This pull request introduces support for a managed website connector feature, adds robust frontend mutations and queries for website sources, and enhances the search and connector experience, especially for website-based data sources. The most significant changes include new feature flags and environment variables, comprehensive API mutations and tests for website sources, improved search result grouping (especially for website pages), and better handling of always-connected connectors.

Managed Website Connector Feature

  • Added a new feature flag OPENRAG_URL_CONNECTOR_ENABLED to .env.example and docker-compose.yml, enabling the managed public-website connector for adding website sources via the UI and backend. [1] [2]

Website Source Mutations and API

  • Introduced useWebsiteSourceMutation.ts with mutations for creating, syncing, and deleting website sources, including cache invalidation strategies to keep UI state consistent.
  • Added comprehensive tests for useSyncWebsiteSourceMutation, ensuring that syncing a website source triggers the correct backend calls and refreshes task queries.

Search Query Enhancements for Website Pages

  • Improved useGetSearchQuery and related tests to support grouping and displaying search results by website page/document ID, preserving result modes, and using backend-provided chunk counts for website pages. [1] [2] [3]
  • Added useDocumentScopedChunksQuery and corresponding tests to merge highlights and handle chunk grouping by document ID, ensuring accurate display for website-sourced documents. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Connector Query Improvements

  • Updated connector queries to recognize and handle "always-connected" managed connectors (such as the new website connector), marking them as connected even without OAuth, and exposing this status in the UI. [1] [2] [3] [4]

These changes collectively improve support for website-based data sources, enhance the user experience for managing and searching website content, and provide a more robust and testable frontend API layer.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c7f87

Large or slow website crawls can hit the ingestion timeout. When that happens, the source stays stuck in a processing state. Page disabling can also stay blocked after an interrupted crawl. Hosts that resolve to IPv6 first may fail to crawl. These issues sit behind a feature flag that is off by default, but they should be fixed before the connector is enabled.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 37476

The new connector has meaningful protections around who can manage a source and where it can crawl. Two lifecycle gaps remain: deleting a page can race with indexing, and an interrupted crawl can leave a source unable to sync again. The demonstrated impact is principally on a user's own website content and its recoverability, rather than a demonstrated cross-user or internal-network exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Page deletion does not share the crawl's source lock. If deletion overlaps ingestion after the processor has read an unsuppressed page, indexed chunks can be written after the delete operation, contrary to the page's disabled state.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The durable source state and in-memory task lifecycle are not atomic. Cancellation or interruption before processor finalization can leave a source marked processing, blocking another sync; a task can also start before its ID is committed to the source.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An authorized user can supply website destinations for crawling and index their pages. The demonstrated deletion race affects indexed content for an owned source; no cross-owner access or private-network connection is established by the reviewed paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A crawl already processing a page can pass its suppression check, overlap the owner's page deletion, and write that page's chunks after the deletion has removed them. The resulting index can disagree with the disabled page record.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Before downloader requests, crawl middleware checks URL scope and public DNS addresses. The configured resolver returns cached validated addresses rather than performing an independent lookup; proxies are disabled. This is strong counterevidence to an asserted SSRF bypass, although external downloader behavior and deployment egress were not independently verified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Source deletion marks the source deleting before cancelling its task, and the processor checks that marker before index writes. This protects the source-deletion path, but does not serialize the separate page-deletion endpoint with indexing.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize page suppression and chunk deletion with indexing, and re-check suppression at the index-write boundary. Reconcile persisted source and page states with task termination or interruption, including the interval between task registration and database commit.

Review 3 — actionable findings against d6da4c792134.

(3a) [Major] Task startup can overwrite a completed first crawl

Problem

Creating a source schedules its crawl, then writes the original processing snapshot again. If the worker finishes before that second write, a successful source can revert to processing; after a fast failed first crawl removes its manifest, the write can recreate it with no running task. Later sync requests return 409.

Background Information

create_custom_task starts background processing immediately. The endpoint’s second manifest write has no version check.

Code References

Changed code: src/connectors/url/api.py:161-168. Related scheduler: src/services/task_service.py:555-560. Sync guard: src/connectors/url/api.py:184-188.

Potential Solution

Persist the task ID without replacing newer lifecycle fields—for example, use a version-checked partial update—and start the worker only after initialization is complete.

Alternative Solutions

Reserve a task ID before scheduling, then write it with the initial manifest. This avoids the second write but requires changing task creation.

(3b) [Major] Deleting a page during a crawl can restore it

Problem

Page deletion is permitted while the source is processing. The processor has already copied the page manifest; it can subsequently index chunks and write that stale copy over suppressed_by_user=True. A deletion that returned success can leave the page searchable again.

Background Information

The processor’s pre-index check verifies that the source still exists, not that the page remains enabled.

Code References

Changed code: src/connectors/url/api.py:225-243; src/connectors/url/processor.py:90-91,164-168,185-205,212-225.

Potential Solution

Serialize deletion with page indexing and re-read suppression state before the chunk write and final manifest update.

Alternative Solutions

Reject page deletion while a source crawl is running. This is simpler, but makes users wait to disable a page.

(3c) [Major] A failed initial state write can strand a source in processing

Problem

The API stores processing before scheduling the worker. The worker’s first manifest write is outside its crawl failure handling. If that write fails transiently, the task fails but the stored source remains processing; subsequent source and page syncs return 409 after OpenSearch recovers.

Background Information

The task service records the file-task exception but does not reconcile the source manifest.

Code References

Changed code: src/connectors/url/api.py:150-167,184-188,252-256; src/connectors/url/processor.py:93-105. Related failure handling: src/services/task_service.py:810-829.

Potential Solution

Make task termination reconcile a source left in processing, including when the processor fails before its normal finalization path.

Alternative Solutions

Allow a sync request to recover a processing source whose task is terminal. This offers an immediate retry but does not correct the stale state until another request arrives.

(3d) [Major] A nofollow seed can trigger deletion of existing child pages

Problem

On a full re-sync configured to delete removed pages, a seed that starts returning nofollow is recorded but its links are not visited. The spider still reports the crawl as complete. Reconciliation then treats every previously indexed child as removed and deletes its chunks, although those pages were never checked.

Background Information

nofollow limits discovery; it does not establish that previously discovered URLs have disappeared.

Code References

Changed code: src/connectors/url/scrapy_runner.py:241-259,286-295; src/connectors/url/processor.py:232-244.

Potential Solution

Treat discovery stopped by nofollow as non-authoritative for destructive reconciliation.

Alternative Solutions

Check each previously known child URL before deleting it. This preserves removal detection but can substantially increase re-sync requests.

(3e) [Normal] Searched source rows understate what deletion removes

Problem

After a Knowledge text search, a website source with child pages reaches its delete confirmation without web_child_count. The dialog says it will delete 0 child pages, although the API deletes the source and its actual children. The same searched row shows a chunk count derived from its single manifest hit rather than the source’s indexed chunk count.

Background Information

Wildcard rows come from /api/files and carry both counts. Text-search rows use /api/search, which does not select or return them.

Code References

Changed code: src/services/search_service.py:619-652,775-817; frontend/app/api/queries/useGetSearchQuery.ts:237-295,292-314; frontend/components/knowledge-actions-dropdown.tsx:298-308. Related source counts: src/connectors/url/projection.py:209-216.

Potential Solution

Return both projection counts in search hits and carry them through ChunkResult and File.

Alternative Solutions

Fetch the source details before opening confirmation. That gives a current count but adds a request to the deletion flow.

(3f) [Normal] Failed website deletion gives no feedback

Problem

If source deletion rejects, deleteWebsite has no error handler or toast. The confirmation dialog closes in its finally block, leaving the user without an explanation that the source remains.

Background Information

The adjacent document-deletion handler catches failures and displays an error.

Code References

Changed code: frontend/components/knowledge-actions-dropdown.tsx:85-104,154-157,298-308. Related dialog behavior: frontend/components/delete-confirmation-dialog.tsx:73-82.

Potential Solution

Handle the mutation failure in deleteWebsite and display its error; close or retain the dialog deliberately based on the outcome.

Alternative Solutions

Centralize mutation-error presentation in the confirmation dialog. This would cover other callers but expands a shared component’s contract.

(3g) [Normal] The page grid can undo disabled-last ordering

Problem

The page hook sorts disabled pages last, but passes each sliced page to AG Grid while the grid also has an active column sort. AG Grid can re-sort those rows—for example, putting disabled “Alpha” ahead of active “Beta” under ascending title—so the rendered order disagrees with the hook’s ordering.

Background Information

The hook’s tests inspect its row order, not the grid’s rendered order.

Code References

Changed code: frontend/components/website-pages/use-website-pages-table.ts:82-115; frontend/components/knowledge-data-table.tsx:55-73.

Potential Solution

Apply disabled-last ordering in the grid comparator, where the final displayed sort occurs.

Alternative Solutions

Disable AG Grid’s client-side sort and render only the hook-sorted order. That requires preserving header sort controls through the hook.

(3h) [Normal] Source-only filtering occurs after the search limit

Problem

Root Knowledge text searches discard website-page hits only after OpenSearch returns its limited, ranked hits. If page chunks fill that limit, a matching document or source below them is never returned; filtering the page hits can leave an empty result.

Background Information

The wildcard listing excludes child pages in its OpenSearch query. The text-search mode uses a separate path.

Code References

Changed code: src/api/search.py:94-109; src/services/search_service.py:619-652; frontend/app/knowledge/page.tsx:608-634.

Potential Solution

Exclude child-page records in the OpenSearch query for knowledge_sources mode, before ranking and limiting.

Alternative Solutions

Search at a larger limit and filter afterward. This reduces but cannot eliminate starvation.

(3i) [Normal] A partially failed crawl is reported as successful

Problem

When one page succeeds and another request fails, the spider reports an incomplete crawl and an error. The processor nevertheless marks the task completed, clears the source error, and advances last_successful_sync_at because at least one page succeeded. The owner receives no indication that part of the website was missed.

Background Information

The indexed-page count and crawl completeness represent different outcomes.

Code References

Changed code: src/connectors/url/processor.py:246-272,280-294; src/connectors/url/scrapy_runner.py:286-295.

Potential Solution

Preserve a partial-failure outcome and its reason while retaining successfully indexed pages.

Alternative Solutions

Mark the whole task failed whenever the crawl is incomplete. This makes failure visible but obscures the useful pages that were indexed.

(3j) [Normal] Sorting by chunks uses the wrong count for website sources

Problem

The Knowledge “Chunks” column displays a source manifest’s aggregate chunk_count, but server-side sorting orders that manifest by the number of OpenSearch records in its own document-ID bucket—normally one. A source with 80 chunks can sort alongside a one-chunk document rather than by its displayed value.

Background Information

The listing stores website chunks under page document IDs and a separate source-summary manifest ID. A query-shape smoke check confirmed the sort uses value_count(_id) while row rendering uses the manifest’s chunk_count.

Code References

Changed code: src/services/file_service_v2.py:454-463,497-499,575-581; src/connectors/url/projection.py:194-216.

Potential Solution

Sort website-source buckets using their stored aggregate count while retaining record counts for ordinary documents.

Alternative Solutions

Compute source counts from child chunks in a separate aggregation. This avoids a stored summary for sorting but makes the listing query more expensive.

Verification: 20 backend tests and 36 targeted frontend tests passed; the source sort query was exercised separately. Scrapy tests could not collect because this review environment lacks scrapy. The concurrency scenarios are code-path analyses, not live OpenSearch reproductions.

🟡 Minor · Reset filters even when the request sends none. · search_service.py:907-921

src/services/search_service.py:907-921
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reset filters even when the request sends none.

search calls set_search_filters only when filters is truthy. result_mode is now reset on every call, but filters is not. Suppose one context runs two searches, for example an agent tool loop or a test. If the first search sets web_source_ids and the second sends {}, the second search reuses the first search's filters. This defect existed before this change. The new website-scoped filters make the leak more harmful, because a later search can stay restricted to one source.

Proposed fix
- if filters:
- from auth_context import set_search_filters
-
- set_search_filters(filters)
+ from auth_context import set_search_filters
+
+ set_search_filters(filters or {})

Update the filter setup in search so it resets filters on every call; import and

frontend/app/api/queries/useGetConnectorsQuery.ts: 1

213-215: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Check always_connected before you request /connectors/{type}/status.

The status request at Lines 202-204 runs before the alwaysConnected branch, and that branch ignores the response. Each managed connector therefore adds one extra request for every connectors query. If that request rejects for a managed type, Promise.all rejects, and the whole connector list fails to load. Return the managed connector before you issue the status request.

♻️ Proposed refactor
         const connectorData = connectorsMap[type];

In the connector mapping flow, move the `alwaysConnected` check ahead of the

before making that request. Keep the status-fetch and response-handling path for
connectors that are not always connected.
