commitRootedFileContents' overwrite opened the observed file, verified its
identity and preimage through the handle, and then truncated and rewrote it
in place. The truncation is the last irreversible step, and it happens
before the first byte of the replacement is written: a write failure after
it - ENOSPC is the canonical case, and no mid-write failure is reportable
otherwise - destroyed the working file instead of failing the command:
existing.txt holds "observed\n"; the tool writes with a full disk
-> write fails -> existing.txt is now empty
The same in-place truncation rewrites a hard link sibling's bytes when the
replaced name is reached through another link, and it shows every
intermediate state to a concurrent reader.
The commit now stages the replacement bytes to a side file created through
the root handle (pathjail.CreateTemp, the same mechanism the structured
patch path publishes with), carries the observed file's permission bits
over, re-checks the observed identity against the path as late as the
rename allows, and swaps the path over with root.Rename. A create stages
the same way and publishes through the exclusive no-replace link, so a
raced create is refused rather than replaced, and a create whose bytes
cannot complete leaves no file at all. Failures remove the side file and
leave the preimage standing, which the new regression tests pin at both
the commit layer and the write/edit tools, each side file accounted for.
Identity and preimage validation, the rooted-open containment (a parent
swapped for a symlink is still refused by the kernel), the
errFileChangedDuringWrite surface, and the before-open race hooks are
unchanged.

…granted mode
Two findings from the CodeRabbit review on the atomic-overwrite PR:
- The create arm published through the structured-patch no-replace
publisher, whose exclusive-copy fallback copies into the visible
target, so a concurrent reader could see partial content under a
filesystem that refuses hard links. The create path now reserves the
name with the same exclusive create it has always honored and hands
the reserved file the finished side-file bytes in one rename, over an
empty file this call itself reserved, so a reader sees only the absent
file, the empty reservation, or the whole file. Losing the reservation
still refuses the raced create, and cleanup after a failure removes
only what the same-file identity check proves this call created.
- The publish carried the requested permission bits to the side file
with a chmod, which never consults the process umask, so a umask-077
process that used to receive a 0o600 file from the exclusive create
received 0o644 - readable by every stranger. The reserved create now
supplies the mode: the bits the kernel granted its reservation under
the caller's umask are observed from the reservation and carried to
the side file before the rename, on every platform, with no
umask-syscall dance.
The structured-patch publisher keeps its own pinned fallback contract;
only the file tool's create arm changes. The restrictive-umask
subtest fails on the previous code with
file_commit_umask_test.go:49: published mode = 0644, want the 0600 the
kernel granted the reservation under this umask

Make final publication conditional on the validated object.
commitRootedFileCreate and commitRootedFileOverwrite perform a separate identity check before root.Rename. os.Root.Rename replaces an existing non-directory destination and provides no identity or no-replace condition. A concurrent replacement after the check can therefore be silently overwritten. This violates the create no-replace and overwrite conflict guarantees. Narrowing the documentation alone would leave the behavioral defect.
Use a conditional compare-and-swap publication primitive, or serialize the complete validate, stage, and publish sequence across all writers. Preserve atomic publication for readers.

Thanks for this. Staging the bytes beside the target is the right shape for the ENOSPC case, but the rename changes two things that main gets right today.
On Windows, a file that another process has open can't be written any more. root.Rename over an existing name fails while any process holds the destination open, whatever share mode the reader asked for. I drove write_file through the registry with a plain os.Open reader holding the target. Main overwrites it; this head refuses with renameat zero-write.….tmp open.txt: Access is denied. and keeps the old bytes. edit_file goes through the same commit. Editors, language servers, test runs and antivirus scanners hold files open all the time on Windows, so this would show up as intermittent failures in the file tools. Failing closed is the right direction, but it needs either a publish that works with open readers on Windows or a fallback when the rename is refused, plus a test with an open reader.
Symlinked files. The rename replaces the name it's given, so for a symlink inside the workspace it swaps the link for a regular file and the target keeps its old bytes. Main writes through the link: root.OpenFile follows links that stay inside the root, and both identity checks look through it. I couldn't create a symlink on this box (no symlink privilege), so this comes from rename semantics rather than a run; a test on the Linux and macOS runners would settle it. Hard links get the same treatment, which the description calls intended. Vim's backupcopy=auto writes in place for exactly these two cases, and keeping main's behaviour for linked targets is worth considering.
CodeRabbit's open point is right in substance too. Main wrote through the handle it had validated, so the identity check bound the write. Publishing by name gives that up for the window between the Stat and the Rename.
A create now publishes with a kernel no-replace rename, with a no-replace hard-link fallback for filesystems that cannot support it, so losing the create race can no longer replace the winner. This removes the reservation and its identity-sensitive cleanup entirely. An overwrite resolves a final-component symlink and renames over the file the link names, preserving the link as main did. The destination identity is rechecked as the last operation before the rename; when the platform refuses the rename (notably Windows with an open reader), the write falls back to the previous in-place path only after reopening and revalidating the same object and preimage. The staged file now carries the observed overwrite mode rather than the staging mode, and the mode regression test uses a value distinct from the staging mode.

Thanks for the feedback @Vasanthdev2004 Pushed Create no longer reserves a name. Overwrite revalidates as late as the rename allows. The target identity is checked with Windows open readers take the in-place fallback when the rename is refused: the destination is reopened, identity and preimage are revalidated through that handle, and only then is the previous write path used. Symlinks are resolved through Permissions: creates derive the published mode from the staging open under the process umask while content is staged Validation in the worktree: |

Thanks, both are handled at 48f65ca.
- Open readers. My probe with a plain
os.Openreader holding the target overwrites again, and the fallback re-validates the same object before it writes in place. Each of these fails a test: taking the fallback out, skipping its identity and preimage recheck, or dropping theLstatcheck right before the rename. - Symlinks. The publish now goes to the link's target inside the root, and absolute or escaping links are refused.
TestOverwriteKeepsAnInWorkspaceSymlinkskips here, where I have no symlink privilege, but it runs on the Linux and macOS runners, and CI is 10/10.
Hard links still detach, which is what the issue asks for, and the kernel no-replace create is cleaner than reserving the name first. internal/pathjail and internal/tools pass under -race on Windows, and vet is clean for windows, linux and darwin. Approving.
Fixes #1156
What changed and why
commitRootedFileContents' overwrite truncated the observed file in place before the replacement was written. A write that failed after that point — ENOSPC being the canonical case — destroyed the caller's file instead of failing the command, rewrote a hard link sibling's bytes through the shared inode, and exposed every intermediate state to a concurrent reader. The invariant the preimage checks work to protect ("the bytes the caller observed stay the bytes until the write commits") ended at the truncate. The commit now stages the replacement and publishes it atomically:
pathjail.CreateTempMode), carries the observed permission bits onto it, resolves a final-component symlink inside the root and renames over the file the link names. The link survives, as it did on main, and its target receives the new bytes. The destination identity is re-checked withLstatas the last operation before the rename.pathjail.RenameNoReplace(kernelrenameat2,renameatx_np, orFileRenameInformationwith replacement disabled). Filesystems without a no-replace rename fall back to a no-replace hard link, which also never exposes a partially copied target. The reserved-name step and its identity-sensitive cleanup are gone entirely.TestOverwriteSucceedsWithAnOpenReadercovers a plainos.Openreader holding the target.0o644at staging time and carry the umask-granted bits to publication, while content is staged owner-only. Overwrites stage0o600and carry the observed mode; the regression test now uses0o640, a value the staging mode cannot satisfy by coincidence.Root.OpenRootand pass bare components to the no-replace primitive; final-component symlinks are resolved throughroot.Lstat/root.Readlink, and absolute or escaping targets are refused.Identity/preimage validation, rooted-open containment,
errFileChangedDuringWrite, and the before-open race hooks are unchanged.Residual limitation
No supported platform offers a compare-and-swap rename. The overwrite path closes the validate→publish window to the final
Lstatimmediately beforerename, but a non-cooperating writer that replaces the name between that check and the syscall can still be replaced. The code documents this. Closing it fully would require a kernel CAS primitive, or serializing every writer outside the tools, which the tools cannot do. Create is now a true atomic no-replace publication.Regression evidence
