🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winPreserve the Kubernetes Job reference when unresponsive cleanup fails.
When
_cleanup(raise_on_error=True)raisesContainerCleanupErrorforKubernetesEngine, thefinallyblock still calls_fail_instance(..., cleanup_already_done=True). This marks the processFAILEDand clearsactivation_pod_id.
_check_non_finalized_instances()treatsFAILEDas finalized. A later explicitstart()can therefore create another Job while the original Job may still exist. Automatic restart is skipped, andrestart()also stops before creating a replacement when cleanup fails, so the consequence is limited to a later explicitstart().Handle Kubernetes cleanup failure like the monitor cleanup-failure branch. Set the activation to
ERROR, preserve the process status andactivation_pod_id, and re-raise the cleanup error. Keep the current behavior for non-Kubernetes engines. The existing named tests use the generic
ContainerEnginemock and should continue to expectFAILED. Add a Kubernetes-specific regression test instead of changing those tests.🐛 Suggested fix

Persist the Kubernetes namespace where each activation Job is created on RulebookProcess.activation_job_namespace so that lifecycle operations (monitor, stop, cleanup, logs) target the correct namespace even when the namespace env var changes at runtime. Model and migration: - Add activation_job_namespace nullable TextField to RulebookProcess (migration 0075, based on 0074). - Add ACTIVATION_TERMINAL_STATUSES frozenset to enums. Engine (kubernetes.py): - Extract shared helpers: resolve_activation_namespace(), verify_namespace_accessible(), make_job_name(). - resolve_activation_namespace() reads EDA_CONTAINER_GROUP_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE, falls back to deprecated EDA_ACTIVATION_JOB_NAMESPACE with warning, then to the SA namespace file. - Refactor _set_namespace() to use shared helpers; reject inaccessible overrides on 4xx and retry transient server errors with backoff. - Log environment-selected namespace overrides at DEBUG level. - Verify Job and Pod deletion during cleanup. Skip the deletion watch when no Pods remain, while retaining post-deletion verification. Activation manager: - Use _instance_engine to target each process's recorded namespace, retaining the engine default for legacy processes with a null value. - Record the engine namespace on new processes. - Log each successfully started Kubernetes Job with activation name/ID, new instance ID and namespace; include the previous instance ID and its recorded namespace when available. Remove unscoped engine INFO messages. - Map Kubernetes cleanup failures to lifecycle errors, retain the Job reference when deletion is uncertain, and block unsafe replacement or restart. For unresponsive activations, report ERROR without clearing the process; retain FAILED handling for other engines. - Avoid repeating cleanup after a successful terminal-Job cleanup. Tests: - Cover namespace resolution and recording, isolated deprecated-env fallback, namespace-probe retries, deletion-watch behavior, Job and Pod deletion verification, and the analytics CSV contract. - Cover cleanup failure and recovery, unresponsive Kubernetes cleanup, both FAILED restart-policy branches, and one-time Job cleanup. - Cover first starts, prior recorded or unknown namespaces, and failed starts without a misleading success log. Backfill activation_job_namespace for pre-feature Kubernetes RulebookProcess records from the legacy execution namespace. When a legacy row is still NULL at lifecycle time, persist and use the control-plane (or deprecated legacy override) namespace instead of the current configured default. This ensures a namespace change removes the old Job before creating a replacement in the target namespace. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com>

When cleanup of a completed or failed Kubernetes Job fails,

Do not treat the backfill value as historical when the legacy override was removed before migration.
If EDA_ACTIVATION_JOB_NAMESPACE is removed before migration 0076, the migration stores the service-account namespace for every null record. This matches the pre-PR runtime choice at migration time, but it makes that choice persistent. _instance_engine then stops resolving the namespace dynamically. Restoring the old override later cannot correct these records, so cleanup can target the wrong namespace. Backfill only when the original Job namespace can be established; otherwise leave the namespace unset.

Skip namespace resolution when no processes need backfilling.
On a fresh Kubernetes deployment, this .update() evaluates legacy_activation_namespace() even if the queryset is empty. If the migration runner has no service-account namespace file, migration fails with RuntimeError. A configured EDA_CONTAINER_GROUP_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE does not prevent that failure, although the engine can use that override without the file. Check for eligible rows before resolving the legacy namespace.

Remove support for the upstream-only EDA_ACTIVATION_JOB_NAMESPACE setting. Persist the control-plane ServiceAccount namespace for activation Jobs that predate namespace-aware lifecycle handling. The configured container-group default remains the destination for new Jobs only. Keep Kubernetes processes monitorable when Job cleanup fails, preserving the recorded source namespace and Job reference for a later cleanup retry. This prevents an unsafe replacement Job from being created in a new namespace.

If cleanup fails during disable, stop() leaves the activation in ERROR and its process in STOPPING. Neither state is eligible for automatic monitoring, so cleanup never retries after Kubernetes recovers. The Job reference is preserved, but a workload that survived cleanup can keep running. Could we keep both records eligible for reconciliation until cleanup succeeds?
Move configured-namespace validation from engine construction to Job creation. Existing activation Jobs can then be monitored and cleaned up in their recorded namespace when the configured destination is inaccessible. Keep disabled activations and processes monitorable when cleanup fails, so the scheduler retries rather than leaving a surviving Job orphaned. Fold the namespace backfill into migration 0075 because neither migration has been released. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com>

The disable API sets the parent activation to STOPPING before enqueueing STOP. If cleanup fails here, that status is preserved and the request is consumed. The process remains RUNNING, so the scheduler dispatches it again, but the worker skips its STOPPING parent. Cleanup still never retries after recovery. Please keep failed Kubernetes stops eligible for reconciliation and cover the state produced by the disable API in the regression test.

What is being changed?
Phase 1 of AAP-87601 (AAP-98100): persist each activation Job’s Kubernetes namespace in the nullable
RulebookProcess.activation_job_namespacefield (schema migration0077). Use the recorded namespace for monitoring, stopping, cleanup, and logs. Why is this change needed?
Changing the worker’s namespace setting does not move an existing Job. Without its original namespace, lifecycle operations can look in the wrong place and incorrectly treat the activation as failed.
How does this address the issue?
New processes record the engine namespace when their Job is created. Lifecycle operations use that value; processes with a null value retain the legacy engine-default behavior.
Namespace resolution uses
EDA_CONTAINER_GROUP_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE, falls back to the deprecatedEDA_ACTIVATION_JOB_NAMESPACEwith a warning, then to the service-account namespace. The Kubernetes engine also checks namespace access and verifies Job deletion.Dependencies, blockers, or breaking changes
No new dependencies. This PR does not backfill existing processes or migrate running Jobs.
How was it tested?
aap-eda. One activation restart removed it and started a Running Job ineda-activations. Disabling the activation cleared Jobs and Pods from both namespaces.Note: This PR was developed with assistance from Claude AI and OpenCode (GPT-6 Sol).
