The first ARA preflight run failed with no way to act on it:

OK 1/3 dynamic secret read denied (HTTP 403)
FAIL 2/3 allowed ARA read: expected HTTP 200, got 403
FAIL 3/3 forbidden ARA operation: expected HTTP 400 with an AI policy rejection, got 403

The step printed only status codes, so a 403 could not be attributed to a cause. Reading the gateway, several distinct failures converge on 403 and the response body is the only thing that separates them.

Change

A failing ARA check now prints the gateway error text, newlines flattened and capped at 300 characters. The gateway answers /config/target_query errors with http.Error, so the body is plain text and needs no parsing.

A successful body is still never printed — it could carry a secret value if a check unexpectedly passes.

The error strings this exposes name the cause directly (runtime authority is not available for your account tier, missing allow_access capability on ara-rule) and carry no credential material.

Why the body is needed

  • A missing ara-rule surfaces as 500, not 403 — the denial is a bare error with no status text, so it falls back to StatusInternalServerError. The UAM handler returns 200 with an empty capability list for ARARule rather than denying, so this path is reachable and distinct.
  • 403 comes from the account-tier gate, which checks TierByProduct[AgenticRuntimeAuthorityProduct] specifically, and also fires when the gateway cannot fetch account details at all (empty tier).
  • A wrapped error containing the literal Status 403 Forbidden also maps to 403 via substring match.

The printed text separates these in a single run.

Validation

  • actionlint clean.
  • Script simulated under bash -e with a stubbed curl: the observed 403 case, a missing-ara-rule 500 case, and the happy path. Both failure modes now name themselves; the happy path exits 0 and does not print the response body.

Note

This branch carries only the diagnostic change. The preflight step itself is still marked TEMPORARY and must be deleted before the agent flow is considered done.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Preflight checks now distinguish HTML edge-proxy error pages from Akeyless responses, so an edge-proxy response is no longer treated as a valid denial. Failed calls can include a gateway error excerpt of up to 300 characters, and failures in the allowed ARA read check can include response details. Successful response bodies remain hidden.

…fails

The first preflight run returned 403 on both ARA checks with no way to
tell why, because the step printed only status codes. A failing ARA call
now prints the gateway's error text, flattened and capped at 300 chars.
Those messages name the cause directly -- wrong account tier, missing
allow_access on ara-rule -- and carry no credential material. A
successful body is still never printed.

Walkthrough

The workflow adds renanaAkeyless to its actor allowlist and switches to the akeyless-slim-spot runner. ARA preflight checks now distinguish edge-proxy HTML responses from gateway responses and report diagnostics when checks fail. Successful response bodies remain unprinted.

An unexpectedly successful forbidden ARA check can expose its response body in workflow logs. The behavior is confirmed, but the response's contents are unknown; address or explicitly accept this bounded risk before merging.

renanaAkeyless and others added 3 commits October 12, 2026 13:37
The actor allowlist gates who may run the job, separately from who may
dispatch the workflow. renanaAkeyless owns the ARA migration and needs
to run the preflight checks without routing every attempt through
another maintainer.

Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
The preflight run returned 403 on all three checks with an HTML body:
<!doctype html>...<title>403</title>403 Forbidden. Akeyless answers
errors as plain text via http.Error, so that page came from a load
balancer or WAF and the requests never reached the gateway.

Check 1 was passing on exactly that response, reading an edge 403 as
proof that the dynamic-secret read had been revoked. It now fails as
inconclusive, which is what it always should have done.

Every preflight request from a GitHub-hosted runner came back as an HTML
403 from Google Front End, on /api/v2 as well as /config/target_query.
The same paths answer 400 and 401 from inside our network, so the
gateway is healthy and the load balancer is refusing the runner's IP.

The old flow never hit this: it read the dynamic secret from public SaaS
via the Akeyless action, which defaults to api.akeyless.io. ARA is the
first thing in this workflow that needs the private gateway.
