Test-first: acceptance tests in issues and skills - #1996
Makes test-first the default path: issues carry the acceptance tests, skills write those specs first and reviews check they fail without the change. The PR body records each spec path, the command, the assertion that failed first and the green run.
.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/spec.yml (issue form): Problem, Proposal and Acceptance tests are required fields, so an issue cannot be filed without acceptance tests or a No test-first: <reason> line. Acceptance tests are (given / when / then plus the spec file). Optional Out of scope. The exemption covers layout or CSS, dependency upgrades and infra config.
add-feature, add-query, add-sdk-mutation: the spec step moves to the front. Write it from the issue, run it red for the right reason (an assertion, not an import error or missing mock), then implement.
debug: first step is a failing spec that reproduces the bug through the real code path.
add-test: test-first order plus a checklist line for the red run.
add-query: test command for external-chain wallet builders (src/modules/assets/external/<chain>/).
code-review: each new or changed spec for added or fixed behaviour must fail with the source change reverted (a new file is replaced by a stub export, not deleted); tests that pin existing behaviour may stay green; a spec that stays green is a finding.
CLAUDE.md: the single package test command drops --, which ran the whole package suite. The PR rule "Include tests with changes" becomes the test-first rule.
Tests: docs and config only (No test-first: skill and template text). Checked by reading each edited skill end to end and the template's rendered sections.
• Add an issue template that defines acceptance tests and documents justified test-first exceptions.
• Make development skills require a meaningful failing spec before implementation and a passing spec
afterward.
• Require reviews to verify changed specs fail without the source change.
The following are alternative approaches to this PR:
1. Automated change-reversion checks
➕ Could enforce that new specs detect the source change without relying solely on manual review.
➖ Reverting arbitrary source changes in CI is costly and brittle, especially for cross-file changes and legitimate exemptions.
Recommendation: Use the proposed issue-to-skill-to-review workflow for now. It makes the expectation explicit without adding a brittle CI gate; consider targeted automation only if reviewers find the manual reversion check difficult to apply consistently.

SKILL.mdStart feature work with an acceptance spec+22/-20
Start feature work with an acceptance spec
• Moves spec guidance ahead of feature implementation and requires an assertion-level failing run before coding. Carries forward web spec placement and mocking guidance, and asks the PR to report the red-first run or exemption.
SKILL.mdPut query-builder specs before builders+26/-24
Put query-builder specs before builders
• Makes query-key, response, error, and enabled-guard specs the first step. Moves package-specific spec placement and single-spec commands into that step, with a requirement to confirm a meaningful failure.
SKILL.mdSpecify SDK mutation behavior before writing hooks+7/-4
Specify SDK mutation behavior before writing hooks
• Adds a failing-spec step for mutation payloads, cache updates, and invalidations before hook implementation. Documents exceptions for forwarding-only hooks and requires red-first evidence in the PR.
SKILL.mdRequire a meaningful red run when adding web specs+3/-0
Require a meaningful red run when adding web specs
• Directs authors to write specs from issue acceptance tests before implementation. Adds a checklist item confirming the initial failure was a behavioral assertion.
SKILL.mdCheck that changed specs detect their source changes+6/-0
Check that changed specs detect their source changes
• Instructs reviewers to run each new or changed spec with only the corresponding source change temporarily removed. A spec that remains green is a bug finding; the guidance also calls for safe restoration and documented exemptions.
SKILL.mdReproduce bugs with a failing spec before fixing them+4/-0
Reproduce bugs with a failing spec before fixing them
• Makes a spec using the report's real input and code path the first debugging step. Allows documented manual reproduction when a browser-only or live-node issue cannot be captured by a spec.
CLAUDE.mdMake test-first the repository PR rule+3/-1
Make test-first the repository PR rule
• Replaces the general instruction to include tests with an issue-driven red-to-green spec requirement. Requires the PR to state that the spec failed first or repeat the issue's exemption.
spec.mdAdd a test-first feature and bug issue template+33/-0
Add a test-first feature and bug issue template
• Introduces Problem, Proposal, Acceptance tests, and Out of scope sections. Acceptance items use given/when/then behavior and a spec path, with a documented no-test-first alternative.
The code-review checklist requires reverting source changes and confirming that specs fail, but it
never requires the PR to document how each spec was checked on the base and head branches. Reviewers
therefore cannot rely on the PR record to verify the branch outcomes for new or changed specs.
+- **Each new or changed spec must fail without the change.** Check it: revert only the+ source part of the diff (keep the spec), run the spec and confirm it goes red for the+ behaviour it names, then restore. For a new guard, delete just the guard. A spec that+ stays green only exercises the path where the change does nothing: flag it as `BUG`.+ Restore from a copy of the file, never `git checkout -- <file>`, which drops+ uncommitted work. A change with no spec needs the issue's `No test-first: <reason>`.
Evidence
The checklist requires the code-review skill to include both branch outcomes and a requirement that
the PR document how verification was performed. The changed checklist describes the source-reverted
red run and restoration, but contains no instruction to record the verification method or results in
the PR.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The code-review checklist describes how to test specs against reverted source changes but does not require the PR to explain the verification results, including that the spec fails on the base branch and passes on the head branch.
## Fix Focus Areas
- .claude/skills/code-review/SKILL.md[88-93]
## Recommended Fix
Add an explicit checklist item requiring the PR description to state how every new or changed spec was verified: it fails against the base/source-reverted change for the expected assertion and passes on the head branch. Keep the existing instructions about restoring files safely.

2. Wallet query specs miss external chains✓ Resolved
Description
The package test command in add-query always targets src/modules/wallets/queries/.spec.ts, even
though the skill also directs external-chain builders into src/modules/assets/external//.
Following this instruction for a BTC, ETH, BNB or SOL query points Vitest at a nonexistent spec
path, so the intended focused test cannot run.
+pnpm --filter @ecency/sdk test src/modules/<domain>/queries/get-<entity>-query-options.spec.ts+pnpm --filter @ecency/wallets test src/modules/wallets/queries/<name>.spec.ts+```
Evidence
The wallet Vitest configuration collects specs recursively, but the repository’s external-chain
query builders are not under the path used by the new command.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The wallet package command always uses `src/modules/wallets/queries/<name>.spec.ts`, but external-chain query builders live directly under `src/modules/assets/external/<chain>/`, so contributors receive an invalid focused-test path for those builders.
### Fix Focus Areas
- .claude/skills/add-query/SKILL.md[30-37]
- packages/wallets/vitest.config.ts[1-20]
### Recommended Fix
Add a separate command example for external-chain specs using the actual `src/modules/assets/external/<chain>/<name>.spec.ts` location, while retaining the wallet-level command for builders under `src/modules/wallets/queries/`.

3. Package tests can ignore the requested file✓ Resolved
Description
The new add-query guidance says never to place -- before a package test path and claims that
doing so runs the whole suite. This contradicts the repository’s package-test convention, which
invokes pnpm --filter @ecency/sdk test -- path/to/test.spec.ts, so contributors following the
skill may use a less reliable command than the one documented elsewhere.
+**Never add `--` before the path.** pnpm forwards it to vitest as a passthrough separator+rather than a file filter, so the whole package suite runs instead of the one spec.
Evidence
The changed skill explicitly forbids the separator, while the repository’s central package-test
instructions use that separator for a focused SDK spec; both package scripts invoke Vitest directly.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The new skill forbids the `--` separator for package test paths, while the repository’s existing package-test instructions use it explicitly. This creates conflicting guidance about how to run one package spec and makes the new claim about the full suite unreliable.
### Fix Focus Areas
- .claude/skills/add-query/SKILL.md[34-40]
- CLAUDE.md[100-110]
### Recommended Fix
Use the repository-standard `pnpm --filter <package> test -- <spec-path>` form consistently, or verify the exact pnpm/Vitest behavior and update both documents to one tested command and explanation.

4. New issues carry a fake acceptance test✓ Resolved
Description
The visible placeholder Given ..., when ..., then ... remains outside the HTML comment in the new
issue template, so GitHub renders it as an unchecked task in every issue created from the template.
Contributors who leave it in place give the test-first workflow a literal nonexistent spec
obligation alongside their real acceptance tests.
The template explains that each acceptance-test line becomes a spec, but its example line is
rendered outside the comment; the project guidance then instructs contributors to write specs from
that issue list.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The acceptance-test placeholder is outside the template’s HTML comment, so it is rendered as a real unchecked checklist item whenever a new issue is opened. That placeholder can be mistaken for an acceptance requirement and conflicts with the documented rule that issue acceptance entries become specs.
### Fix Focus Areas
- .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/spec.md[14-29]
- CLAUDE.md[244-246]
### Recommended Fix
Move the placeholder checklist line inside the existing HTML comment, or remove it and leave only the commented example so newly created issues contain no fake acceptance-test task.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds test-first instructions to the spec issue template, contributor skills, and general contribution guidance. It also adds requirements for verifying failing specs, reporting exceptions, and checking specs during review.
The spec issue template adds acceptance-test fields. General contribution guidance requires writing specs before code and reporting the test-first process or a No test-first reason.
ecency/vision-mobile#3605 — Requests test-first issue template and skill guidance for the mobile repository; this pull request adds corresponding guidance for the web repository.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #1995 has no active coding requirements. Its acceptance tests cover documentation only: the issue template, the add-feature, add-query, add-sdk-mutation, add-test, debug and code-review skills, and the test-first rule. The issue states that the change is docs-only. The reviewed head implements these requirements as follows. (1) .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/spec.md contains the Problem, Proposal, Acceptance tests and Out of scope sections. The Acceptance tests section uses given/when/then lines with a Spec: path. It requires the first bug test to use the real input. It offers No test-first: <reason> for layout or CSS, dependency upgrades and infra config. (2) .claude/skills/code-review/SKILL.md requires each new or changed spec to fail when the source change is reverted. It marks a green spec as BUG and requires No test-first: <reason> for changes without a spec. (3) CLAUDE.md replaces 'Include tests with changes' with the test-first rule. The step-1 spec changes in add-feature, add-query, add-sdk-mutation, add-test and debug were assessed from the whole-PR change summary. The skill files themselves were not read in this review.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files are documentation or agent-guidance files: the issue template, five .claude skill files and CLAUDE.md. Each change applies the test-first requirement from #1995. The CLAUDE.md edit replaces the PR rule with the test-first rule, which governs the same workflow. It is a supporting change, not an unrelated one. No code, configuration or unrelated guidance changes were identified in the summary. The reviewed head code-review and CLAUDE.md diffs and the rendered template contain no content outside the issue's scope. Step-order edits in the add-feature, add-query, add-sdk-mutation, add-test and debug skills were assessed from the change summary, not from a full file read.
