feat(mainhandler): re-render schedules whose containers differ from the template - #476
The operator renders a recurring scan schedule from the chart's template once, when it creates the schedule. After that, only the schedule and the annotations change. So a persisted schedule keeps the containers of the chart release it was created under. A chart upgrade that changes the scheduler image or command does not reach it.
MigrateScheduleCronJobs (#447) repairs this at startup for one case only: schedules whose container args still name v1/triggerAction, that is, schedules created before kubescape/helm-charts#964. Any later template change stays out of reach.
No current chart release is affected, because the schedule templates have not changed since 1.41.0. The fix for kubescape/helm-charts#923 will change them. Schedules created under 1.41.0 run scripts/create-operator-command.sh on quay.io/kubescape/kubectl:1.36.1. kubescape/helm-charts#996 added the create-operator-command subcommand to kubescape-ops-tool, and the next chart change moves the schedule templates to it. That change also stops shipping the command-scripts ConfigMap. Without this PR, the pods of the persisted schedules then cannot start, and the recurring scans stop.
The gap is not specific to that change. Take a template change that only bumps the image, for example to a maintained kubectl image. It does not reach the persisted schedules either, and no error shows it.
This PR re-renders a schedule whenever its containers (name, image, command and args) differ from the containers of the current template. The API server defaults none of these fields, so a schedule that matches its template gets no update. A later template change, an image bump included, then reaches the persisted schedules at the next operator start. The chart then does not need an operator change for each template change.
Name, schedule, time zone, labels, annotations and the request ConfigMap stay as they are, as in #447. A template that is not installed still leaves its schedules alone. The migration now touches only the CronJobs that the operator created: their request volume points at a ConfigMap with the schedule's own name. The chart's kubescape-scheduler and kubevuln-scheduler CronJobs have the same tier label, but name that volume differently, so they stay as Helm renders them. postsToTriggerEndpoint is removed, because nothing uses it now.
The chart change that moves the schedule templates to kubescape-ops-tool will pin an operator release with this change. Then the operator restarts in the same upgrade and moves the schedules.
How to Test
go test -race ./mainhandler/:
TestMigrateScheduleCronJobsMovesScriptSchedulesToTheOpsTool: in each tier, a schedule that runs the script is re-rendered from a kubescape-ops-tool template and loses the command-scripts and tmp-dir volumes. A schedule that already runs the template's containers is not updated.
A CronJob like the chart's own scheduler, with the tier label and different containers, is not updated. Without the ownership check, this case fails.
Against a real API server (kind), with the planned kubescape-ops-tool schedule template as the example of a template change:
With the kubescape-cronjob-template ConfigMap from helm-charts 1.41.0, getCronJobTemplate and setCronJobForTriggerRequest created a schedule, as the operator does. Then the ConfigMap was changed to the kubescape-ops-tool template, and a second schedule was created from it.
MigrateScheduleCronJobs moved the 1.41.0 schedule from kubectl:1.36.1 with three volumes to kubescape-ops-tool with one volume.
The second schedule kept its resourceVersion. Thus the defaults of the API server do not make the comparison find a difference. A second run wrote nothing.
On main without this PR, the same set-up left the 1.41.0 schedule as it was. With the command-scripts ConfigMap removed, a Job from it stayed in ContainerCreating with configmap "operator-command-scripts" not found.

Bug Fixes
Schedule migrations now update jobs when their container settings differ from the installed template, including jobs that use the direct operations-tool command.
Migrated schedules retain their schedule-specific configuration.
If a migration fails for one schedule, processing continues for the remaining schedules, and the first error is reported.

The migration selects schedules with a tier template and compares their containers with the rendered template. Tests cover changed and unchanged schedules, including migration from script-based containers to the ops-tool template.
kubescape/operator#447: Introduced MigrateScheduleCronJobs, which this change extends with container comparison against the tier template.

The migration can now rewrite the pod spec of CronJobs that the operator backend did not create, including the Helm-managed scheduler, and drop settings such as priorityClassName. Add an ownership check before the pod spec is replaced.

…he template
A persisted schedule keeps the containers of the chart release it was
created under, so a chart upgrade that changes the scheduler image or
command does not reach it. MigrateScheduleCronJobs (kubescape#447) re-renders a
schedule only while its container args still name v1/triggerAction, which
covers the schedules created before kubescape/helm-charts#964 and no later
template change.
Schedules created under helm-charts 1.41.0 run
scripts/create-operator-command.sh on quay.io/kubescape/kubectl:1.36.1.
Each fix for kubescape/helm-charts#923 changes that image: a maintained
kubectl image would not reach them, and a move to kubescape-ops-tool
without the command-scripts ConfigMap would stop their pods from starting.
Re-render a schedule whenever its containers (name, image, command, args)
differ from the current template's. The API server defaults none of these
fields, so a schedule that matches its template is still left alone, and
a later template change, including an image bump, reaches the persisted
schedules on the next operator start.
Touch only the CronJobs the operator created, whose request volume points
at a ConfigMap of the schedule's own name. The chart's own scheduler
CronJobs carry the same tier label but name that volume differently, so
they keep what Helm renders.

The broader migration addresses persisted schedules that retain outdated container settings after chart upgrades. The ownership check also resolves the earlier concern about Helm-managed schedulers. No blocking issues found. Targeted migration tests passed in an isolated container; build and integration CI were still running at review time.
* feat(scheduler): run the scan schedulers on kubescape-ops-tool
The scan schedulers ran scripts/create-operator-command.sh on
quay.io/kubescape/kubectl:1.36.1, whose Photon base carries 25 critical
CVEs and can no longer be refreshed (#923). The chart's two scheduler
CronJobs and the operator's three schedule templates now run the
create-operator-command subcommand of the distroless kubescape-ops-tool
(#996), which keeps the script's flags.
kubescapeOpsTool.image moves to 0.2.0-r1, the first tag with the
subcommand. kubescapeScheduler.image, kubevulnScheduler.image and
registryScanScheduler.image are removed, as #929 did for the certgen and
rollout images. The operator-command-scripts ConfigMap, the script and
the command-scripts and tmp-dir volumes are gone.

* chore(operator): bump operator to v0.2.209
v0.2.209 includes kubescape/operator#476. At startup it re-renders the
schedules it created whose containers differ from the current template,
so they move off the removed operator-command-scripts ConfigMap.

* fix(scheduler): reject scheduler image values that would break the schedules
Addresses CodeRabbit review 5773593168.
- Fail rendering when kubescapeScheduler.image, kubevulnScheduler.image
or registryScanScheduler.image names a repository other than the old
default quay.io/kubescape/kubectl, for example a private mirror. Such
an override was silently ignored, so the scheduler pulled the public
ops-tool image instead. The old default itself is tolerated.
- Fail rendering on kubescapeOpsTool.image.tag 0.1.0-r1, which has no
create-operator-command. An upgrade from 1.41.0 with --reuse-values
keeps that default and would render schedulers that cannot run.

* test(snapshot): regenerate snapshots with CI's helm-unittest image
The earlier snapshot update used an older local helm-unittest, which
rendered the node-agent AppArmor profile and excludeJsonPaths differently
from CI. Regenerated with helmunittest/helm-unittest:latest, so only
this PR's scheduler changes remain in the snapshot diff.
