WalkthroughThe pull request adds a configurable 100 MiB upload limit across backend and frontend flows. Backend reads are bounded, and Docling HTTP 413 responses receive size-specific handling. Folder uploads are filtered and batched by size. Deployment settings and documentation describe the limit and separate proxy configuration. ChangesUpload Size Handling

The
file?.acceptcheck relies onuseSupportedFileTypes, not on/api/upload_options. Theacceptvalue can containmax_upload_size_mbis applied. If the fetch resolves late, the 2 MB file is checked against 100 MB and the test becomes flaky. Wait on an observable signal tied to the options response. ⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Include the proxy-limit guidance only for confirmed proxy rejections.
The 413 branch always states that a proxy in front of docling-serve set the limit. Docling Serve can also return 413 itself, so the message can mislead the operator. It also reports the size as "2.0 MB" using the uploaded byte count. This is correct, but the message does not state the effective limit, so the operator cannot tell which side to change. Soften the wording to "typically a proxy" or similar.
This is a narrow wording concern. The error type and filename handling are correct.

A failed /upload_options request was cached as the 100 MB fallback, so later uploads never saw the configured limit. Drop that cached fallback and keep a successful limit cached.

(3a) [Normal] A folder upload's shared task cannot be cancelled correctly, and a late batch revives a cancelled task
Problem
- Batches 1..n now join batch 0's task through
existing_task_id.create_custom_taskwas written for that join, but it has two gaps:- Cancel reaches only batch 0.
upload_task.background_taskis set only whenexisting_task_idis empty, so it points at batch 0's processor.cancel_taskcancels that one task. Batches 1..n keep ingesting.- Phase 3 of
cancel_taskthen marks theirPENDING/RUNNINGfilesFAILED("Task cancelled by user") and bumpsprocessed_filesandfailed_files. - Those files still finish, so their
finallyblock incrementsprocessed_filesagain. The counters drift pasttotal_filesand the UI shows files as cancelled that are in fact ingested.
- A join revives a terminal task.
- The join branch sets
upload_task.status = TaskStatus.RUNNINGwith no check of the current status. - If the user cancels while batch 1 is still uploading, batch 1 arrives, flips
CANCELLEDback toRUNNINGand ingests the files the user cancelled.
- The join branch sets
- Cancel reaches only batch 0.
- Before this change each batch was its own task, so cancel worked per batch.
Background Information
- The repo guidance is that
CANCELLEDis terminal (cancel_taskmarks it under the lock, then cancels the asyncio task outside it). The join path contradicts it. - The join path predates this PR for connector flows (
existing_task_id). It is exposed to browser users for the first time here, through a new form field.

Potential Solution
- In
create_custom_task, refuse a join when the existing task isCANCELLED/FAILED. Return the id unchanged and skip the staged files (and delete their temp files), or raise a 409 in the router. - Track every background task on the
UploadTask(a list, not one attribute) and cancel all of them incancel_task. - Add tests for cancel-after-join and join-after-cancel.
Alternative Solutions
- Revert to one task per batch and show the folder in the panel through a client-side group (a
batch_group_idon the task). This keeps task lifecycle simple and drops the new form field. - Send the folder as a single request and let the server split it into batches. This removes the client-side join, but needs a larger change.

(3b) [Minor] The shared task can report COMPLETED before later batches join; preview task ids repeat
Problem
- Batch 0 is awaited first, then batches 1..n join. If batch 0's files finish while batch 1 is still uploading,
processed_files >= total_filesis true and the task goesCOMPLETED.useGetTasksQuerystops polling once no task ispending/running. The task flips back torunningwhen batch 1 joins, but the UI polls only if something callsaddTask/refetchTasksafter the join.- A completion notification can fire early for a folder that is still ingesting.
- In preview mode every batch returns the same
taskId, sotaskIdsByBatchholds duplicate ids andattachPreviewTaskIdsreceives[id, id, …].

src/services/task_service.py:957-969(completion check)frontend/components/knowledge-dropdown.tsx:523-536frontend/app/api/queries/useGetTasksQuery.ts:112-125
Potential Solution
- De-duplicate
taskIdsByBatchbeforeattachPreviewTaskIds. - Hold the task open until the client finishes the last batch, for example with an explicit "finalize" call, or count expected files up front (
total_filesfrom the first request).

(3c) [Minor] The new router and task-join paths have no backend tests
Problem
- No test covers these new paths:
_rejected_uploads(JSON parsing and validation)_rejection_only_response(the 202 withfile_count: 0)- the
existing_task_idpass-through in both ingest helpers - the join branch of
create_custom_task - the
rejected_filesform field end to end
tests/unit/test_router_upload_limit.pywas not touched. Onlyrecord_rejected_uploadsis tested, intest_task_service_get_task_status2.py._form_strexists only because tests callupload_ingest_routerdirectly and leave FastAPI'sForm(...)default in place. That is a test accommodation in production code.- The backend has no diff-coverage gate, so CI stays green. 3a is the kind of defect these tests would catch.

Potential Solution
- Add router tests for: rejections only (202, no files), files plus rejections (rejections attached to the new task),
existing_task_idforwarded, and malformedrejected_filesignored. - Add a
create_custom_taskjoin test (appends files, keeps counts consistent, refuses a cancelled task). - Replace

@Wallgau the Operator changes need to be in Operator repo. |

@edwinjosechittilappilly the 1 MB failure on Cloud Pak was the nginx in front of Docling (port 5001, forwarding to Docling on 5002). That server block had no client_max_body_size, so nginx kept its default of 1 MB and returned 413 before the file reached Docling. Rodrigo fixed that proxy. The Langflow nginx (openrag-lf-nginx-config on port 7860) was already set to client_max_body_size 100M and is not the hop that rejected the file. Pull request #2470 does not change that proxy. It tells the user what happened: a file over OpenRAG’s own limit is refused up front with the limit named, and a file that Docling’s proxy still rejects gets a separate message saying the file is within OpenRAG’s limit and an administrator has to raise the proxy. We talked this through with product and set the OpenRAG limit at 100 MB. We will revisit it if customers complain. No operator-repo change is required for that. The backend already uses 100 MB when OPENRAG_MAX_UPLOAD_MB is unset, and a different limit can be set on the OpenRAG custom resource. |

issue: https://github.ibm.com/lakehouse/tracker/issues/92818
Summary
docling-serverejects the multipart body (client_max_body_sizedefaults to1m). The browser upload itself returns 202, and the task then fails in the background. Raisingnginx.ingress.kubernetes.io/proxy-body-sizeon the OpenRAG route does not change that proxy.OPENRAG_MAX_UPLOAD_MB(default 100 mebibytes) while the upload is being read and returns 413 with the file name, size, and configured limit. A file at exactly the limit is accepted. This does not raise the Docling proxy body limit; set the variable to that proxy's real limit, or raiseclient_max_body_sizeon the Docling proxy./upload_options. A failed lookup, or a missing or invalidmax_upload_mb, falls back to 100 MB and the server still enforces the limit. Folder uploads are split by file count and total bytes. Oversized files are skipped with a limit message, and an HTML 413 is shown as plain text.Test plan
