bench: the 2026-10-26 corpus follow-ups (WebKit, 2 MiB, 2/8 vCPU, prefetch) and the harness fixes they needed - #1347
Runs the measurements listed in #1173 and fixes the harness defects they hit. Bench tooling and records only: nothing here ships in fcvm or fc-agent, and no CI or release gate reads these files.
Stacked on:#1340 (bench/issue-1159-ceiling; this branch contains its commits, and the sampler fix and the replay options come from there).
Measured (results/campaign-20261026-extras/, REVIEW.md section "Follow-ups from the 2026-10-22 corpus campaign, run 2026-10-26")
item
result
WebKit corpus, 4 vCPUs
cdp 1,689 ms [1,649, 1,729], cdp-fast 1,683 [1,640, 1,720], noop 61.6; 0 failures in 230 per arm, DNS clean
Serial, third run at 2 and 8 vCPUs
2: 815.5 ms [620, 848] (10-22: 805.3, 777.0). 8: 537.7 [465, 592] (10-22: 704.6, 671.6; different Chromium and fcvm build, so not a repeat of those)
2 MiB pages, minor / copy / minor on one hugepage golden
412.3 / 377.4 / 398.2 ms; the 4 KiB comparison is a different golden, so page size is not separated
Third prefetch on/off pair
582.3 vs 776.7 ms (+33%; 10-22: +35%)
Memory per clone, screenshot, 2 and 8 vCPUs
cgroup 300 [230, 380] and 290 [230, 380] MiB (4 vCPUs: 340); PSS 230 and 250 (240)
Memory, HTML extraction, 2 and 8 vCPUs
not published: the harness's own 2x cross-basis gate refused both (2.05x and 2.37x at N=2)
Open-loop throughput, 2 and 8 vCPUs
run with --tls-handshake-in-handler; 8 vCPUs passes 1.4 per path, 2.8 and 4.2 are failed rates (1 and 6 failed requests); 2 vCPUs completes 4.2 at 512 ms median navigation with 4 failures; no ceiling is read above that (the 5.6 failures are harness limits, see #1340)
Not done: the end-to-end reqscale.py -> analyzer test from #1173 was already merged in #1293; the two scale runs above are not analysis-passing above 1.4, so the 2 and 8 vCPU throughput ceilings stay open; the HTML-memory refusals at 2 and 8 vCPUs are unexplained.
Harness fixes (each with a test that fails without it)
reqbench.py: wait_clone_endpoint. fcvm saves a restored clone's state before it allocates the loopback IP, so find_state returned a state with every address null and each WebKit request failed "no usable host-side IP" (4 of 4 arms). Tests: CloneEndpointWait (4).
reqbench.sh diag + cdpdrive.py: a request the page cancelled before the network service began sending it no longer counts as a request naming no address (Chromium 156, www.elmundo.es, failed 3 of 5 corpus diags). The exemption is evidence-based after review (Codex P1 and CodeRabbit on bench: the corpus open-loop ceiling is the replay server's accept thread and listen backlog #1340 and here: missing timing proves nothing): trace rows now carry sent_to_network (a requestWillBeSentExtraInfo event was seen), and only a cancelled row with sent_to_network false is exempt; a cancelled request that was sent, or a row that does not say, still has to name an address. Tests: test_a_row_says_whether_the_network_service_began_sending_it, test_a_request_cancelled_before_the_network_service_sent_it_is_not_an_escape (red on the previous code). Checked against the real case on a fresh golden (diag only, 14 pages x 3 clones): the 3 cancelled tinypass iframe requests on www.elmundo.es all had sent_to_network false, and the diag passed.
wddrive.py: a readiness poll landing on the old document's unload ("no such window: Callback was not called before the unload event") is retried, bounded by the deadline; it failed 27 of 880 WebKit requests. Tests: 3 in test_wddrive.py.
corpus_extra.sh: passes CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS to the replay server it starts (the memory phase's 48-clone pass failed behind the default listener). Test: ReplayListenerOptions.
Evidence
$ make test-chromium
Ran 1267 tests in 371.952s
OK
Red checks were run on the previous source for each test above.
Navigation readiness checks now retry transient errors during document unload and report a timeout if readiness is not reached in time.
Network diagnostics more accurately distinguish canceled requests that were sent to the network from those that were not.
Benchmarking
Corpus server launches can now receive additional configured arguments.
Added benchmark results covering memory, scaling, serial runs, and WebKit comparisons, along with notes on harness limitations and unpublished results.
fcvm saves a restored clone's state with its owner PID before it allocates the
loopback IP and configures the network. On a restored WebKit golden the first save
had loopback_ip, host_ip and guest_ip null and the address followed 15 ms later.
find_state returns on the first save, so run_cdp_request and the noop arm called
clone_cdp_endpoint on it and every request failed with 'no usable host-side IP in
network config' (2026-10-26 WebKit corpus run: 4 of 4 arms, first request).
wait_clone_endpoint re-reads the state when the state directory changes until it
names an address, bounded by the request deadline and by the clone process exiting.
Tests: CloneEndpointWait (4); they fail on the previous reqbench.py with
AttributeError.
…n escape
Chromium 156 renders www.elmundo.es with an iframe document request that the page
cancels 3 ms after it starts (net::ERR_ABORTED, remote_ip empty, timing null, no
status). The diag counted it as a traced request naming no remote address and failed
3 of 5 corpus diags on 2026-10-26 (1 of ~210 traced requests each), so no campaign
got past it. A cancelled request with no timing never left the browser. One that
had started connecting still has to name an address.
Test: test_a_request_the_page_cancelled_before_any_network_timing_is_not_an_escape
(fails on the previous reqbench.sh with one no_remote_ip violation).
…nload
navigate() polls document.readyState over execute/sync right after issuing the
navigation. The poll can land on the unload of the document being navigated away
from, and WebKitWebDriver answers 'no such window: Callback was not called before
the unload event.' That is the swap the poll waits for. It failed 27 of 880 requests
(3.1%; cdp 20, cdp-fast 7) in the first WebKit corpus run, on pages from
example.com to the Guardian, so the run was refused as having dropped requests.
navigate() now continues polling on that message only, bounded by the existing
deadline; every other error still propagates.
Tests: test_wddrive (3 new); the retry test fails on the previous wddrive.py with the
WdError.
… them
HostSampleSource.capture read the leaves one after another and refused the run when a
pid appeared in two. guardexec enters a request's leaf as the request starts, so a pid
read in the driver leaf could be read in the file leaf a moment later. It stopped the
2026-10-26 base run at burst 5 and the backlog run at burst 12 of 18 with 'pid N appears
in both driver and file leaf cgroups'. A process is in one cgroup at a time; capture now
reads every leaf again (up to 5 passes) and refuses only a pid that stays in two.
Tests: ContinuousAccounting (2); the mid-move case fails on the previous reqscale.py with
MeasurementInvalid, a pid that stays in two leaves is still refused.
The memory phase's 48-clone pass at 2 guest vCPUs failed on 2026-10-26 (a clone could
not render www.elmundo.es inside its local deadline) while 48 guests fetched through a
replay that accepts, and runs the TLS handshake, in one thread behind a listen queue of
5. corpus_campaign.sh already takes CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS (--backlog N,
--tls-handshake-in-handler); corpus_extra.sh now does too, word-split, none by default.
Test: ReplayListenerOptions (fails on the previous corpus_extra.sh).
…erial runs at 2 and 8 vCPUs, memory and throughput at 2 and 8, third prefetch pair (#1173)
results/campaign-20261026-extras/: summary.json (arm medians with bootstrap intervals per run, memory fits,
scale cells), commands.txt, and the two scale runs' replay listener logs. REVIEW.md gets the results table
with what is not published (HTML-extraction memory at 2 and 8 vCPUs refused by the 2x cross-basis gate; scale runs
above 1.4 per path not analysis-passing) and the harness defects found.
This change records additional corpus campaign results and findings. It also updates replay-server argument forwarding, network request diagnostics, and WebDriver navigation readiness polling.
Changes: Corpus Campaign Follow-ups
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Replay server option forwarding bench/chromium/corpus_extra.sh, bench/chromium/test_corpus_mem.py
The replay-server launch forwards CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS and additional positional arguments. Tests check the forwarded arguments.
Network trace and request diagnostics bench/chromium/cdpdrive.py, bench/chromium/reqbench.sh, bench/chromium/test_net_trace.py, bench/chromium/test_reqbench.py
Request records include whether network transmission was observed. The diagnostic exempts canceled requests without a remote IP only when the trace explicitly marks them as not sent. Tests cover event ordering and sent, unsent, and unknown cases.
Navigation retries the specified unload-related polling error until readiness succeeds or the deadline expires. Other polling errors propagate. Tests cover these outcomes.
Benchmark results and campaign notes bench/chromium/results/campaign-20261026-extras/summary.json, bench/chromium/REVIEW.md
The results file records memory, scaling, and serial runs. The review notes report campaign outcomes, harness findings, rejected HTML memory results, throughput runs that did not pass analysis gates, and remaining limits.
ejc3/fcvm#1340 — This PR forwards CORPUS_SERVE_ARGS in the replay-server launch and adds tests for that forwarding.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f6492
This change only touches benchmark tooling and records, so nothing ships in the product. The replay-IP diagnostic can still pass a canceled request whose destination was never checked, which weakens the benchmark's evidence. The REVIEW.md ledger also misdescribes one throughput result. Fix the diagnostic's missing-event handling before relying on its output.

Explanation
The title names the bench-only changes: the 2026-10-26 corpus follow-up measurements (WebKit, 2 MiB pages, 2/8 vCPU, prefetch) and the harness fixes they required. The raw summary and objectives confirm the changeset is mainly bench/chromium measurement results plus harness fixes in wddrive.py, cdpdrive.py, reqbench.sh, and corpus_extra.sh, with matching tests. The title is specific and accurate, though long at 109 characters and 17 words.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files are bench scripts, harness code, harness tests, and benchmark records. The clone readiness, network-trace, WebKit readiness, replay-listener, and sampler changes support the measurements requested by #1173. The recorded results and validation tests are also connected to that work. No unrelated product, CI, or release-gate changes are shown.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR documents the requested WebKit, 2 MiB hugepage, memory, throughput, serial, and prefetch follow-up work for #1173. It also documents the related harness fixes and tests. The PR states that the required end-to-end reqscale.py to reqscale_analyze.py test was merged in #1293, but the supplied whole-PR evidence does not establish that this test is present at the reviewed head. A reference to another pull request is not sufficient evidence.
Resolution
Provide reviewable evidence at the reviewed head that the #1173 end-to-end scale test exists and covers the requested fake-fcvm and analyzer path. Otherwise, add or restore that test.

… service never began sending it
Codex and CodeRabbit (#1340): a missing timing does not show a cancelled request never left the browser,
because remote_ip and timing both come from responseReceived. cdpdrive's net trace rows now carry
sent_to_network (a Network.requestWillBeSentExtraInfo event was seen), and the diag exempts a cancelled
row with no address only when sent_to_network is false; a cancelled request the network service had begun
sending, or a row from a trace without the field, must still name an address.
Tests: test_a_row_says_whether_the_network_service_began_sending_it (test_net_trace) and
test_a_request_cancelled_before_the_network_service_sent_it_is_not_an_escape (the exempt case passes; the
'sent' and 'unknown' cases fail the diag). The reqbench test fails on the previous reqbench.sh/cdpdrive.py.
…fore its requestWillBeSent
CDP allows the sending event first; the row was then created with sent_to_network false and the diag
exempted a cancelled request the network service had begun sending (Codex, #1347). Early events are
remembered by request id and applied when the row is created.
Test: test_a_sending_event_that_arrives_before_the_request_is_announced_counts (fails on the previous cdpdrive.py).
