Problem

Pull requests went straight to main, which is also the release branch, so there was no integration branch for test deployment.

Change

  • CONTRIBUTING.md: new branches start from origin/dev and pull requests target dev. main takes releases only, merged from dev.
  • ci.yml: CI also runs on pushes to dev. It already ran on every pull request.
  • Unchanged: the docs site deploys from main only, and the package publishes from v* tags.

dev was created from main at 919b3fd (v0.15.0).

Work now flows feature branch -> dev -> main. dev is the integration
branch used for test deployment; main takes releases only, merged from
dev. CONTRIBUTING.md starts new branches from origin/dev and opens pull
requests against dev.

CI already runs on every pull request; it now also runs on pushes to
dev, so merges into the integration branch are checked as merges into
main are. The docs site still deploys from main only, at release time,
and the package still publishes from v* tags.
