feat(automations): continue the last session without pinning a workspace first - #9347
The "running in a new session / continuing the last session" option is now always available in the automation editor, not only when a workspace is pinned.
When an automation continues sessions and has no pinned workspace, the first run's workspace (local or cloud) becomes the pin. Later runs reuse it and continue the session that run left.
Why / Context
Until now, continuing a session required picking an existing workspace up front. An automation that creates its own workspace had to start a new workspace every run, with no way to say "keep using the one you made last time".
How It Works
planTarget no longer refuses continueAgentSession without a pin. The mode now survives pin, host and project changes: it describes how runs behave, not one particular workspace.
New pinCreatedWorkspace in run.ts writes the created workspace as the pin. It only writes when the automation is still unpinned and still continuing, so a pin a person set in the meantime is not overwritten.
Local: called when createFreshWorkspace creates the workspace. This includes the gone-pin fallback, which clears the stale pin first, so a deleted pinned workspace is replaced instead of the automation going back to a new workspace each run.
Cloud: called after startCloudWorkspace when there was no pin. A stale cloud pin still moves through replacePin.
replacePin no longer forces continueAgentSession to false. The first run in a new pin finds no earlier session there (previousRunSession filters by workspace), so it starts a fresh session either way.
Desktop: the session chip always renders, and changing device, project or workspace no longer resets it.
CLI: removed the client-side --session + --continue-session refusal, and updated the flag help text and cli-reference.mdx.
Compatibility
The input schema is unchanged; the server only accepts a combination it used to refuse. Older desktop builds hide the chip when no workspace is pinned and send continueAgentSession: false when a workspace is cleared, which still behaves correctly. Released CLIs still refuse --session --continue-session locally, which is harmless. The continueNeedsPinnedWorkspace server-error message is no longer thrown; I left it in server-errors.ts to avoid catalog churn.
Manual QA Checklist
Not yet done in a running app:
Local automation, no workspace picked: choose "continuing the last session" and save. Run 1 creates a workspace, which now shows in "using". Run 2 delivers into the same agent session.
Cloud automation, environment only: same flow. Run 1 starts a cloud workspace, and run 2 continues in it.
Delete the pinned local workspace, then run: a fresh workspace is created and becomes the new pin.
"In a new session" with no pin: each run still creates its own workspace, and nothing is pinned.
Testing
bun test src/router/automation in packages/trpc: 42 pass. The planTarget tests were updated for the new rules, including a new "continues a session with no pin yet" case.
bun run typecheck passes in packages/trpc and packages/cli. In apps/desktop, the only errors are TS1149 file-casing errors from this worktree's path, none in changed files.
biome check passes on the changed files.
pinCreatedWorkspace has no unit test: packages/trpc has no database harness.
Summary by cubic
The "continue the last session" option in the automation editor now works without pinning a workspace first. Previously, continuing a session required selecting an existing workspace up front, so automations that create their own workspace had to start fresh every run. Now, when an unpinned automation continues sessions, the first run's workspace (local or cloud) becomes the pin, and later runs reuse that workspace and continue the session it left.
Key changes
planTarget no longer rejects continueAgentSession without a pin, and keeps the mode through pin, host, and project changes.
New pinCreatedWorkspace writes the created workspace as the pin only when the automation is still unpinned and still continuing, so a pin set manually in the meantime is not overwritten. It also handles a deleted pinned workspace by replacing the stale pin.
replacePin no longer forces continueAgentSession to false, since the first run in a new pin finds no earlier session and starts fresh anyway.
In the desktop editor, the session chip always renders and is no longer reset when the device, project, or workspace changes.
The CLI no longer refuses --session combined with --continue-session; help text and cli-reference.mdx were updated.
The input schema is unchanged; the server only accepts a combination it used to refuse. Older desktop builds hide the chip when no workspace is pinned and send continueAgentSession: false when a workspace is cleared, which still behaves correctly.

New Features
Automations can now continue agent sessions without a pre-pinned workspace. The first run’s workspace is retained for later runs.
The session-mode picker is available regardless of the selected workspace.
Automation updates can combine session selection with session continuation.
Bug Fixes
Changing or clearing a host, project, or workspace no longer turns off session continuation.
…ace first
"Continue the last session" needed a pinned workspace, so an automation
that creates its workspace could not keep one going. Now the option is
always offered. With no pin, the first run's workspace becomes the pin,
local or cloud, and later runs go back to it and continue the session.
- planTarget no longer refuses continueAgentSession without a pin, and
keeps the mode when the pin changes or clears.
- Dispatch pins a created workspace when the automation continues and is
still unpinned (pinCreatedWorkspace). A gone pin is replaced the same
way, and replacePin no longer turns the mode off.
- The editor always shows the session chip and stops resetting it.
- CLI: drop the --session/--continue-session guard; update help and docs.
Automation session continuation no longer requires a pinned workspace. When a continuing automation creates a workspace without an existing pin, dispatch pins that workspace. The desktop picker, CLI behavior, documentation, and tests reflect these changes.

Target planning preserves session continuation when workspace pins change and accepts continuation without a pin. The desktop picker is always shown, and the CLI update command no longer rejects --session with --continue-session. Tests and descriptions reflect continuation without a pinned workspace.
Pin the first created workspace packages/trpc/src/router/automation/run.ts, packages/trpc/src/router/automation/{dispatch,cloudDispatch}.ts
pinCreatedWorkspace sets a null cloud or v2 workspace pin for a continuing automation. Fresh-workspace and cloud dispatch use the helper when creating a workspace without an existing pin. Replacing a stale pin no longer disables session continuation.

Later runs can lose session continuity when host placement changes, and changing targets during workspace creation can leave subsequent runs using the old project or environment. Resolve these pinning issues before merging unless explicitly accepted.

Cover the first-run pin write in the automation tests.
The new no-pin test checks only planTarget output. No test calls pinCreatedWorkspace (run.ts:106). The v2 dispatch path (dispatch.ts:252-254) and the cloud path (cloudDispatch.ts:139-141) both call it when continueAgentSession is set. If that write became a no-op, the new test would still pass, and a later run could create a new workspace instead of reusing the first one.
No automation test in this directory mocks db, so covering the write needs a new seam. Add a test that the first run stores the created workspace ID, and that a later dispatch reads that ID back.

Keep the pinned host with a continuing automation's workspace pin.
Pinning stores only v2WorkspaceId, and targetHostId stays null. A later run can select another online host. That host returns NOT_FOUND for the pinned ID, so the stale-pin fallback clears the pin and starts a fresh workspace on the new host. The first run's session is not continued.

Compare the creation-time target when pinning the first run's workspace.
pinCreatedWorkspace pins when the automation is unpinned and continuing. Its WHERE clause does not compare the target that the workspace was created for. If the host, project, or environment changes during creation, the pin refers to a workspace for the old target. Later runs send that id without a target check. On the host path, the agent continues in a workspace of the old project. On the cloud path, the run reuses a workspace from the old environment. A host change does not persist this error: the next run receives a not-found response and creates a workspace on the new host.
Pass the creation-time target from the dispatch snapshot, and compare it in the same UPDATE. Use isNull for a null value:

Review verdict: minor issues. The approach is sound and CI is green. Two pin-correctness gaps can quietly lose the session this feature is meant to keep.
Medium:dispatch.ts:252 / run.ts:106: pinCreatedWorkspace writes v2WorkspaceId but not targetHostId. A host-less automation then gets a pin with no host. The next run can pick another online host (dispatch.ts:405), get a 404, and re-pin a new workspace, which restarts the session. Fix: set targetHostId = host.machineId in the same guarded update.
Medium:AutomationBody.tsx:139: the editor saves the full draft, including v2WorkspaceId: null / cloudWorkspaceId: null. The page polls every 60 s, so if you Run now and then save an edit, the auto-pin is wiped (targetPlan.ts:104). Fix: send only the scope fields that changed, or refresh and nudge after pinning.
Low:packages/mcp/src/tools/automations/create.ts:99 and update.ts:45 still say a pin is required.
Low:dispatch.ts:237-253: for PR triggers, the first PR's checkout becomes the pin for every later PR. Is that intended?
Low: the continueNeedsPinnedWorkspace i18n key is now dead. Worth a follow-up cleanup.
Verified at 64e60e6c: bun test src/router/automation 42/42 pass, trpc and cli typecheck clean. In the desktop (CDP), the session chip renders with no pin and offers both options. I did not run an end-to-end local or cloud run in the sandbox, so your manual QA checklist is still the gate.
