What this is

A shared BPF LSM root barrier, to replace the seccomp root barrier that #1054 requires today (validateRootSeccomp and the live Seccomp: 2 check). It stops a covered task from changing its root or its mount namespace between two exec checks. It also stops the task from changing the mount tree under its root.

It is stacked on #1067 (the common gadget library) and is standalone: it is not wired into exec or into the privilege gadget yet. GitHub can't use a fork branch as the base, so this PR targets #1054's branch and also contains #1067's commits. Please review only the last 2 commits, and merge after #1067.

  • pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/root_barrier.h: the BPF programs. The including gadget defines who is covered with ROOT_BARRIER_COVERED(task), and can report denials with ROOT_BARRIER_ON_DENY.
  • pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/rootbarrier/: Go helper for the gadget's Ready step. It attests the hooks and runs a self-test.
  • pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/: a small gadget that uses the barrier alone, with the same shape as the enforce_exec bindings map. It is the reference for how exec includes it, and it lets me test the barrier with Inspektor Gadget alone.

What it denies

Always deny. There is no mode and no policy map.

Operation Hook
chroot path_chroot
pivot_root sb_pivotroot
a new user namespace (clone, clone3, unshare) userns_create (6.1+)
clone / clone3 with CLONE_NEWNS task_alloc (it reads the clone3 flags, which seccomp cannot)
unshare(CLONE_NEWNS); setns with type 0, CLONE_NEWNS or CLONE_NEWUSER capable (CAP_SYS_ADMIN) + syscall number and arguments
mount, move_mount, umount sb_mount, move_mount, sb_umount
open_tree (clone), fsopen, fsconfig, fsmount, fspick, mount_setattr capable (CAP_SYS_ADMIN) + syscall number
any CAP_SYS_ADMIN use of a 32-bit task capable (fail closed)

I deny new user namespaces because a task gets every capability inside its own user namespace, and every other operation in the table needs a capability.

Matthias's requirements and how each is met

  • Mandatory, independent of the privilege gadget. The barrier is its own header with its own maps. It does not use arming.h or anything from the privilege gadget.

  • Attest before Ready; missing coverage refuses activation. rootbarrier.Verify runs in the operator's Ready step and checks three things:

    1. "bpf" is in the active LSM list. A BPF LSM program attaches even when BPF LSM is off, and then never runs.
    2. Each of the 8 programs has a live LSM link to its bpf_lsm_<hook>. It walks the kernel's BPF links and finds the instance's programs through the instance's counter map.
    3. A self-test covers one locked thread through a probe map. It checks that setns, chroot, pivot_root, mount, clone CLONE_NEWNS and clone CLONE_NEWUSER fail with EPERM. It also checks that the barrier itself marked each denial. Each probe is a no-op if the barrier does not deny, and the thread exits after the test.

Any failure refuses activation. There is no fallback.

  • Keep the hooks through reload and retirement. The barrier is part of the gadget instance. A replacement instance becomes Ready before the old one stops, so a reload has no gap. The test checks this.

  • Cover bound tasks and descendants. The including gadget's predicate decides. In the reference gadget, a task is covered when its cgroup or a parent cgroup (up to 16 levels) is bound. A task can move into a child cgroup it creates, and clone3(CLONE_INTO_CGROUP) starts a child in another cgroup, so an exact cgroup match is not enough.

  • Preserve earlier LSM denials. The kernel runs a BPF LSM program only when the earlier LSMs allowed the operation. Each program also returns the denial of an earlier BPF program on the same hook unchanged.

  • Allow ordinary thread creation. task_alloc denies only CLONE_NEWNS (and CLONE_NEWUSER). glibc 2.41 threads use clone3 with flags 0x3d0f00, and they work. I checked the flags with bpftrace.

  • Effective for audit-only exec policies. There is no mode bit. The barrier is an invariant, not a rule.

  • Exec keeps its own binding and lineage contract. The barrier does not choose who is covered. Exec supplies the predicate.

  • No seccomp x86_64 / default-allow constraints. Nothing in the barrier is architecture-specific beyond syscall numbers for arm64 and x86_64. Exec's own kernel and architecture qualification still applies.

The setns rule that docker exec needs

My first version denied every setns. That broke docker exec: runc joins the cgroup namespace after the mount namespace, inside the container cgroup, before it execs the command. The mount-namespace exemption of a restricted binding does not cover that step. So setns is denied only for type 0 (any type), CLONE_NEWNS and CLONE_NEWUSER. The kernel checks that a namespace file matches a nonzero type, and for a pidfd the type is the set of namespaces that the call joins.

Tests

  • Unit: the Go hook and op lists match the header, and the LSM list parser. The portability guard now also covers root_barrier/.

  • Kernel test with Inspektor Gadget alone (root_barrier/runtime/runtime_kernel_test.go, build tag root_barrier_kernel). It passes on Debian 13 (6.12 arm64) and Ubuntu 24.04 (6.8 arm64):

    • an uncovered container is not judged
    • startup with a missing hook (the chroot program disabled) is refused at Ready, and its other programs are removed
    • chroot, pivot_root, unshare -m, unshare -U, nsenter -m, setns type 0, clone3(CLONE_NEWNS), mount(2), move_mount, umount, open_tree clone and util-linux mount (fsopen) are denied, and the barrier counts each one
    • setns into a cgroup namespace still works
    • glibc threads still work
    • a task that started before the gadget is covered
    • a task moved into a child cgroup stays covered
    • reload: two overlapping instances, and a loop of unshare and chroot during the switch: none passed

No barrier program stays loaded after the test.

  • Not covered yet: 32-bit tasks, setns into a user namespace, and a denial by an earlier BPF program on the same hook.

Open questions

  • How exec consumes it from the IG fork. The exec gadget lives in the kubescape IG fork. The fork cannot include this header, and its Go owner cannot import this package (node-agent imports the fork, so that would be a module cycle). Both pieces are self-contained: one header and one small Go package. I recommend copying them into the fork (gadgets/common/, built with IG_SOURCE_PATH like here), with a drift test in node-agent that compares both copies. The other option is to move exec into node-agent first. @matthyx, your call.
  • Census of already-running tasks. With a cgroup predicate, tasks that ran before the gadget are covered with no census (tested). If exec's predicate uses its own task lineage instead, exec needs a census of the tasks already running when the binding starts.
  • A third seccomp dependency. validateSandboxShmUnprivileged also requires a live Seccomp: 2 for a sandbox shm destination. Does it depend on the root barrier too, or on something else in the seccomp profile?
  • Not wired into exec yet. The exec gadget must include the header with its predicate, and call rootbarrier.Verify in its Ready step. Then the two seccomp admission checks can go.
  • Target-system tests. I tested on arm64 lab VMs only. Please run it on your target systems too.

    • Both gadgets support managing coverage for running containers and provide denial counts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Gadget builds now fail when any listed gadget fails to build.
  • Documentation
    • Added usage guides and an example policy for the new gadgets.

…ent library

pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common is a small library for BPF LSM enforcement gadgets:
the bindings map (cgroup -> policy slot), policy rank resolution, verdict
base fields and counters, the arming rule, and the Go binding controller of
one node-wide instance. It is taken from the enforce_exec simple engine of
the pinned Inspektor Gadget fork.

pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege enforces the SandboxPolicy privilege
section with BPF LSM, no seccomp: namespaces, mounts, pivot_root/chroot,
capabilities, ptrace, modules, bpf, perf, keys, io_uring, userfaultfd,
mknod, setuid/setgid and capset. Its compiler merges several policies into
one slot per combination.

- each namespace flag of a call resolves on its own (bpf_loop), so an
allow for one flag cannot carry another flag past a default deny
- compat ptrace read-mode access is not judged
- failed arming marks are counted; a deep tree arms instead of matching a
  wrong namespace
- transient arming failures are retried and reported
- a binding whose rollback failed stays tracked for Unbind
- reject NUL in mountFsType and duplicate slot generation entries
- the gadget build loop stops on the first failure

…an enforcing slot

When an armed task forks and the child's task storage mark cannot be
allocated, the child escaped every rule while the instance stayed ready.
Now an enforcing slot (any enforce entry) refuses the fork with -ENOMEM
(a clone into another cgroup too), and counts a tracking fault per slot
in arming_faults. A lost mark at exec, which cannot be refused, is
counted the same way. Audit-only slots and unbound cgroups allow the
fork. A new thread of an armed group leader is covered through the
leader and is never refused. Moving a container to another slot arms
its running tasks again. The binding controller reads the count with
SlotFaults. A test-only parameter injects the failure for the new
kernel test.

One section-neutral vector file (policy combination to expected verdict)
and a CONTRACT doc that states the merge rule and where it differs from
the CRD text. The privilege compiler tests run the vectors. No change to
the semantics. The README documents the lost-arming handling, the child
cgroup scope and the follow-ups.

Signed-off-by: Alon Liwsky <40373481+AlonLiwsky@users.noreply.github.com>
When arming failed and the kernel entry could not be removed (or a slot
move could not be undone), the binding stayed tracked, and a retry with
the same slot returned early without arming. The controller now marks
such cgroups as unarmed, so the retry arms them.

Signed-off-by: Alon Liwsky <40373481+AlonLiwsky@users.noreply.github.com>
The gadget judges a clone by its namespace flags, so a plain fork is never
judged. A clone or clone3 rule without flags read as "deny every fork" but
did not block one. Blocking every fork is not a useful policy, so the
compiler now rejects such a rule with a clear error.

Add common/root_barrier.h: BPF LSM programs that always deny chroot,
pivot_root, new user namespaces, clone/clone3/unshare with CLONE_NEWNS,
setns into a mount or user namespace (or type 0), and mount-tree changes
for the tasks a gadget-defined predicate covers. Thread creation and setns
into other namespace types stay allowed.

Add common/rootbarrier: attestation that each barrier program has a live
LSM link and that BPF LSM is active, plus a self-test of real denials, for
the Ready step of a gadget that includes the barrier.

Add the root_barrier gadget, which uses the barrier alone with the
enforce_exec bindings shape, and an opt-in kernel test with Inspektor
Gadget alone.

- Cover child cgroups in the root_barrier gadget (a task can move into a
child cgroup, and clone3 can start a child in one) and state the
  requirement for gadget-defined predicates.
- Deny fsconfig with the other new mount API syscalls.
- Detect arm64 compat tasks from the saved pstate, not a TIF bit.
- Self-test: match the probe thread in its own PID namespace, prove each
denial through a per-operation bit in the probe entry instead of the
shared counter, send no event for probe denials, retry the probe clear,
and explain a disabled user namespace limit.
- Kernel test: child cgroup, setns type 0, open_tree clone.

pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/arming.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/bindings.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/policy.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/verdict.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/merge/*, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/README.md
Shared headers define policy ranking, task arming, cgroup bindings, and verdict reporting. The merge contract and vectors describe and test policy combination behavior.
Binding controller and existing-task arming
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/enforcement/*
The shared controller validates and manages cgroup bindings, writes and freezes policy, arms existing tasks, and reports slot faults. Tests cover startup, binding changes, retries, and validation.
Root-barrier hooks and verification
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/root_barrier.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/rootbarrier/*
The shared barrier implements BPF LSM denials and counters. Go helpers attest hook links, run probes, and read denial counters.
Privilege policy parsing and compilation
Makefile, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/Makefile, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/gadget.yaml, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/policy/*, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/examples/*, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/README.md
The policy package validates documents and compiles policy slots into kernel entries. Gadget configuration, example policy, documentation, and build targets are added. The top-level build loop now exits when a gadget build fails.
Privilege BPF evaluation and runtime wiring
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/privilege_policy.h, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/program.bpf.c, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege/runtime/*
The BPF program evaluates rules for armed tasks in bound cgroups and produces audit or enforcement outcomes. The runtime validates and writes policy and creates the shared binding controller. Tests cover policy writing, policy enforcement, and fork-mark faults.
Root-barrier gadget runtime and coverage
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/Makefile, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/gadget.yaml, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/program.bpf.c, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/runtime/*, pkg/ebpf/gadgets/root_barrier/README.md
The gadget applies shared barrier hooks to covered cgroups and reports denials. Its runtime verifies readiness and manages coverage. Kernel tests exercise denial behavior, existing tasks, child cgroups, and reloads.

Make the duplicate-generation case fail only on the duplicate.

The duplicate case in TestValidateConfig leaves slot 1 without a generation entry. validateConfig rejects the missing slot at runtime.go:75-77, so the test still passes when the duplicate check at runtime.go:69-71 is removed. The assertion also checks only that an error occurs.

Add a generation entry for slot 1. The duplicate then becomes the only violation, and the test fails if duplicate rejection is removed.

Assert that ROOT_BARRIER_OP_MAX equals opMax in TestHooksMatchHeader.

The test parses the ROOT_BARRIER_OP_MAX entry but does not compare its value with the Go opMax constant. If the C value drops to 10 while OpCompat stays at 10, the test still passes. The counters map then has no slot for OpCompat, and Denials fails when it looks up that key. Only the opt-in kernel test calls Denials, so the activation path is not affected. The current constants match, so this assertion closes a drift gap without changing current behavior.

Add a test for a task two or more levels below the container cgroup.

The subtest a task in a child cgroup stays covered moves the agent only one level below the container cgroup. The README documents coverage for descendants and for ancestors up to 16 levels above a task. A coverage walk limited to two levels still matches the container cgroup from rb-sub, so this subtest passes with that regression. Only a walk limited to one level fails it.

Create a nested child under rb-sub, move the agent into it, and assert the same thread=ok chroot=Operation not permitted unshare=Operation not permitted result. Remove the directories in reverse order.

Add a test that runs the real ArmExisting walk.

Every arming case in bindings_test.go replaces armExisting with a stub, so ArmExisting never runs there. A regression that skips eligible TIDs, or that misclassifies a host-namespace task, would not fail these tests. The kernel test in enforce_privilege/runtime/runtime_kernel_test.go binds the container, but its assertions cover only processes started after Bind. It does not check tasks that were already running.

Add a test that calls ArmExisting on a cgroup tree that contains tasks already running. Assert which TIDs get armed.

Refuse CLONE_INTO_CGROUP from armed parents on the success path too.

do_task_alloc refuses CLONE_INTO_CGROUP only when the child mark fails. When the mark succeeds, the flag is never judged. The child then resolves its binding from its destination cgroup, so a destination outside every bound subtree runs with no policy. Apply the same refusal for enforcing slots when the mark succeeds, without counting a tracking fault.

This file comes from #1067, the PR under this one. This PR only adds the root barrier (the last commits). I'll take it in #1067.

@AlonLiwsky Understood. This finding concerns code inherited from #1067, not the root-barrier changes in this PR. The finding remains open pending the fix in #1067.

Valid as a gap, but refusing every CLONE_INTO_CGROUP from armed tasks would be a rule-less deny and a design change, and it would not close the wider path: a task that can write to another cgroup's cgroup.procs leaves the bound subtree the same way. Both need write access to the host cgroup tree. For now I documented it as a known limit in #1067 (2f51eeb) and kept the behaviour; I will decide on enforcing it separately.

@AlonLiwsky Understood. My proposed blanket refusal would add a deny outside the policy rules. It would also leave the cgroup.procs migration path open.

I retract that recommendation as a required fix for this PR. The gap remains an accepted known limit, not a completed fix. The broader cgroup-migration enforcement decision belongs in the separate design work you described.

You are interacting with an AI system.

- Record a probe denial before the covered-task branch, so a probe
thread that the predicate also covers still proves the denial.
- Walk covered cgroups from the top of the hierarchy, so a task at any
depth below a covered cgroup matches.
- Refuse to cover the root cgroup.

On kernels without PIDFD_THREAD a non-leader thread has no pidfd, and the
BPF rule judges it through its group leader. The walk now arms that
leader, which can be outside the walked cgroup. A leader in the runtime
mount namespace is not armed; the walk then returns an error.

The META mode was enforce for any document in enforce mode, so a slot with
only allow entries refused a fork whose child mark failed. It is now
enforce only when an entry has the enforce deny rank, as the README says.

Handle a live thread whose group leader has exited.

On kernels without PIDFD_THREAD, a live non-leader thread whose group leader has exited is marked seen at arm_linux.go:115-116 and is not armed. The BPF coverage check does not cover that thread, and bind still reports success.

Cover the non-leader EINVAL fallback in armThreads with a test.

TestOpenLeaderOfThread calls openLeader directly, so no test reaches armThreads. Removing or bypassing the fallback at arm_linux.go:109-114 leaves the suite passing. The leader-mark write at line 122 is also unasserted.

armThreads calls unix.PidfdOpen directly. Route those calls through a package-level variable so the test can force EINVAL for the thread. The fallback then runs the real openLeader on the test process's leader. Pass a hostMntns that differs from the leader's mount namespace, so the leader is not rejected as a runtime helper. Use a fake Map that records the Put call and a temporary file that lists the thread. Assert that Put is called once with value 1. Keep the existing skip when no second thread exists.

Check every covered ancestor before returning uncovered.

The loop stops at the first mapped ancestor, from the shallowest level downward. If that entry has a nonzero ExemptMntns that matches the task's mount namespace, covered() returns false. A deeper entry that covers the task is never read. The README defines coverage per entry: a task is covered when its cgroup or any ancestor is in covered_cgroups, and the namespace exemption applies to the entry whose value matches. Overlapping entries can therefore leave a covered task uncovered. The task can then run chroot, pivot_root, and mount operations.

This case needs two overlapping entries. The current code does not create them, but the exported Cgroup API accepts them.

On kernels without PIDFD_THREAD, a leader that exits while its threads
run is a zombie: its mount namespace cannot be read, so the walk took its
threads for exited and left them unarmed. All threads share one mount
namespace, so the leader check is dropped; pidfd_open works on a zombie
leader. A thread that still runs but cannot be armed now fails the walk.
The README says which failed marks the counter counts.

Each barrier program reads the previous BPF verdict (ret) right after
the hook arguments. Attest now checks every hook's argument count in the
kernel's BTF and refuses activation when one differs, so a hook that
gains an argument cannot make the program read another argument as the
verdict. The counts are equal on 6.8 and 6.12; a unit test keeps the Go
list in step with the BPF_PROG signatures.

A kernel test attaches a program that denies chroot with EACCES, first
older and then newer than the gadget, and checks that the gadget's allow
never replaces that deny, for an unbound container and for a bound one
with an allow rule. The kernel stops at the first nonzero BPF LSM return,
so the hooks do not read the previous verdict.

Signed-off-by: Alon Liwsky <40373481+AlonLiwsky@users.noreply.github.com>
Every int LSM hook now starts with "if (ret) return ret;", as the other
enforcement gadgets do. The kernel already stops at the first nonzero
BPF LSM return; this keeps the rule explicit. ret follows the hook
arguments, so the operator checks every hook argument count in the
kernel BTF before the programs load (enforcement.CheckLSMHookArgs) and
refuses a kernel where one differs. The counts are equal on 6.8 and
6.12. A unit test keeps runtime.Hooks in step with the program.

A parent cgroup bound before its containers start (a pod cgroup) also
covered the OCI createContainer and startContainer hooks: runc init forks
them inside the container mount namespace, so they were armed and judged
as workload. A strict policy then stopped the container from starting (for
example kind's own createContainer hook, a bind mount).

A task is no longer armed at exec when its parent is unarmed, outside the
runtime mount namespace, and in the same mount namespace and cgroup as the
task: it was forked by a runtime helper inside the container. The workload
and exec commands are execed by runc init itself, whose parent is in the
runtime mount namespace, so they stay armed, and their children inherit
the mark as before. An unknown runtime namespace trusts no parent.

# Conflicts:
#	pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common/README.md
… of Linux 6.15

Linux 6.15 added `bool kernel` to the bpf hook and dropped the attr
argument of perf_event_open, so the previous-verdict check refused every
6.15+ kernel (and the old perf_event_open program would not load there).
Both programs now read `ret` at the position of the running kernel: a
CO-RE type match against security_list_options picks the branch at load.
The BTF check returns a result per hook (LSMHookArgMismatches) and
accepts both signatures for these two hooks. The other 21 hooks have the
same argument count from 6.1 to 6.18 (checked in lsm_hook_defs.h).

setns into a namespace checks CAP_SYS_ADMIN twice (the namespace user
namespace and the caller's). Audit lets the first check pass, so one
audited setns gives two identical verdicts; enforce stops at the first.
A per-syscall dedupe is not reliable in an LSM hook (there is no syscall
instance id, and a time window would merge real calls), so the README
documents it and a kernel test pins it down. The test fixture now records
the fields of each verdict.

Thanks for isolating the root barrier and testing the Ready attestation. For exec, I would keep the owner in the IG fork for now and port the small header/Go helper there with a drift test, rather than move exec into node-agent during the ongoing shared-runtime/reclamation work.

One contract change is needed before wiring: this PR says the barrier always denies even for audit-only exec policies. Our agreed audit-only contract is strictly nonblocking, including observation/tracking faults and reload; applying the barrier to audit-only bindings would violate it. Please gate the barrier to enforcement-capable exec bindings (or bring an explicit product decision before changing the contract). Exec must also retain its strict exact binding/identity scope—not inherit the reference gadget's ancestor-cgroup coverage by default. The remaining sandbox-shm seccomp check needs its own replacement analysis. I would not remove either exec seccomp prerequisite until the fork integration and target-kernel attestation are proved.

The walk repeated until a pass saw no new task id, so a container that
keeps starting short-lived tasks could fail the bind with "tasks still
changing". A pass now counts only the tasks it had to arm: a task that
already carries the mark (a child forked after its parent was armed) or
that exited is not progress. The rescan for children forked before their
parent was armed stays.
