feat: SharePoint Server on-prem as a custom connector - #2460
Opt-in openrag.connectors.v1 wheel seam with operator allowlisting, encrypted write-only credentials, owner-scoped API routes, generic Settings form, and hierarchical/flat picker.
Separate SharePoint Server REST/NTLM package for explicitly configured sites, libraries, folders, and files. It does not replace the Microsoft Graph connector. Scope checks, bounded pagination/downloads, HTTPS origin allowlist and custom CA support are included.
Frontend: 738 Vitest tests passed; changed-line coverage 91.1% (threshold 80%); TypeScript typecheck passed. Node 26 test runs used NODE_OPTIONS=--no-experimental-webstorage to avoid its global localStorage collision with jsdom.
Runtime smoke: enabled installed wheel via entry-point allowlist and browsed two configured sites; opened the Settings connector card and configuration dialog in Chromium against an isolated local backend fixture.
Draft / acceptance gate
No real on-prem SharePoint farm is available in this repo. Simulated REST tests cannot certify NTLM challenge, private CA, permissions, or >500-entry pagination on a customer farm. Keep disabled in production until the non-production farm acceptance in the example README passes. The connector indexes for the OpenRAG connection owner only; it does not mirror SharePoint/AD ACLs. Legacy SharePoint REST paths containing # or % are rejected; moves/renames change path-based IDs.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for opt-in custom connectors, including configurable credentials and file browsing.
Added a SharePoint Server on-premises connector for browsing and selecting files, with folder navigation and pagination.
Added a local backend option for running the SharePoint connector.
Bug Fixes
Improved file removal handling so indexed content is removed only when a file is definitively missing.
Requests for a specific connection no longer fall back to a different connection.
Documentation
Added setup, security, deployment, testing, and rollback guidance for custom connectors and SharePoint Server.
This change adds opt-in connector plugins across backend registration, configuration APIs, and frontend settings and browsing. It also adds a separately packaged SharePoint Server NTLM connector, connection-scoped sync checks, and stricter handling of missing files.

Connector plugins and SharePoint Server
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Plugin registration and persistence src/connectors/registry.py, src/connectors/connection_manager.py, tests/unit/connectors/test_plugin_host.py, customer_connectors/README.md, Makefile
The registry loads enabled entry-point plugins after validating their contracts. Connection storage encrypts declared plugin secrets. The README and Make target describe and support plugin installation and local SharePoint on-prem startup.
Plugin configuration and API src/api/plugin_connectors.py, src/app/routes/internal.py, src/api/connectors.py, tests/unit/connectors/test_plugin_host.py, tests/unit/api/test_connectors_connector_access.py, tests/unit/api/test_connector_change_detection.py
Adds plugin defaults, test, configure, and picker endpoints. The endpoints validate requests and connection ownership, and the picker marks indexed and stale files. Plugin listing and status responses omit selected metadata, and SaaS mode excludes plugins.
SharePoint Server connector and package customer_connectors/sharepoint_onprem/pyproject.toml, customer_connectors/sharepoint_onprem/src/sharepoint_onprem/__init__.py, customer_connectors/sharepoint_onprem/tests/test_connector.py, customer_connectors/sharepoint_onprem/README.md, docs/docs/core-components/knowledge-connectors.mdx
Adds a separately packaged NTLM/REST connector with origin and scope validation, browsing, inventory, downloads, and definitive-missing checks. Documentation describes packaging, configuration, limits, and non-production acceptance checks.
Connector metadata now includes configuration fields and browse capability. Plugin connectors can use a settings dialog to load defaults, test credentials, and save configuration.
Eligible connected plugins appear in the knowledge menu and use plugin browsing without an OAuth token. The picker supports folder navigation, pagination, selection, and ingestion status.
Connection-scoped sync and duplicate checks src/api/connectors.py, tests/unit/api/test_connector_bucket_duplicates.py, tests/unit/api/test_connector_sync_response.py, tests/unit/api/test_connectors_connector_access.py
Selected syncs and duplicate checks require the specified active connection. Plugin requests that omit required selection or use unsupported filters are rejected. SharePoint duplicate checks use indexed filename aliases.
Chunk cleanup now requires FileNotFoundError. SharePoint on-prem orphan reconciliation retains candidates only when every active connection confirms the file is missing.

PoC: SharePoint Server on-prem as a custom connector
feat: SharePoint Server on-prem as a custom connector
Oct 27, 2026
Live test against a real SharePoint Server farm (NTLM)
Tested end to end against an isolated SharePoint Server Subscription Edition test farm (IIS 10, WWW-Authenticate: NTLM, HTTP only). The root site collection is OpenRAG Test, and the library OpenRAG-Documents holds 2 docs. The farm details are deliberately left out of the repo and of this comment.
The test farm has no TLS, and the connector rejected every http:// origin
Added an explicit opt-in, OPENRAG_SHAREPOINT_ALLOW_INSECURE_HTTP=true, for test farms only. HTTPS is still required by default, and README warns that this setting sends NTLM traffic and document content unencrypted.
The site lives at the root site collection (/), and site_paths could not name it (_segments rejects an empty path)
A site_paths line of / now names the root site collection. The picker shows it as "Root site".
Each library's Forms folder (AllItems.aspx, template.dotx…) appeared in the picker, and inventory picked those files up as documents
Library-root Forms is now hidden from the picker and from inventory.
The plugin card showed a "?" icon
The card falls back to the built-in icon the plugin names (CONNECTOR_ICON).
The picker header read "Add from sharepoint_onprem"
The header now uses the catalog name: "Add from SharePoint Server (NTLM)".
New unit tests: the HTTP opt-in plus root site test, a Forms folder fixture, the icon fallback, and the header name. customer_connectors tests and test_plugin_host pass (19); the Vitest run over the settings and upload pages passes (56).
Verified live
Wrong password → plugin-test returns 400 "Connector authentication failed". Valid credentials → Test returns ok, and Save works.
connections.json holds username and password only as AES-256-GCM ciphertext; no plaintext.
The picker walks Root site → 6 visible libraries → OpenRAG-Documents → 2 files. The Forms folder is hidden.
Sync of both files: task completed 2/0. Docling and embedding both succeed, the chunks are in documents with connector_type=sharepoint_onprem and owner, and source_url points at the SharePoint file. Search returns the content.
Re-ingesting from the UI shows the duplicate dialog. Choosing Overwrite re-indexes the files.
Not covered by this farm
HTTPS with a private CA, more than 500 items per library, #/% names, and nested sub-sites (see the README acceptance list). This run used a backend on the host in no-auth mode.

Treat an empty OPENRAG_SHAREPOINT_CA_BUNDLE as unset.
Compose files and .env templates often export an unset optional variable as an empty string. In that case os.environ.get(...) returns "", not None. os.path.isabs("") is false, so every authenticate() call raises "SharePoint CA bundle path must be absolute". The connector then fails even though the operator configured no private CA.

Show the API description only for plugin connectors.
connector-cards.tsx spreads every query connector into the card, and useGetConnectorsQuery sets description for every connector type. For example, Google Drive has the description "Add knowledge from Google Drive".
connector.description || therefore replaces the status text on every built-in card. The removed text includes "is connected", "is configured" and "OAuth credentials not configured yet". Users lose the explanation of why an OAuth connector cannot connect.
Limit the description override to connectors that declare configFields.

Prefix all plugin API requests with the frontend base path.
These calls use global fetch with root-relative /api/... URLs. When OPENRAG_FRONTEND_BASE_PATH is set, they bypass the configured prefix. Plugin settings, hierarchy browsing, and plugin status loading can then fail.
Apply withFrontendBasePath() to the URLs in request(), plugin-hierarchy-picker.tsx, and knowledge-dropdown.tsx, or use apiClient where its response handling fits.

Do not read BROWSE_CAPABILITY directly from type[BaseConnector].
mypy fails at Line 554 because BaseConnector does not declare BROWSE_CAPABILITY. The root cause is the same as the CONNECTOR_API_VERSION failure in src/connectors/registry.py. If BaseConnector declares the attribute, this line type-checks without change. Otherwise, use getattr.

FileNotFoundError is raised for failures that are not a deletion. This can delete indexed chunks.
ConnectorFileProcessor.process_item now deletes indexed chunks for any FileNotFoundError. The processor treats it as an "explicit missing-file signal".
This line raises it whenever _get_file_metadata_by_id returns None. That function returns None for every failure:
_make_graph_request calls raise_for_status(). A 403, 429, or 5xx response raises httpx.HTTPStatusError.
_get_file_metadata_by_id catches Exception and returns None.
_fetch_item_metadata also returns None after all fallback endpoints fail.
A transient Graph error therefore reaches the processor as "deleted at source". The processor then removes the indexed file.
Raise FileNotFoundError only when Graph returned 404 for the item. Let other errors propagate.

Read CONNECTOR_API_VERSION once through getattr.
The Lint Backend job fails at Line 92. mypy reports that type[BaseConnector] has no attribute CONNECTOR_API_VERSION. Line 91 already reads the attribute with getattr, but Line 92 reads cls.CONNECTOR_API_VERSION directly. The same root cause fails src/connectors/connection_manager.py Line 554 for BROWSE_CAPABILITY.
Choose one of these fixes:
Bind the value once with getattr and compare that local value.
Declare optional plugin attributes on BaseConnector (CONNECTOR_API_VERSION: int | None = None, BROWSE_CAPABILITY: str | None = None, CONFIG_FIELDS, CREDENTIAL_PAIR). This option also documents the v1 plugin contract in one place.

Normalize missing-object errors to FileNotFoundError in bucket connectors.
ConnectorFileProcessor performs indexed cleanup only for FileNotFoundError. S3Connector, AzureBlobConnector, and IBMCOSConnector pass provider download calls through without translating missing-object errors. A deleted object can therefore skip cleanup and leave stale chunks. Convert each provider's missing-object exception to FileNotFoundError at the get_file_content boundary. Google Drive, OneDrive, Graph SharePoint, and SharePoint on-premise already provide FileNotFoundError paths.

Review comment at @src/models/processors.py around lines 1315 - 1363:
Update get_file_content in S3Connector, AzureBlobConnector, and IBMCOSConnector
to translate provider-specific missing-object exceptions into FileNotFoundError
at the connector boundary, while allowing unrelated errors to propagate
unchanged. Preserve the existing FileNotFoundError behavior in the other
connectors.

Pass connector_type to the duplicate classifier.
_classify_connector_duplicates requires connector_type, but this test omits it. The test raises TypeError before it checks any duplicate behavior, and the backend unit-test job fails. Pass connector_type="sharepoint_onprem" in this call. The pipeline failure confirms the error.

Update the call to `_classify_connector_duplicates` in the
duplicate-classification test to pass the required `connector_type` argument as
`sharepoint_onprem`, so the test reaches its duplicate-behavior assertions.
