fix(events): use post_content as the single source for event descriptions - #376
Makes post_content the single source of truth for event descriptions:
Eventyay imports (both the repository upsert and the admin importer): the description is saved to post_content only. On update, a stored excerpt is cleared only when it is an import-era copy of the description (it matches the old content or the incoming description); a hand-written excerpt is preserved, so existing events are fixed without a re-import.
Frontend Overview: reads the description from post_content; a stored excerpt no longer overrides it and remains only as a last-resort fallback for events with no content.
Edit Event modal: the Description field now submits as content and is loaded from the card's data-description, which now carries post_content. The AJAX handlers save to post_content (the legacy excerpt request field is still accepted as a fallback) and clear a legacy excerpt that merely copies the description.
Event cards and calendar export: card teasers are derived from post_content when the stored excerpt is just a copy, and calendar descriptions prefer post_content.
Note: I became aware of #371 while preparing this. This implementation was developed independently from the issue text, and I am opening it as an alternative for comparison. Happy to close this if the maintainers prefer to proceed with #371.
Validation: phpcs is clean on all changed files, phpstan (project configuration, level 6) reports no errors, php -l is clean and the JS passes a syntax check. Added unit tests for the modal description field resolution in EventHandlerDescriptionTest. The PHPUnit suite needs the WordPress test environment, so it is left to CI.
Summary by Sourcery
Use post_content as the single source of truth for event descriptions throughout the application.
Bug Fixes:
Make post_content the canonical source for event descriptions across imports, editing, frontend rendering, event cards, and calendar exports.
Prevent legacy excerpts that duplicate descriptions from overriding updated event content while preserving hand-written excerpts.
Enhancements:
Update event creation and editing to submit and validate descriptions through the content field, while retaining legacy excerpt request compatibility.
Add coverage for canonical and legacy description field resolution.
Tests:
Add unit tests covering description resolution from the canonical content field, legacy excerpt fallback, and empty submissions.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Event descriptions are now consistently saved and displayed from the main description field, including when events are created, edited, or imported.
Events with blank descriptions can no longer be created or updated; markup without visible text is treated as blank.
Existing custom excerpts are preserved, while excerpts that duplicate the description are cleared.
Event cards continue to show a concise description preview when no lead text is available.
This PR makes post_content the canonical source for event descriptions across Eventyay imports, AJAX editing, frontend rendering, cards, and calendar exports, while maintaining compatibility with legacy excerpt requests and preserving genuinely hand-written excerpts.

Event descriptions now use post_content for form submissions, imports, and display selection. Legacy excerpt input remains accepted when content is absent. Existing excerpts are preserved unless they duplicate event content.
Changes: Event Description Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Event form submission and storage public/partials/events/event-modal.php, public/js/wpfaevent-events.js, admin/partials/ajax-handlers/class-wpfaevent-event-handler.php, tests/unit/EventHandlerDescriptionTest.php
Create and edit forms submit descriptions as content. The handler accepts legacy excerpt input when content is absent, stores descriptions in post_content, and clears only duplicate excerpts. Tests cover content precedence and legacy fallback.
Imports leave new excerpts empty. They clear existing excerpts only when those excerpts match stored or incoming event content.
Description selection and event cards includes/class-wpfaevent-calendar.php, includes/helpers/class-wpfaevent-event-template-controller.php, public/partials/events/event-card.php
Calendar and template description selection now prioritizes post_content. Event cards use post_content for description data and generate a plain-text teaser when the excerpt duplicates the content and no lead text exists.
This change moves event descriptions to the main post content, but some paths are not yet aligned. The Overview can keep showing the old imported description after an edit. Events created with the previous form can open in the editor with an empty description. Password-protected events can have their full description exposed through the public calendar and event cards. Existing importer tests will also fail. These issues should be fixed before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The pull request satisfies the coding requirements in [#369]. The Eventyay repository and admin importer write descriptions to post_content and set or clear post_excerpt only for detected copied values. The AJAX handlers resolve content first, retain excerpt as a legacy fallback, and save the resolved value to post_content. The modal submits content, and event loading uses post_content. The Overview and calendar description paths prefer post_content, while the excerpt remains a fallback. The implementation preserves hand-written excerpts and supports existing events without a required re-import. EventHandlerDescriptionTest covers canonical, legacy, and empty description resolution.

**Legacy events cannot be edited**
When an existing event has an empty `post_content` and its description only in `post_excerpt`, `event-card.php` puts only `post_content` in `data-description`, so the edit modal submits an empty description and `ajax_update_event()` rejects it; users cannot edit the event without re-entering its description.
Use `post_excerpt` as a fallback for `data-description` when `post_content` is empty.

**Cached clients cannot submit events**
When a browser or intermediary serves the previously cached `wpfaevent-events.js` after the updated modal markup is served, the previously cached script still looks for an `excerpt` form field, but the updated modal submits `content`; its client-side required-field check therefore rejects both create and edit submissions before sending the AJAX request, so users cannot save events.
Bump the events script cache version when changing its form-field contract, or otherwise ensure deployments invalidate cached copies of the script.

**Event cards show stale descriptions**
When an event’s `post_content` changes while its copied excerpt remains unchanged, `event-card.php` uses `get_the_excerpt()` when the excerpt no longer matches `post_content`, so the card teaser continues showing the old description instead of the edited one.
Build the card teaser from the canonical `post_content` rather than falling back to a stale copied excerpt.

**Overview shows stale descriptions**
When an event has nonempty imported `about_section_content` and its description is edited, `get_event_template_data()` only assigns `post_content` when `$about_content` is empty, so the imported value remains and the Overview continues showing the old description.
Use the canonical `post_content` for the Overview instead of retaining stale imported `about_section_content`.

**Handwritten excerpts are discarded**
When a manually authored excerpt happens to equal the incoming description while the existing content differs, the equality check against the incoming description clears `post_excerpt` even when it was deliberately written by an editor and happens to match that description. The stored excerpt is lost, and long excerpts can be replaced in card previews by WordPress’s automatically trimmed excerpt.
Only clear an excerpt when its copy provenance is established, rather than clearing it solely because it matches the incoming description.

**Missing-field messages stay untranslated**
When a user submits the add or edit form without a description, when the description is blank, the handlers and modal validation expose the raw `content` field key in user-facing errors; the surrounding message is translated, but this field name is not, so users see an untranslated label.
Use a translated human-readable label such as `Description` in the user-facing errors instead of exposing the `content` field key.

Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 5 findings to address first, and an update can replace an event’s stored description, and may clear an excerpt identified as a duplicate; reverting the code would not restore values already changed. The affected event records are limited and can be corrected, though the prior text may need to be recovered manually.

Slash the description before saving the post.
Both save paths pass an unslashed $description to a WordPress post API. If an admin enters a literal backslash, such as in C:\Users or \d, WordPress can remove it from the stored post_content. Pass wp_slash( $description ) as post_content in both arrays. WordPress documents this requirement for post content. (developer.wordpress.org)

Do not treat the submitted description as proof of a legacy excerpt.
The incoming-description comparison is intentional for legacy edits because the old handler saved excerpt while post_content could remain stale. However, it cannot distinguish that case from a hand-written excerpt that happens to equal the new description. The condition can therefore delete a hand-written excerpt.
This deletion can change the past-events card. That template renders a retained excerpt as-is, but generates a new auto-excerpt after post_excerpt is cleared. For long descriptions, the displayed teaser can change or become truncated.
Use explicit provenance or another migration-safe rule to identify legacy copies. Comparing only with the old content would avoid this deletion but would miss legacy copies with stale content.

Update the legacy-excerpt detection around $existing_excerpt so matching the
submitted $description alone never causes post_excerpt to be cleared. Use
explicit provenance or another migration-safe rule that still recognizes legacy
copies when post_content is stale, and preserve hand-written excerpts that
merely match the new description.

Gate password-protected event descriptions in calendar exports and cards.
Published password-protected events pass is_post_publicly_viewable(), which does not check the post password. This PR moves post_content ahead of post_excerpt in the calendar description lookup, so an event with a public excerpt now exports its full description. The event card also writes raw post_content into data-description and into its teaser without a password check. Empty-excerpt events already exported post_content before this PR. The PR extends that exposure to events with excerpts and adds the card path.

Gate password-protected events in get_event_description and the event-card
description flow before reading or emitting post_content. Use the post password
check so protected events expose no description in calendar exports,
data-description, or teasers; leave public-event behavior unchanged.

Give post_content precedence over dashboard content.
When about_section_content is present, this condition skips post_content. An edit saved through either event editor can therefore leave the Overview showing stale dashboard content. JSONAPIParserTest::test_event_template_uses_edited_excerpt_before_stale_about_content covers this case and will fail. Use dashboard content only as a fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clear copied excerpts before content edits make them differ.
If an imported event has matching content and excerpt, a WordPress editor can change post_content without changing the excerpt. This condition then fails, and get_the_excerpt() displays the old description on the card. Clear identified copied excerpts before that edit, while preserving unrelated excerpts.

Update the event content-edit flow identified by the event excerpt/content
comparison so it clears the excerpt before `post_content` changes when that
excerpt matched the previous content. Preserve excerpts that were independently
written, and ensure event cards no longer fall back to a stale copied
description after an edit.

Preserve descriptions created by the legacy modal.
The previous create form stored its description in post_excerpt and left post_content empty. The edit modal reads this card attribute, so those events now open with a blank required description. The previous edit handler could also leave a newer description in the excerpt while content remained stale. Migrate identifiable legacy descriptions or provide a safe fallback before switching readers, without overwriting hand-written excerpts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the event-card description attribute to preserve legacy descriptions from
post_excerpt when post_content is empty or identified as stale, while retaining
current post_content otherwise; only use excerpts when they can be identified as
legacy descriptions so hand-written excerpts are not overwritten.

Search the rendered description text.
filterEvents() searches this attribute as a literal string. With post_content such as <strong>open</strong> source, a search for open source no longer matches. Supply plain text for search separately from the HTML needed by the editor. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fixes #369
Makes
post_contentthe single source of truth for event descriptions:post_contentonly. On update, a stored excerpt is cleared only when it is an import-era copy of the description (it matches the old content or the incoming description); a hand-written excerpt is preserved, so existing events are fixed without a re-import.post_content; a stored excerpt no longer overrides it and remains only as a last-resort fallback for events with no content.contentand is loaded from the card'sdata-description, which now carriespost_content. The AJAX handlers save topost_content(the legacyexcerptrequest field is still accepted as a fallback) and clear a legacy excerpt that merely copies the description.post_contentwhen the stored excerpt is just a copy, and calendar descriptions preferpost_content.Note: I became aware of #371 while preparing this. This implementation was developed independently from the issue text, and I am opening it as an alternative for comparison. Happy to close this if the maintainers prefer to proceed with #371.
