Summary

The claude-cli/ and codex/ judges started the model CLI in metareview's own working directory, which is normally the repository under review. In headless mode a CLI can still load that directory's project-level configuration without the interactive trust prompt, and disabling tools does not switch that configuration off. So judging an untrusted checkout, such as a fork's PR branch, was not isolated from it. It was found while reviewing #165. This is W0 of #167.

We verified this offline on 0.13.2, using a throwaway CLI config and a dead API endpoint so that no model was called: running metareview fsm judge --model claude-cli/… inside a repository carrying project configuration let that configuration take effect. With this change it doesn't.

Changes

  • Isolated working directory per attempt (internal/fsm/judge/isolate.go).
    • Each attempt gets a fresh, empty directory with mode 0700, under the user's own cache directory (os.UserCacheDir()/metareview/judge).
    • It is removed after the call, and removal is deferred so it holds even if the call panics.
    • It is not in a shared temp dir, because Codex walks up to a .git root and loads repo-scoped skills from it. The temp dir is only a fallback when there is no cache dir.
    • If no directory can be made, the attempt fails as a transport error and nothing is spawned.
  • Claude: --setting-sources user --strict-mcp-config --no-session-persistence. Not --bare, because that skips the keychain and with it the OAuth session.
  • Codex: --ephemeral -c project_doc_max_bytes=0. The second flag also covers the escalation path's materialized evidence tree, which is still honoured as an explicit work directory.
  • Judge calls no longer persist sessions, so a judge's full prompt and diff are no longer written into the user's session transcripts.
  • Release 0.13.3: version bumps and a CHANGELOG entry.

Validation

  • New tests in internal/fsm/judge/isolation_test.go cover:

    • a fresh, empty, private directory per attempt, outside the caller's tree and removed afterwards;
    • removal even when the call panics;
    • the new flags;
    • an explicit Codex work directory still being honoured;
    • refusing to run when no isolated directory can be made;
    • the cache-dir base and its fallback.

    Six of these fail on the pre-fix code. Two existing tests that asserted "an empty work dir inherits the caller's directory" now assert isolation.

  • make cover: unit tests, behavioural suite, shellcheck and golangci-lint v2.13.1 all pass, and the coverage gate passes at 100%.

  • Live offline probes against the real claude CLI: the judge ran in ~/Library/Caches/metareview/judge/… with the new flags, the reviewed repository's project configuration had no effect, and no transcript was written.

  • Two independent adversarial reviewers checked the change:

    • Bypasses: parent-directory discovery, inherited environment, Codex project docs, config and skills, the escalation tree, and other places that start these CLIs.
    • Regressions: anything that relied on the old working directory, flag support in the installed CLI versions, and cleanup paths.

    Everything they raised is fixed. Follow-up mr-81p: Claude still creates one empty auto-memory directory per call.

  • metareview review pr-ready --base origin/main: PASS_ADVISORY.

Note

High Risk
Touches judge CLI process spawning and working-directory semantics for untrusted checkouts; a gap in isolation or cleanup could re-expose prompt injection or repo-controlled config.

Overview
Release 0.13.3 hardens the FSM claude-cli and codex judges so they no longer start in the repository under review, where headless CLIs could load project config (hooks, CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md) without a trust prompt.

Each judge attempt now runs in a fresh, empty, private directory under the user cache (isolatedDir in isolate.go), removed after the call (including on panic). If isolation cannot be created, the attempt fails closed as a transport error and no CLI is spawned in the caller’s cwd. Claude adds --setting-sources user, --strict-mcp-config, and --no-session-persistence. Codex adds --ephemeral and -c project_doc_max_bytes=0; an explicit materialized evidence workDir is still used and not deleted.

Tests in isolation_test.go and updated codex_test.go encode the contract; version bumps and a Security changelog entry document the fix.

… repo

The claude-cli/ and codex/ judges started the model CLI in metareview's own
working directory, which is normally the repository under review. A headless
CLI still loads that directory's project configuration without the interactive
trust prompt, and disabling tools does not switch it off, so reviewing an
untrusted checkout (a fork's PR branch) was not isolated from it. Verified
offline: under 0.13.2, `fsm judge --model claude-cli/...` run inside a repo
carrying project hooks fired them; with this change it does not.

- Every attempt runs in a fresh, empty, 0700 temp dir (judge.isolatedDir),
  removed after the call; if one cannot be made the attempt fails as a
  transport error and nothing is spawned.
- claude: --setting-sources user --strict-mcp-config (not --bare, which skips
  the keychain and so the OAuth session).
- codex: -c project_doc_max_bytes=0, covering the escalation path's
  materialized tree, which is still honoured as an explicit work dir.

…sistence

From the self-review of e30a904:
- Create judge dirs under os.UserCacheDir (0700 base) instead of a shared temp
  dir: codex walks up to a .git root and loads repo-scoped skills, which on a
  multi-user host with TMPDIR unset another user could plant in /tmp. The temp
  dir remains the fallback when there is no cache dir.
- Defer the directory cleanup so a panic in the exec seam cannot leave it.
- claude --no-session-persistence and codex --ephemeral: a judge call is not a
  session, and a fresh dir per attempt would otherwise leave one transcript
  (carrying the full prompt and diff) per call. Verified offline: no .jsonl
  transcript is written.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Claude and Codex reviews now run in fresh, isolated working directories by default, which are removed after each attempt. Codex continues to use a configured working directory when provided.
    • Claude uses restricted settings and strict MCP configuration; Codex no longer loads project documentation. Both disable session persistence.
    • If an isolated directory cannot be created, the review attempt returns an error without launching the CLI.
  • Release
    • Updated the application and plugin versions to 0.13.3.

Walkthrough

Claude and default Codex judge attempts now run in fresh isolated directories that are removed after execution. Directory creation failures return transport errors without starting the CLI. The change also updates CLI options, release metadata, the changelog, and metareview records.

…fallback)

CodeRabbit on #168: the os.TempDir fallback reopened the planted .git root +
repo-scoped skills path under /tmp that the user-cache base exists to close.
Without a usable cache dir the judge attempt now fails as a transport error;
the CLI judges need $HOME for their OAuth session anyway.
