Build status

Build WinUSB App

WinUSB Mac is a small, native SwiftUI app for turning official Windows ISO files into standard GPT/FAT32 UEFI installer USB drives. It works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 media.

Warning

Creating an installer erases the selected USB drive. Confirm the drive name and capacity before continuing, and use an expendable drive while testing.

Features

  • Native macOS interface with a focused ISO and USB selection flow.
  • Support for official Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 ISOs.
  • GPT/FAT32 UEFI installer media compatible with modern Windows PCs.
  • Automatic splitting of install.wim when it exceeds FAT32's file limit.
  • Optional Windows 11 TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirement bypass.
  • Clear copy phases, byte-based progress, and cancellation controls.
  • Universal app bundle for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
  • Bundled wimlib, with no Homebrew runtime dependency.

Getting started

You need:

  • A Mac running macOS 14 or later.
  • An official Windows 10 or Windows 11 x64 ISO.
  • A removable USB drive with enough usable capacity for the installer.

WinUSB Mac checks the selected drive before it starts and will warn you if it cannot make a safe, bootable installer with the available space.

Installation

Download the latest ZIP from GitHub Releases, unzip it, and move WinUSB.app to Applications.

Current releases are unsigned and not notarized. The first time you open the app, Control-click WinUSB.app, choose Open, then confirm the macOS prompt. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally.

Usage

  1. Open WinUSB Mac.
  2. Select your Windows ISO.
  3. Select the removable USB drive you want to erase.
  4. Optionally select Bypass Windows 11 requirements. It is off by default.
  5. Choose Next, review the confirmation, and let WinUSB Mac finish.
  6. Eject the USB drive normally before using it on a Windows PC.

Windows 11 requirement bypass

When enabled, WinUSB Mac adds an Autounattend.xml file to the created USB that bypasses the Windows Setup checks for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. It does not modify the original ISO or bypass CPU, RAM, Microsoft account, or other Windows requirements. WinUSB Mac will not replace an existing unattended setup file included with the ISO.

The app is for creating Windows installer media. It does not currently create Linux installer USB drives.

Build from source

Clone the repository, then run:

./scripts/build-app.sh
open build/WinUSB.app

The build produces a universal app bundle. To run the automated tests:

swift test

Contributing

Contributions are welcome. Please read CONTRIBUTING.md, keep changes focused, and run swift test before opening a pull request. Never use a USB drive containing data you need for destructive testing.

When filing a bug, include your macOS version, Mac architecture, the Windows ISO edition, and the relevant error message. Do not include disk identifiers, serial numbers, or personal paths in a public issue.

Security

For suspected destructive-disk safety issues, follow the private reporting guidance in SECURITY.md before opening a public issue.
