Backenly JS

Open-source client tooling for Backenly: the MCP server your coding agent talks to, the CLI for your terminal, and the JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for the app you ship.

License npm mcp-server npm cli

Backenly is a backend platform. You describe what you want, an AI agent builds it, and the platform keeps it running. This repository holds the parts you install into your own project and your own editor. The hosted platform runs at backenly.com.

Packages

Package Install What it does
@backenly/mcp-server npx @backenly/mcp-server init Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Windsurf, or Claude Desktop to your backend over MCP.
@backenly/cli npx @backenly/cli Inspect your backend, generate TypeScript types, and verify your API from the terminal.
@backenly/sdk coming soon to npm Talk to your backend from a browser or Node app: CRUD, auth, storage, realtime.

Connect your coding agent (MCP)

The MCP server is the primary way to use Backenly. It gives an AI coding agent direct, scoped access to your backend: it can read your schema, generate APIs, run migrations, and query data through a governed tool set.

npx @backenly/mcp-server init

Paste your MCP key, restart your editor, and your agent can operate the backend. Works with Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Windsurf, and Claude Desktop. See packages/mcp-server for the tool list and per-host setup.

CLI

The CLI inspects a backend and generates typed clients from your live schema.

# Link this directory to a project
npx @backenly/cli link

# Generate TypeScript types from your live schema
npx @backenly/cli types

# Show the current backend status
npx @backenly/cli status

See packages/cli for every command (schema, openapi, logs, query, diff, and more).

SDK (coming soon)

The JavaScript/TypeScript SDK lives in this repo under packages/sdk and will publish to npm as @backenly/sdk shortly. It is the typed client for the app you ship. The API it will expose:

import { BackenlyClient } from '@backenly/sdk'

const backend = new BackenlyClient({
  projectId: 'your-project-id',
  apiKey: 'your-public-api-key',
})

// Create and read rows
await backend.posts.create({ title: 'Hello', published: true })
const posts = await backend.posts.list({ filter: { published: true } })

// Auth
await backend.auth.signUp({ email: 'a@example.com', password: 'secret123' })
await backend.auth.signIn({ email: 'a@example.com', password: 'secret123' })

// Query builder for anything more specific
const recent = await backend
  .from('posts')
  .select()
  .eq('status', 'active')
  .order('created_at', { ascending: false })
  .limit(10)

Realtime, presence, and file storage are included. Until the npm release, you can build it from source in packages/sdk.
