Picking another definitions file should keep the plan and Apply action tied to that selection. A slower response for an earlier file could overwrite both.

I moved the planning callbacks onto read.mutate, as suggested in the issue, so only the latest selection can update the plan, file, or error. The regression tests cover late successes and failures, preserve a newer error, and verify the exact file sent to Apply.

The full frontend suite passes with 100% coverage. TypeScript, lint, dependency checks, the production build, make test, and make lint also pass. I also checked the two-file flow in the browser.

Fixes #423

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Import results now stay aligned with the latest selected file, even when earlier file reads or planning requests finish later.
    • If planning the latest file fails, its error is shown and an outdated plan cannot be applied. Applying a plan uses the current file contents and confirmation choices.
    • Closing and reopening the dialog during an import preserves the in-progress results; otherwise, reopening clears stale results and notices.

Summary by Gitar

  • Dialog reopening:
    • Reopening the import dialog clears the stale plan, outcome, and notice unless an import is still applying
  • File field locking:
    • Disables the definitions file input while an import applies
  • Apply behavior:
    • Apply sends the file and confirmations captured when it is pressed

This will update automatically on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

The import dialog now handles out-of-order file-read responses, passes the current file and confirmations to Apply, and manages displayed state when the dialog closes or reopens during an import.

Changes: Definition Import

Layer / File(s) Summary
File-read state and latest plan
frontend/src/content/ImportDefinitions.tsx, frontend/src/test/definitions-import.test.tsx
File-read callbacks update the plan and notice for each read request. Tests cover out-of-order responses and verify the latest file and confirmations are submitted.
Apply inputs and pending state
frontend/src/content/ImportDefinitions.tsx, frontend/src/test/definitions-import.test.tsx
Apply receives the current file text and confirmations. The file input is disabled during apply. Tests cover file selection and apply timing.
Dialog reopening and stale state
frontend/src/content/ImportDefinitions.tsx, frontend/src/test/definitions-import.test.tsx
The dialog records whether it closed during a pending apply and conditionally resets state on opening. Tests cover closing, late plan responses, and apply results around reopening.

Explanation

Issue [#423] requires the latest selected definitions file to control the shown plan and the file sent to Apply. ImportDefinitions.tsx attaches success and error handlers to each read.mutate call. An earlier response cannot replace the latest plan, file, or error. Apply sends the captured file and confirmed values. The regression tests cover late success, late error, and the exact file sent to Apply.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The fix and related regression tests are in scope for [#423]. The PR also resets read, apply, plan, outcome, and notice state when the dialog reopens. It hides plans that answer after close and disables the file input while Apply runs. These behaviors are not required by [#423]. The tests explicitly cover these additional dialog lifecycle and file-locking behaviors.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated dialog lifecycle and file-locking changes and their tests, or link an active issue that requires them.

Thanks for this.

I rebased your branch on main and pushed a few commits on top so we can merge it, you don't need to do anything further, I will take care of the rest.

  • Added a test that a removal ticked on the latest plan goes out only with the latest file.
  • Dropped the plan reset in the planning error handler, since picking a file already clears the plan.
  • The file field now stays locked while an import applies. A new pick can no longer hide how that import ended or start a second import beside it.
  • Apply now sends the file and the ticks of the plan on screen, even when it is pressed the moment that plan shows.
  • The dialog now opens fresh each time. An earlier plan, a plan that answers while the dialog is closed, and the last Done or error no longer come back. An import that is still applying keeps its place.

Code Review ✅ Approved 1 closed / 1 findings

🔴 High risk · Binding Apply to the selected file and confirmations changes import payloads; an incorrect pairing could create, remove, or alter stored definitions.

Keeps the plan, Apply action, and errors tied to the most recently selected definitions file, so slower responses for earlier files can no longer overwrite them. Reopening the import dialog now preserves the outcome of an import that ended while it was closed, addressing the finding where it was wiped. No open issues found.

✅ 1 closed
✅ Edge Case: Reopening wipes the outcome of an import that ended while closed

📄 frontend/src/content/ImportDefinitions.tsx:278-287 📄 frontend/src/content/ImportDefinitions.tsx:253-260
opening() only keeps the dialog's state while perform.isPending. Suppose the admin presses Apply, closes the dialog while the request is in flight, and reopens it after the request has settled. perform is no longer pending, so perform.reset(), setOutcome(null) and setNotice('') run before the admin ever sees the result. On success the applied/skipped summary is lost. On failure the server error and the warning "The site may already hold part of this file. Import it again to see what is left." are lost too, so nothing tells the admin that the site may now hold a partial import. The new tests only reopen while the import is still pending (line 233) or after its ending was already shown (line 369), so neither covers this path.

Fix: track whether the current ending has been seen. Set a flag when perform settles while open is false, and skip the reset on the next opening() when it is set. Add a test that closes during Apply, releases the gate, then reopens and expects the ending to be shown.
