Keep kitty uploads out of frames and cut text book memory - #24
Measured on a 4-core Debian 13 machine, with 200×55 cells of 8×16 pixels and 2000×3000 scanned pages:

Bubble Tea copies each frame string into its buffer, copies it three more times per flush and parses every changed line twice. Frames now carry a short APC marker for each kitty upload, and the terminal writer splices the upload back in. A marker stays the same while its upload does, so Bubble Tea still skips the unchanged line. The writer and its synchronized-output framing move from main.go into the ui package.
Half-block webtoon frames were composed at the terminal's full pixel size and then shrunk to one pixel per cell across. ComposeWebtoon now takes the size of one frame pixel and builds the same layout at that size. Narrow pages keep their on-screen size.
Every render of a rotated page copied the whole page again, twice for JPEG pages. The two latest rotations stay cached, which covers a spread, two panes or the pages of a webtoon frame. Recycling a frame drops its rotations.
Laid-out text kept every shaped glyph as an 80-byte shaping.Glyph, but painting and selection read only six of its fields. Pages now keep those six in 24 bytes, and the painter takes each glyph's ink bounds from its outline. Page rasters stay byte-identical, checked on a mixed-script EPUB with Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, CJK, ruby and combining marks.
System fallback font collections now load only their first face. The faces of Noto Sans CJK and of the macOS and Windows collections cover the same characters, and each parsed face copied the shared tables: about 200 MB for Noto Sans CJK, paid by every text book. A font set with CBZR_EPUB_FALLBACK_FONT keeps all its faces.
Confidence Score: 5/5
The changes since the last review appear safe to merge.
Summary
This PR reduces terminal rendering work and text-book memory use.
Kitty uploads stay out of Bubble Tea's frame copies.
Half-block webtoon frames use only the pixels they can show.
Rotated pages reuse recent turns instead of copying pixels.
EPUB books keep less font and glyph data in memory.
Since the last review, the code rounds coarse frame heights down to preserve the full column count and documents the rotation cache’s source-image requirement. No new actionable issues were found.
Bubble Tea copies each frame into its buffer, copies it three more
times per flush and parses every changed line twice. With a page upload
of a few megabytes in the frame, a flush took about 12 ms and 12 MB.
The frame now carries a short APC marker for each upload, and the
terminal writer splices the upload in. The writer moves into the ui
package, next to the frames it writes.
Half-block cells show one pixel across, but webtoon frames were built at
the terminal's full pixel size and then shrunk. ComposeWebtoon takes the
size of one viewport pixel and keeps the same layout at the smaller
size, which cuts a frame from 25 ms to under 1 ms.
Every render of a rotated page, from a pan step to a webtoon frame,
copied the whole page again, twice for JPEG pages. The two latest
rotations stay cached; a pooled frame drops its rotation when it is
recycled.
Laid-out pages kept every shaped glyph as an 80-byte shaping.Glyph, and
painting and selection read six of its fields. Pages now keep those six
in 24 bytes and take a glyph's ink bounds from its outline when they
paint; rasters stay byte for byte the same.
System fallback font collections load only their first face. The faces
of Noto Sans CJK and the macOS and Windows collections are regional or
metric variants of the same characters, and each parsed face copied the
shared tables, about 200 MB for Noto Sans CJK.
A 2,874-page FB2 now keeps 124 MB instead of 500 MB with Noto Sans CJK
installed.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Webtoon pages can now be scaled to match terminal pixel dimensions, including narrow pages.
Bug Fixes
Improved EPUB text and glyph rendering, including font collection handling, ruby annotations, and glyph outlines.
Fixed stale image data appearing after recycled images are rotated.
Improved terminal image output by reusing recent uploads and keeping frame updates synchronized.
This pull request updates EPUB font parsing and glyph rendering, adds rotation-result caching and webtoon pixel-unit scaling, and changes terminal image uploads to use frame markers that are expanded when output is written.
Changes: EPUB font and glyph handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Limit parsed font faces internal/book/epub_font.go, internal/book/epub_font_test.go, internal/book/epub_layout_test.go
Fallback and bundled font parsing now accept a face limit. Tests check parsing one face from a font collection.
Store EPUB shaping data internal/book/epub_layout.go, internal/book/select.go, internal/book/epub_layout_test.go, internal/book/epub_font_test.go
Layout copies run metrics and glyph data into explicit fields. Bounds, fit checks, ruby calculations, and text selection use those fields.
Rasterize from glyph outlines internal/book/epub_render.go
Rendering skips glyphs without drawable outlines and calculates raster bounds from outline segments.
Rotation cache
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Cache and invalidate rotations internal/render/transform.go, internal/render/render.go, internal/render/transform_test.go
Rotation reuses cached results and obtains buffers through the RGBA pool. Recycling an image clears matching cache entries. Tests cover reuse and invalidation.
ComposeWebtoon accepts a unit that scales viewport dimensions and caps page scale. UI and macOS call sites pass the new argument, and tests check scaled output.
Terminal image uploads
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Collect uploads as frame markers internal/ui/output.go, internal/ui/ui.go, internal/ui/ui_test.go, internal/ui/performance_test.go, internal/ui/output_test.go
The model collects image uploads in a registry and places markers in frame output. Tests check marker retention and frame handling.
Substitute uploads when writing frames internal/ui/output.go, main.go, main_test.go
Output.Write substitutes registered upload data for terminated markers and wraps frame output in synchronized-update sequences. The application passes this writer to Bubble Tea.

1735-1735: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The upload is retained while the delayed frame is written.
Bubble Tea holds its renderer mutex during Output.Write. The event loop calls p.renderer.write(model.View()), so one later View can advance retention, but the next View cannot run until the earlier flush releases the mutex. begin retains the upload for that one later frame. The reported loss after two later View calls is not reachable.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
If src has a non-comparable concrete type, the first rotation caches it and the next lookup panics at r.src == src. image.Image does not require a comparable implementation. Skip identity caching for non-comparable sources.
