at once.
  • Regex entities are still sent immediately.
  • IntentServiceInterface.register_keyword and load_vocab_files are unchanged from dev: still one legacy call each.
  • _adapt_keyword_samples is filled as before, so the INTENT-4 registration still carries the samples.

Measured on a runtime with 18 skills at 11 languages (local harness with the hub's own venv, on top of OpenVoiceOS/ovos-bus-client#386, #387 and #704):

  • all skills loaded: 45.5 s to 30.8 s after container start;
  • IntentService ready: 16.5 s to 10.3 s.

Same runtime, before against after:

  • ovos.intent.list for en-US is identical: 142 rows, the same keyword rows for the two adapt skills;
  • every probe utterance went to the same skill. That covered the adapt keyword intents in English and French, a padatious intent in four languages, and converse games.

Tests: test/unittests/test_lazy_legacy_vocab.py covers no emit without an intent, the flush before register_intent with the producer kept, an immediate emit once a vocabulary is in use, and aliases and languages flushing together. The legacy-vocab assertions in test_intent_service_interface.py and test_intent4_producer.py now register the adapt intent that names the vocabulary first. The unit suite passes: 765.

(The measurement above used the first revision, which deferred only load_vocab_files. The review asked for every registration to be deferred inside the adapt helper, which can only remove more messages.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Legacy vocabulary registrations are now sent when an intent references them, and are delivered before that intent. Registrations for vocabularies already in use continue to be sent immediately.
    • Vocabulary associated with unrelated intents is not sent as part of another intent’s registration. Aliases and language variants are delivered together when referenced.

…use it

load_vocab_files registers every .voc a skill ships, in every language,
and each phrase and alias went out at once as its own legacy
register_vocab message: ~30,000 bus messages for 18 skills at 11
languages, relayed to every bus client, while only two of those skills
define an adapt intent. The adapt engine is the only reader of that
topic, and only for the vocabularies its intents require.

With defer_legacy (passed by load_vocab_files only) the legacy emit is
queued per vocabulary until an adapt intent of the skill names it;
register_intent flushes it ahead of the intent, and later registrations
of a vocabulary already in use go out at once. Explicit register_keyword
calls are unchanged. The samples are cached as before, so the
INTENT-4 keyword registration still carries them.

Legacy vocabulary registrations are now queued until an Adapt intent references their vocabulary names. The API emits matching registrations before the intent and sends later registrations immediately. Unit tests cover deferred, selective, and immediate emission, including aliases across languages.

Changes

Legacy vocabulary registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queue and flush vocabulary
ovos_workshop/intents.py
The API queues legacy vocabulary by unmunged name, tracks names referenced by intents, and emits matching registrations before the intent registration.
Validate deferred registration behavior
test/unittests/test_lazy_legacy_vocab.py, test/unittests/test_intent4_producer.py, test/unittests/test_intent_service_interface.py
New tests cover deferred and immediate emission, intent constraints, and aliases across languages. Existing producer and interface tests now account for vocabulary being emitted when an intent references it.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2f4d8

Deferred vocabulary may reflect aliases changed after registration. Confirm alias ownership and snapshot the list if callers can mutate it; this does not establish a broader merge-blocking failure.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2f4d8

Keyword publication is deferred for explicit registrations as well as bulk loading, contrary to the stated compatibility goal. A failed flush also discards queued registrations before they can be retried. Normal execution preserves skill identity and vocabulary-before-intent ordering, but deployed consumer compatibility and recovery remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · observed: Deferral changes the public registration contract beyond bulk loading. Explicit register_keyword, register_vocabulary, and register_adapt_keyword calls can now return without publishing legacy vocabulary, and publication requires a matching intent registration on the same interface. The reviewed head provides no opt-out despite the stated promise that explicit calls remain immediate. This broadens the compatibility and lifecycle obligations across dependent skills; deployed consumer compatibility is unverified.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The pending-to-published transition is not retry-safe. A vocabulary's entire queue is removed before its entity and alias messages are emitted. If emission raises partway through, undelivered entries are no longer available to a subsequent intent-registration retry. That retry can publish a legacy intent against incomplete vocabulary state, potentially affecting required or excluded matches and failure containment. The initial exception prevents immediate intent publication, and complete INTENT-4 samples may mitigate the outcome; actual matching consequences depend on the external consumer.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new state is scoped to one registration interface, while the shared library change affects both bulk-loaded and explicitly registered vocabulary for dependent skills. The supported exposure is incomplete or delayed intent-consumer state for those skills; no new cross-tenant, infrastructure, credential, or privileged-tool authority was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Registration copies the ambient message and stamps the interface's skill_id before queueing. Legacy emission forwards that stored message rather than rediscovering ambient identity. Normal-path tests check the registering skill's attribution. This preserves producer attribution; it does not establish receiver-side authentication or authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — On a flush exception, the first intent publication is stopped, which contains the immediate failure. Retrying can nevertheless publish the legacy intent without the discarded vocabulary. If an excluded vocabulary is affected, exclusion matching may differ from the declared behavior; no verified authorization bypass or attacker-triggered failure was established, and complete INTENT-4 publication may mitigate the discrepancy.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give pending, in-flight, and completed vocabulary publication explicit ownership and replay semantics, serialize registration with flushing, and prevent intent publication after an incomplete flush. Define consumer-side deduplication and recovery requirements rather than treating removal from the producer queue as successful delivery.

The queue and its flush now live in _AdaptIntentApi:
emit_legacy_register_vocab queues until an adapt intent names the
vocabulary, and emit_legacy_register_intent flushes it ahead of the
intent. IntentServiceInterface and load_vocab_files are back to their
single legacy calls, so dropping adapt compatibility removes the
deferral with them. Every keyword registration is deferred the same
way; regex entities are still sent at once. Tests that read the legacy
vocabulary register the adapt intent that names it first.
