Patch dependencies and fix sixel, solid RAR and search edge cases - #27
Go 1.26.4 and the x/image and x/text versions in go.mod have known vulnerabilities, and CI builds the release binaries with the Go version go.mod names. This moves to Go 1.26.10, x/image 0.45 and x/text 0.41. Before the update, a crafted lossless WebP page could make the decoder allocate without bound, and invalid UTF-8 in EPUB text could make normalization loop forever.
Other fixes:
Cell counts round up for fractional cell sizes. Sizes taken from the window size can be fractional, and the old rounding gave a sixel image one row too few, which could put it on the bottom row and scroll the screen.
The startup probe waits up to two seconds for the device attributes instead of stopping after eight reads, so a reply that arrives in many pieces no longer leaks into the reader as keys.
Reaching a page in a solid RAR may decode at most 100 times the archive's size on disk, all volumes counted, or 1 GiB for small archives. Images barely compress, so real archives stay far below that, and a large file before a page, such as a bonus video, still lets the reader through. Junk hidden before the pages stops early.
A page request that ends stops a solid RAR decode and leaves the reader where it is. Jumping back no longer waits for the page you left, and the next page continues from there.
Closing a book no longer waits for a solid RAR decode in progress, which could hold up the reader for seconds on a malformed archive.
PDF search drops the zero-width characters and soft hyphens hidden in words, as selection does.
Closing a book drops its cached search text, which for a PDF held the whole extracted text until exit. The cache stays while the other pane reads the same file.
Screenshot names keep titles up to 56 characters, so letters of four bytes and a five-digit page number stay within the 255-byte limit.
Confidence Score: 5/5
The changes since the previous review appear safe to merge.
Summary
The PR updates dependencies and fixes solid RAR reads, sixel sizing, PDF search, search-cache cleanup, and screenshot names.
Since the previous review, it strengthens TestRARCloseDoesNotWaitForTheDecoder:
Solid RAR pages stop decoding when requests end or exceed a byte budget.
Builds use patched Go and x package versions.
The renderer counts fractional screen cells without clipping sixel images.
The terminal probe waits for replies that arrive in pieces.
PDF search ignores invisible marks inside words.
Closing a book releases its cached search text when unused.
Screenshot names leave room for long Unicode titles and page numbers.
The browser's owner check keeps the same access rules.
No new actionable issues were found. The earlier cancellation-budget finding is addressed: canceled requests keep their decoded-byte count until the solid reader restarts.
Go 1.26.4 has security bugs fixed in later 1.26 releases, and CI builds
the release binaries with the version go.mod names. x/image 0.45 stops a
crafted lossless WebP page from allocating without bound, and x/text
0.41 stops normalization from looping forever on invalid UTF-8 in EPUB
text.
Cell sizes taken from the window size can be fractional, and the old
rounding then counted one row too few for a sixel image, which could put
it on the bottom row and scroll the screen. Cell counts now round up.
The startup probe stopped after eight reads. A slow link can deliver a
reply in more pieces than that, which missed sixel support and left the
rest of the reply to be read as keys. The probe now waits up to two
seconds.
Files that a solid RAR page decodes on its way now obey the 64 MiB page
limit, so a small archive cannot hide gigabytes of junk before its
pages. A page request that ends stops the decode and leaves the reader
where it is: jumping back no longer waits for a page nobody needs, and
the next page continues from there.
Search drops the zero-width characters and soft hyphens that PDFs hide
in words, as selection does, so such words match again.
Search caches page text by file, and closing a book left its entries,
which for a PDF kept the whole extracted text in memory until exit.
Closing a book now drops them unless the other pane reads the same file.
Screenshot names keep titles up to 56 characters instead of 60, so
letters of four bytes and a five-digit page number stay within 255
bytes.
The owner filter's tests only connected as the same user, so removing
the check would have kept them passing. A test now marks a connection
as another user's and expects the filter to close it, and a tcp6
fixture covers clients with IPv4-mapped addresses.

A 64 MiB cap on each skipped file made every page after a large file
unreadable, such as a bonus video or an oversized scan. Instead, one
pass of the solid reader may decode at most 100 times the archive's
packed size, or 1 GiB for small archives. Images barely compress, so
real archives stay far below that, while junk hidden before the pages
stops early, also in prefetches that no request cancels.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Replace the switch on an error value with errors.Is.
golangci-lint (errorlint) reports this switch. io.CopyN returns an unwrapped io.EOF, so behavior is correct today. The check still fails lint and breaks if a reader wraps its errors. Use errors.Is to keep the lint run clean.
Proposed fix
- switch _, err = io.CopyN(io.Discard, r, maxSkipBytes+1); err {- case io.EOF:+ _, err = io.CopyN(io.Discard, r, maxSkipBytes+1)+ switch {+ case errors.Is(err, io.EOF):
err = nil
- case nil:+ case err == nil:
err = fmt.Errorf("a file before %q exceeds %d bytes", e.f.Name, maxSkipBytes)
}

A decode that ended in an error while its request was canceled kept the
solid reader. After some errors, rardecode leaves that reader unusable,
and the next page panicked. Only the request's own cancellation keeps
the reader now.
The decode budget comes from the archive's size on disk instead of the
packed sizes in its headers, which a hostile archive could inflate.
The budget counted only the first volume of a split archive, so a split
solid comic with ordinary images ran out partway: one with 1.2 GiB in
5 MiB volumes got 1 GiB. It now adds up the size of every volume that
listing the archive opens.
Close no longer waits for a decode in progress. Reads stop at their
next check, but rardecode's Next decodes whatever packed data a file
holds past its declared size without one, which froze the reader while
it closed a malformed archive. The reader now closes in the background
once that decode ends.
