Summary

Allow learning_to_simulate.render_rollout to save a rollout animation as a GIF instead of requiring an interactive Matplotlib window.

The current renderer only calls plt.show(). In headless or non-interactive environments this can result in no visible animation and the Matplotlib warning that the animation was deleted without rendering, as reported in #354.

This change:

  • adds an optional --output_path flag
  • saves the animation with Matplotlib's Pillow writer when a GIF path is supplied
  • retains the existing interactive plt.show() behaviour when no output path is supplied
  • validates the .gif extension
  • documents the headless usage in the Learning to Simulate README

Fixes #354.

Validation

The final branch is based directly on current upstream master and contains one commit (f70ea322049f422e7b24a44bea61de422d0cc2e8).

The final diff changes only:

  • learning_to_simulate/render_rollout.py
  • learning_to_simulate/README.md

A full legacy Learning to Simulate runtime was not available in this execution environment, so no end-to-end animation rendering test is claimed.

Could a maintainer review the option to save Learning to Simulate rollout animations and arrange a fresh approved workflow run? The previous security run ended with no jobs after 30 days, which looks like expired approval.
