Adds a registry shorthand for orcareplay, an npm-published CLI (Apache-2.0, Node 20+).

backends = ["npm:orcareplay"]
bins = ["orca"]
description = "Record an AI agent run at its model-provider boundary and replay it offline, with no provider call and no API key"
test = { cmd = "orca --version", expected = "{{version}}" }
version_order = "semver"

Shape copied from registry/prettier.toml. The one thing worth pointing at during review: the binary is orca, not orcareplay, which is why bins is set explicitly rather than defaulted.

orca --version prints the bare version (0.2.4), so expected = "{{version}}" matches exactly — verified locally rather than assumed.

What the tool does

It records an AI agent's run at the HTTP boundary between the agent and its model provider — from outside the process, nothing installed into the agent — and can serve that recording back so the same run happens again with no provider called:

$ orca record claude -- claude -p "fix the failing test"
$ orca replay last
info replay.done reused=6/6 exact=6 divergences=0 exit=0

Why this arrived here specifically

I had opened this as a Dev Container feature at devcontainers-extra/features#243. That maintainer closed it the same day while scoping their project down to core features, and made the point that specific tools belong in mise/uv/the Dockerfile rather than as per-tool features. That is a fair point and this is me taking their advice, not shopping the same submission around — mentioning it so the provenance is visible.

Disclosure: I maintain the package.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the orcareplay package to the registry under the orca command.
    • Added package metadata, including its description, version ordering, and installation verification.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

The registry entry itself appears sound, but the repository’s required GitHub star-count disclosure must be added before merging.

Summary

  • Uses semantic version ordering.
  • Adds an orca --version installation test.
  • Follows the established shape of existing npm registry entries.
  • The PR description still needs the repository-required GitHub star count.

P2 Popularity Count Missing

This adds a new registry tool, but the PR description does not include its GitHub star count. That violates the repository requirement for new registry tools and must be addressed before merging.

Rule Used: What: new registry tools must include the github star popularity count in PR description Why: tools that are not popular will be rejected (source)

OrcaReplay is an open-source record-and-replay engine designed for AI agents, allowing developers to record, replay, debug, and fork agent executions [1][2]. It is developed by the team at OrcaRouter (Continuum AI Corp) and is licensed under the Apache-2.0 license [3][1][2]. The project is hosted on GitHub at the following URL: https://github.com/Continuum-AI-Corp/OrcaReplay [1][4][2]. Key details regarding its installation and usage include: - NPM Package: The primary CLI tool can be installed globally via npm using the command npm i -g orcareplay [5][4]. - Functionality: OrcaReplay works by capturing agent executions as replayable traces, allowing users to inspect model calls, shell commands, and disk activity [1][2]. It is agent-agnostic and model-agnostic [1]. - Prerequisites: It requires Node 20 or newer [5][3]. - Integration: It is often used as a skill or utility for AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, and others, and it supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) [3][4][2]. For additional development information, such as working with source code or contributing, you can clone the repository from GitHub: git clone https://github.com/Continuum-AI-Corp/OrcaReplay [5][4].

SAN FRANCISCO and TOKYO, Sept. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- OrcaRouter today announced OrcaReplay, a new open-source record-and-replay engine designed to make AI agents reproducible, debuggable, and easier to understand. Modern AI agents do much more than generate text. They call tools, modify files, execute shell commands, interact with APIs, browse networks, and make decisions across long-running workflows. OrcaReplay When something goes wrong, reproducing exactly what happened can be extremely difficult. OrcaReplay addresses this by capturing an agent execution as a replayable trace. Developers can inspect what the model saw, which tools were called, what changed in the environment, and where the execution diverged. From any recorded step, developers can replay the execution, debug model decisions and tool calls, or fork the run and test a different model, prompt, tool result, or decision path without restarting the entire workflow. This makes it possible to answer questions such as: → Why did the agent make this decision? → Which model or tool call caused the failure? → Can the failure be reproduced? → Would another model succeed from the exact same state? → Where did two agent runs begin to diverge? OrcaReplay is also designed for the nondeterministic nature of agent systems. Shell commands, external APIs, filesystem changes, and network responses may create side effects that cannot safely or reliably be executed again. During replay, OrcaReplay can reuse recorded outputs and captured artifacts instead of blindly repeating those actions. Developers can then explicitly choose when a fork should interact with a live environment. OrcaReplay is fully open source, agent-agnostic, and model-agnostic. Replay data can remain local, making it suitable for privacy-sensitive development, debugging, evaluation, and security workflows. The project can be used independently or together with OrcaRouter, which provides a unified API for accessing and routing across a broad catalog of frontier and open models. "AI agents need a debugger." Traditional software development has breakpoints, version control, reproducible builds, and deterministic debugging. As AI agents become increasingly autonomous, OrcaRouter believes reproducible execution will become a similarly fundamental infrastructure layer. Record the run. Replay the failure. Fork the timeline. Apply the registry popularity gate.

For a new registry/orcareplay.toml entry, AGENTS.md requires a popularity check, a project that generally has thousands of GitHub stars, and a Popularity section in the PR description. Add that data before adding the shorthand. Do not add it if it does not meet the stated bar.
