Closes #574

What

  • gophenberg server:install -dry-run, run as root, checks a Linux server, then prints each step a server install would take and the full text of every file it would write. It changes nothing and asks nothing.
  • Each check stops with the reason and says that nothing changed: root, Ubuntu 24.04 (Debian 12 and 13 are accepted with a note that they are not yet tested), systemd 251 or newer that can set up the service's sandbox, enough memory and disk, TCP 80, TCP 443, UDP 443 and the site's port free, no PostgreSQL, Caddy or Gophenberg service it did not install, an install root whose parent folders only root can write and that holds none of root's own folders, and a domain that points at this server and not at a loopback address.
  • The files it prints: the Gophenberg service and its rollback service, the Caddy site, its settings and the maintenance page, the site's .env, the gophenberg command on the path, and the apt source, key, pin and automatic security updates line for Caddy's own repository.
  • -web-server none is for a server that already runs its own web server. It leaves out the checks for ports 80 and 443, the Caddy check and the domain check, writes no Caddy files, and prints the lines that send the domain to the site for nginx, Caddy, Traefik and Apache, with a body limit as large as the largest upload the site takes. The choice is kept in server.env, and a later run that asks for the other one is refused.
  • Settings come from flags, the environment and /etc/gophenberg/server.env. The server: commands read no .env file, and every program they start gets an environment built from nothing, in a session of its own.
  • server:install without -dry-run stops and says that it only checks the server for now.

Why

A command that runs as root on a server has to stop before it changes anything on a server it cannot run on, and the person running it should be able to read every file it would write before they trust it.

Testing Instructions

  1. Run make cover GOTESTFLAGS=-race. The checks and the dry run run over a fake machine, in server-install.feature and the installer's own tests, so nothing touches the host.
  2. On a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 server with a domain pointing at it, run sudo ./gophenberg server:install -dry-run -domain example.com and read the steps and files it prints. Nothing on the server changes.
  3. Run it as a plain user, or with something already listening on port 80, and see it stop with the reason.
  4. With nginx already on port 80, run sudo ./gophenberg server:install -dry-run -domain example.com -web-server none. It passes, writes no Caddy file and prints the lines for nginx, Caddy, Traefik and Apache.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a server:install command with dry-run mode to check server readiness and preview planned steps and files without making changes.
    • Supports Caddy setup or configuration guidance for an existing web server, including nginx, Apache, Caddy, and Traefik.
    • Server checks cover supported Linux systems, systemd, memory and disk space, ports, domain reachability, and installation conflicts.
    • Added server configuration options, defaults, and validation guidance.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Server commands no longer load the site’s .env file; other commands continue to use it.
    • Upload limits now include multipart request overhead.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded self-hosting guides with server:install requirements, settings, flags, and reverse-proxy guidance.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds server:install with server-settings loading, ordered machine checks, and dry-run installation planning. It generates service and web-server configuration files, documents Caddy and external web-server modes, and adds unit and feature tests for the command and installer flow.

Changes: Server install

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command registration and settings
cmd/gophenberg/main.go, internal/app/*, internal/installer/settings.go, internal/installer/record.go, internal/installer/site_env.go
Registers server:install, maps its flags to an installer request, and skips .env loading for server-prefixed commands. Adds settings precedence and validation, install-record handling, and site .env read and write behavior. Tests cover command mapping, configuration, records, and environment handling.
Machine operations and preflight checks
internal/installer/machine.go, internal/installer/runner.go, internal/installer/*checks*.go, internal/installer/domain_check.go
Adds injectable and real machine operations, restricted command execution, and ordered checks for root access, supported systems, systemd, resources, ports, install paths, existing components, and domain reachability.
Install plan and generated files
internal/installer/install.go, internal/installer/steps.go, internal/installer/files.go, internal/installer/templates/*
Adds the install workflow and dry-run plan. The plan varies with recorded install progress and web-server mode. File templates cover service and rollback units, command execution, Caddy setup, maintenance output, and package sources.
External web-server mode and upload limits
internal/installer/templates/web-server-*, internal/installer/web_server_internal_test.go, internal/server/media.go, internal/server/themes.go, internal/updater/backup_test.go
Adds nginx, Apache, Caddy, and Traefik proxy configurations for -web-server none. Exports and reuses UploadEnvelope for upload-body limits. Adds tests for proxy output and the installer’s database address in backup handling.
Documentation and end-to-end scenarios
docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/*, test/features/features/server-install.feature, internal/installer/server_install_steps_internal_test.go
Documents command flags, settings, checks, dry-run output, and web-server modes. Adds feature scenarios and a test harness for install outcomes, generated files, and server changes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Check a Linux server before installing Gophenberg" matches the main change: a root-run server:install -dry-run that checks Linux server prerequisites (supported distributions, systemd, resources, ports, install-root permissions, domain) before installation. It is concise, specific, and not vague. The actual installation is deferred, which the title does not contradict, since the command stops after checks without -dry-run.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #574 is directly linked and has coding requirements. The PR adds server:install -dry-run, settings precedence and validation, root and Linux/systemd/resource/port/software/install-root/domain checks, dry-run step and file-content output, server.env handling, environment isolation, configurable timing and floor values, and non-dry-run refusal. The added unit, integration, and feature tests cover these behaviors. The summary also establishes the -web-server none behavior and supported Debian notes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #574. Documentation and tests describe or verify the installer. UploadEnvelope supports installer upload-cap configuration. The related backup test verifies the installer database address in an existing backup path. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 39.53% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 344 functions across 35 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Remove the reason from this docblock and from similar docblocks.

The ReadsDotEnv docblock ends with "since root runs them". That clause states why, not what. The same pattern appears in other new docblocks:

  • checkRoot in internal/installer/checks.go: "since the steps after the checks change the whole server".
  • answerAsIs in internal/installer/machine.go: "so a page comes from the address asked for and no other".
  • maxMegabytes in internal/installer/settings.go: "so that a floor counted in bytes never overflows".
  • trustedFolders in internal/installer/fresh_checks.go: "so the site's user must never own one".

Keep only the statement of what each declaration does.

♻️ Example
-// ReadsDotEnv reports whether the command args name reads .env, which no server: command does, since root runs them.
+// ReadsDotEnv reports whether the command args name reads .env, which no server: command does.

As per path instructions: "A docblock starts with the name of what it documents, and states WHAT that thing does and never how or why."

This section is empty.

### Functions ¶

#### func ClientIP ¶ added in v0.2.0

    func ClientIP(r *http.Request) string

ClientIP returns the request's canonical client IP for rate limiting.

#### func Middleware ¶

    func Middleware(cfg Config) func(http.Handler) http.Handler

Middleware returns middleware that limits failed login attempts per client IP.

#### func ParseTrustedProxies ¶

    func ParseTrustedProxies(raw string) ([]string, error)

ParseTrustedProxies parses a comma-separated list into trusted-proxy CIDR ranges.

#### func ResolveClientIP ¶ added in v0.2.0

    func ResolveClientIP(trustedProxies []string) func(http.Handler) http.Handler

ResolveClientIP returns middleware recording the request's client IP under the trusted proxy rules.

RealIP | Deprecated — vulnerable to IP spoofing; use ClientIPFromXFF or another ClientIPFrom* middleware

The legacy RealIP middleware is deprecated — it is vulnerable to IP spoofing (GHSA-3fxj-6jh8-hvhx, GHSA-rjr7-jggh-pgcp, GHSA-9g5q-2w5x-hmxf) and mutates `r.RemoteAddr`. Use one of the four `ClientIPFrom*` middlewares instead — pick exactly one based on your network setup — and read the resulting IP with GetClientIP (string) or GetClientIPAddr (`netip.Addr`):

Your setup | Use
--- | ---
Directly on the public internet, no proxy | `middleware.ClientIPFromRemoteAddr`
Behind nginx (`X-Real-IP`), Cloudflare (`CF-Connecting-IP`), Apache (`X-Client-IP`) | `middleware.ClientIPFromHeader("<your-trusted-header>")`
Behind one or more proxies whose IP ranges you can list | `middleware.ClientIPFromXFF("10.0.0.0/8", ...)`
Behind a known, fixed number of proxies with dynamic IPs | `middleware.ClientIPFromXFFTrustedProxies(2)`

    r := chi.NewRouter()
    r.Use(middleware.RequestID)

Set X-Forwarded-For to $remote_addr, as the Apache block does.

$proxy_add_x_forwarded_for appends a visitor-supplied address. Because the application trusts the Nginx peer, the rate limiter skips Nginx's address and can use the visitor-supplied address as its key. A visitor can therefore bypass per-IP login limits by changing that address.

Review comment at @internal/installer/templates/web-server-nginx.conf at line 7:
Update the X-Forwarded-For directive in the Nginx template to use $remote_addr
instead of $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for, so the header contains only the visitor
address received by Nginx.

[Medium impact] The previously reported port conflict is addressed, and no outstanding findings block merging.

Summary

Adds server:install checks and a dry run that previews installation steps and files without installing anything.

  • Root operators can preview a Gophenberg server setup before any files are changed.
  • Operators can keep their web server and get proxy examples sized for site uploads.

No outstanding findings remain. The reviewed changes are safe to merge.

🟡 Medium risk · Even in dry-run, the root-run installer briefly serves and fetches a domain-check token over port 80, potentially contacting unintended DNS targets.

Adds gophenberg server:install -dry-run to check a Linux server and print the steps and files a full install would write, changing nothing on the host. The previously flagged failure when changing the domain on a later run while Caddy holds port 80 is now resolved.

✅ 1 closed
✅ Edge Case: Changing the domain on a later run fails when Caddy already holds port 80

📄 internal/installer/domain_check.go:41-49 📄 internal/installer/domain_check.go:107-112 📄 internal/installer/fresh_checks.go:66-76
On a later run the record owns caddy, so checkPorts skips TCP 80 because the Caddy we installed is expected to hold it. skipsDomain only skips the domain check when the domain matches record.Domain. So when the operator passes a new -domain on a server whose public address isn't on a network card (NAT or a cloud floating IP, which makes it a foreign address), serveToken calls Listen("tcp", ":80"), gets EADDRINUSE from our own Caddy, and stops with "cannot listen on TCP port 80…". The only way past this is -skip-domain-check. The test TestTheDomainCheckRunsForADomainOtherThanTheOneTheRecordNames passes only because the fake server leaves port 80 free. One fix: when the record owns Caddy and port 80 is busy, serve the token through Caddy, or skip the check with a clear note that says so. Also add a scenario where an earlier run installed Caddy and the domain changes.
